Week 3 gain weight and inches!

(Aj Schick) #1

This will prob be my last post here as I dont know what to do. I’m frustrated. Weight myself today back up 2.2 pound which puts me back at my starting weight. I also measured and I gained 1/2 inch everywhere on my body. If someone wants to judge what I am I am eating i can post my food log, i am eating 1100 calories and have never gone over 25 carbs in these three weeks. I don’t see a point of continuing this diet if I don’t see little changes to keep me going. I don’t know what else to change or do so that I can see alittle bit of hope that I’m losing weight

(Renee) #2

Are you close to your monthly cycle…water retention and bloatedness can happen…I went about a week where I didn’t lose any weight and felt bloated but it did go away and I’m losing again…I’ve only been on keto for about three weeks now myself…the bloating and non weight loss happened in the second week…try not to give up.

(Stephanie Sablich) #3

1100 calories is really really low. Perhaps your body is holding on to the weight because you’re not yet fat adapted and you’re not eating enough. It thinks you’re starving, and may be shutting down.

(Aj Schick) #4

I’m on birth control, so I don’t have a monthly cycle

(TJ Borden) #5

THIS… as counter intuitive as it seems, you might need to eat more in order to start loosing. Once you’re fat adapted you’ll start to loose and you’ll naturally take in less calories, but until then, EAT, and EAT FAT

(Clara Teixeira) #6

What others said. Calories too low! Look up your TDEE and try to reach that. I gain when I restrict calories.

(Clara Teixeira) #7

Also remember it takes up to 6 weeks to become fat adapted. Set a goal for 3 months and give it a chance to work.

Keto is not a weight loss and calorie restricting diet. It’s a way of eating that promotes gaining health with the side effect of reaching a healthy weight. Your body does not give two flying anything about what you see on the scale or in a tape measure.

Let me ask you, if you weren’t keto, how would you respond to a number on the scale? Would you try to lower it? How? Excessive exercise and calorie restricting? What if it went down after that, you’d feel better? And the next week if it went up when you didn’t maintain your excessive regimen? Do you just push more? How long do you do this before you can’t anymore and regain everything and then some?

Part of getting over this idea that “I didn’t lose x weight in three weeks, this isn’t working, if it doesn’t start working I quit!” is getting over it in your mind. This isn’t a quick weight loss yo yo diet.

When you go keto, you are committing to repairing your insides. Whatever form that takes it what it takes. If your measurement devices are causing you to derail from the process, they and the stock you put into them are the problem, not the fact that you are actively going into ketosis. We have a couple sayings around here, “keep calm, keto on” and “trust the process.”

The basic “rules” I go by and many others can agree with especially for beginners are

*20g net carbs max (you might tolerate more or less but, starting out, 20g net carbs or less will get you into ketosis.)

*Moderate protein (1g-1.5g per kg of lean bodyweight is a good goal based on the 2 Dudes recommendations.)

*Fat to satiety (add fat to every meal and, if you are hungry, eat more fat.)

*Do not count or restrict calories

*Drink plenty of water

*Get plenty of salt and other electrolytes

*It can take an average of 6-8 weeks of strict keto for many to get to the golden phase of ketosis which is fat adaptation

As far as your monthly cycle, not having a period does not mean you won’t gain water weight as your hormones go through normal fluctuations.

A widespread gain in inches with a weight increase may most likely be water retention. I had a similar experience a few months back when only a month or so in, but I put on 11 lbs in two days and it took a couple of days to rid myself of the extra water weight, but I needed to up my salt intake to do it. Perhaps you may need to evaluate your electrolyte intake. But DO stick with it and your body will find its new norm (though it may be an up and down experience). Don’t let the scale freak you out, it’s a lying liar that lies. In the long run things will work out, hang in there. IT’S WORTH IT!!!

(Karl) #10

I agree. The fact that you’re treating it as a “diet” might be a problem as well. If you haven’t noticed, people are trying to solve health problems affecting their very mortality in a world where modern medicine is failing them. A lot of us are doing this to literally save our lives and limbs - not lose a few pounds.

I’m thinking this might not be the lifestyle change for you. Sorry if that’s blunt or too forward, or if I’m making a poor assumption.

#11

2.2lbs? I literally DRANK more than that in physical weight with dinner! Why are you worried about such an insignificant amount? Absolutely post a food log, why would you rather quit than figure out the problem and correct it? Your profile says you started keto THIS month, so in less time than it even takes to get into a decent level of ketosis and become fat adapted your already thinking of quitting? If you give up that easily than nothing you ever try is going to work, because that’s simply not trying. There is NO shortage of people here like me that have been eating this weigh for YEARS and have collectively been through anything you can conceive, post your food logs and we’ll go from there. We may ask you more, and you answer more and we will find the problem but we can’t help you if your not willing to help yourself. Stay the course and you WILL get your results!

(Aj Schick) #12

Not trying to start anything but because I’m in need of losing weight, that is not a valid reason for doing this? I realize that this is a lifestyle change but I use “diet” interchangeably (my bad, I’ll make sure I use better wording in my future post). All I used to eat was so carb dense it wasn’t funny. So when you take away my comfort food and the main component that i ate, I though I could at least expect some sort of progress. I’m not talking about 20lbs in 2 weeks. I’m saying 1lb in 2 weeks or a 1/2 inch off my waist or clearer skin. Believe me I know that people are tired of my posts and pity parties but I have no support in my life right now, you guys are it.

This was the shitty day, hospital was very busy

(Aj Schick) #14

Better day and the ice cream was a Keto recipe

(Karl) #16

Well, like I said, I apologize if I made any poor assumptions (I have that defective “Y” chromosome that makes me prone to those).

As for what the valid reasons are for doing Keto, it’s not for me to decide what reasons are valid for your doing it. It’s your time and your body. At the end of the day, I’m just another idiot on the internet with an opinion. Like most idiots, I express these opinions often without knowing all the facts. My knee-jerk reaction to your posts is that you’re impatient to the point of giving up after only doing this a very short time.

Compare that to others in here who are still Givin’ Blood & Keepin’ Faith for 2 years or more (and STILL having 50lb or more to lose), your situation is kind of the exception to what you usually see here.

Hey, I hope you nail this. I hope everyone who eats this way does…But the sad reality is not everyone succeeds.

(Jay AM) #17

Let’s slow down for a second here. You’re recommending a big fasting change to someone who may be undereating, is only three weeks keto, and isn’t fat adapted yet. There are other issues to work on before fasting. Adding that, I definitely agree fasting is a great tool once you’ve nailed down the other pieces.

#18

Hey, so three weeks isn’t a lot but I know it can feel like foreveerrrrr if you’ve relied on carbs previously. Could you give us your target macros and how much you are hitting? % or Grams of Fat, Protien and Carb?

#19

Just looking at your amounts left it looks like you really need to up your fat intake and protien. Like people have said, it sounds counter productive but it’s true. They could better assess if you do have your macros though.

(Bea ) #20

No. With High FASTING INSULIN there s no other way or other pieces!! If u r producing Insulin without eating anything believe me fasting s the only way to bring it down! And window eating s a start like I said b4 full day fast. Maybe u better read next time what I say.

This is why we say trust the process. Your body is a unique snow flake and it’s going to work on the inside before it shows on the outside. Take pictures today, put all the measuring junk away, and take pictures in 4 weeks. Then 8 weeks. If you can’t see the difference, show us and we’ll point them out.

I think you may suffer from the same thing I do in regards to not measuring yourself and trying to see changes in an arbitrary number. “What if it’s not working? What if I step on the scale in 6 weeks and weigh 30 more lbs!?” It’s scary to consider that you literally only have control over what you put in your mouth and have to let your body sort it out from there.

But, that’s exactly what it comes down to. Input the right foods and let your body work on it. If you notice an obviously negative effect, provide the right input to fix it. Like, hungry? Input more fat. Thirsty? Water! Headache or other flu symptoms? Electrolytes. Try it. I promise that in a month you won’t turn into a manatee.
