Wedding week planned cheat

Hello, all. I’m pretty new here.

I started keto in late March of this year at 222.6 lbs. By about a month ago, I had reached just under 190 for a day (189.4). My son got married out of town last week and I went up with my wife (who’s lost 36 lbs. on keto) for the week. The day before I left, I weighed 190.4.

For the week, I ate what I felt like. Pizza, pasta, beer, the whole shmear. Coming back, our plane landed around 2:00 and once we hit the ground I went back on strict keto (20 grams a day or less). The next morning, after a fasted 50 minute swim (I always weigh right after my morning swim) I weighed 193.2. The following day (yesterday), I weighed 190.4 again and this morning, I weighed 189.0.

So it seems like taking a planned cheat is not the end of the world. I had zero problem going back on the diet.

It’s not.

I find the trouble is that first I remember how much I liked certain foods. Once that happens my monkey mind brings them up as a suggestion, to use these foods as joy/entertainment boosters, when I’m feeling low. The associations that I’ve managed to break between eating and comfort are really easy to re-establish!

I do cheat on rare occasions, and it doesn’t have any physical impact that I can see, but it is definitely recreates an emotional struggle.

Curiously, I didn’t have anything with sugar in it during the week off. I gave up sugar over a decade ago, so that was not a big problem. I didn’t even have a bite of the wedding cake.

I enjoyed the pizza and Mexican, beer and sandwiches, but I didn’t go crazy.

Curiously enough, I weighed in at 188.4 this morning. Seems like the cheat might have broken my stall I was in before the week.

It really depends on how you are. I also don’t have much of a problem going off plan, but I realize all the bad things that happen when I do – I feel bad; I’m hungry all the time; I get sleepy in the afternoon; allergies, asthma, etc.

But some people go down this road and don’t return. It just depends on how you are.

If it were me, I’d live on beer, pizza, and ice cream. In the last 10+ years, I’ve had very few beers; do have pizza a handful of times per year; have ice cream for birthdays and holidays. But – so far – maybe I should knock on wood? – I’ve been able to have these and go back to keto.
