Vintage Ladies Keto Klub

I have a bit of trouble with keto treats too. I also have to be all or nothing. Planning my snacks for Super Bowl I don,'t have a dog in the fight as the Broncos cratered. Would cheer for any team over Patriots though, and Eagles have not had much to cheer about for years.

Salt and vinegar chiccharones
Green veggies in high fat sour cream dip
1/2 nuts like cashews, but pecans will be best
Cheese of course

Pork rinds saved my life! LOL! No, they’re not Doritos, but they don’t make me sick like Doritos once did. And I can stop before I eat the whole bag, usually. LOL!

(Tracy) #303

OMG! I’m a Broncos fan too! :+1::grin: And, I’m rooting for the Eagles as well. No great love for the Patriots either. As for Super Bowl snacks, I can’t really afford to go too crazy with that this year. Might just go with tried and true pork rinds, guacamole, and sofa water.

Tracy, I relate to your story. I avoid sweets of all kinds these days too, as even keto sweeteners cause my glucose to rise. Nuts cause a small glucose rise, but don’t kick me out of ketosis. They do cause me to gain weight, however because if I indulge, I over-indulge. I have been keto since January 2017. Down 35 lbs. I need to lose another 35 lbs., but my weight doesn’t want to budge. At least I’m not gaining, like I have done in the past. FYI, this is the first year I did NOT gain any holiday weight. I did make a Thanksgiving and Christmas feast dinner for our large extended family. I made sure I had plenty of delicious meat, cheese, veggies, etc. that were acceptable for me, and then I made a mouth-watering keto carrot cheese cake which I ate plenty of, since I don’t indulge in desserts much otherwise. These holiday indulgences were satisfying to me, and they didn’t cause me to gain any weight. I considered this holiday season a win for me.
From one fellow food junkie to another, keep calm and keto on! To all of our best health in 2018.

(Tracy) #305

I decided over Christmas this year to eat what I wanted, as long as it was keto, or at least not entirely anti-keto. I (over) indulged in nuts, I made a batch of keto cookies that only I ate, and had some pretty big helpings of keto cheesecake. My brother even made a rice stuffing for me. Now I know that’s not keto, and I didn’t have much, but I wouldn’t have touched the bread stuffing with a barge pole, so it was kinda nice. I didn’t gain much, and really the worst of the gain came afterwards when I was trying to get back on track. That was a bit harder than I had bargained for.

I’m so glad that you were able to get through without any weight gain at all!! That’s a feat! I got through Halloween this year without once, for the first time in my life, succumbing to those stupid little chocolate bars that aren’t even really that good. That was my big success of 2017.

So, I’ve been doing strictly ZC since Sunday and I have noticed a few things. First, I’ve noticed that my ketones seem to be even lower than normal, in the 0.2, 0.3 range, which has been a surprise. My resting heart rate has dropped a bit too, which could be both good and bad as I have thyroid problems, and I am experiencing a little bit of inflammation, e.g. some body pain. I’m surprised by the ketones, but maybe I’m not getting enough fat? Veggies were always a really good vehicle for my fats. And I’m wondering if now I’m eating too much protein in order to feel satiated. I feel like giving in already, but I haven’t even given it a week! LOL! Do you have any advice?

(Arlene) #306

I’m not sure what’s going on with your ketones, but I keep my protein fairly low and eat enough fat to feel satisfied for at least five or six hours. Everyone has to figure out what works for them. Do your own experiment and reduce the protein a little, while raising the fat at the same time. See what happens.

(Karen) #307

@farmgirl
What’s low protein for you??
I would like to be at 65 or less grams, but struggle to keep it down

K

(Arlene) #308

I don’t have any exact numbers, just keep it as low as possible; usually below 60 grams. Eating one meal a day makes this easy. Sometimes I eat two meals, but never three because I’m just not hungry.

(Tracy) #309

I find it really hard to keep the fat high when eating only meat, and then I tend to overdo the meat. Ugh!

So happy to have found this nook on the forum! I’m a keto newbie, 60, studying everything I can as quickly as I can… Learning to be patient while my body takes its time getting fat adapted, lol  I’m using cronometer.com to help me keep track of my macros; it’s giving me a great deal of daily insight, and I’m realising there’s so much more to all of this than the CICO I’ve been working with all my life! Glad to be here, ladies…

(Melissa Marie) #311

Congratulations on your success and abstaining. And thank you for the well wishes!

Sugar has not been my problem as much as Carbs in general I guess. I crave bread, burgers, fries, pasta, biscuits and gravy… :disappointed: I have a girlfriend who loved sugary stuff like milkshakes, cake, pie etc. But for me it was a meal with carbs that did it. White flour! That was my cake. I’ve been using Erythritol and Stevia to sweeten my coffee in the morning with Premier protein as my creamer. I would be sad without my coffee. It is actually quite palatable compared to plain stevia and heavy cream. In the beginning I really wanted something sweet but that has mostly subsided. I bought an 85% bar of chocolate and have some peanut butter and used that as a back up. But it is still wrapped up in the cabinet untouched. So yes we are definitely snowflakes.

I bought some pork rinds and made keto crab dip the other day. The dip was awesome but real crackers definitely would have been better. Either way I was full and ate a small dinner later and those two together were too much. I am still having trouble at times digesting the fat. My gallbladder wasn’t happy prior to Keto so it is apparently still trying to figure out how to deal with this new WOE.

My happy times as a kid growing up were centered around food and extended into my family and way of life. So that was my happy place and where I always went back to for comfort. I grew to love to cook and eat and especially go out to eat. (all the benefits and none of the work :joy:) I am almost down 10lbs so that is quite motivating to me. I do need a distraction though and that is part of the problem when my life was centered around food before. The goals of doing things eventually don’t keep me quite distracted enough and I revert back to thinking about food still. I definitely need a hobby! :woman_artist::dancer::airplane:

I definitely agree with your statement of “If I can’t keep it off then I’m not interested in losing it in the first place. I have lost and gained too many times to do that to myself again.” I feel the same. I don’t have any outlandish goals. I am ok with being over my “preferred” weight. My health insurance company hosts a lifestyle management site to help people loose weight/live healthier and the end goal they set is 133. That is hilarious to me actually. (not to mention the main goal is eating less fat and never cutting processed foods) I looked unhealthy at 145 10 years ago when I did keto for a while/working out. I definitely want to be more fit and able to feel comfortable in my own skin and that is the goal for me. Not numbers. But comfortable and healthier!

Thanks for the support!

(Tracy) #312

Thanks Melissa. I almost gave into my cravings last night, but “cheated” with a bowl of well-oiled coleslaw mix instead. I haven’t been eating any carbs this week, but I was unhappy about that last night for some reason.

Yes, pork rinds are a poor substitute, though they are a life saver for me. My sister tried these keto crackers and she loved them, so maybe they might be something you’d want to try.

OMG! I’m rolling on the floor at the mention 133 pounds! I can’t be sure, but I think the last time my scales were anywhere near that I was 12! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Comfortable and healthier are goals I share too. Thanks to you and everyone on here who is lending support. I’ve been at this pretty much alone until just recently, and I’m finding this a great place to share and learn.

So, KCKO everyone. And happy Friday. :+1::grin:

I’ve actually been keeping my carbs very low (below 20 for sure) just because I am not wanting the carbs I am allowed to have. If I do eat any it is with dinner. Made hibatchi steak, shrimp and veggies with a keto yum yum sauce. Took me days to finish the vegetables and Monday I prepped chicken with cheese and keto cauliflower mashed potatoes and that hasn’t even really interested me. Still have two out of 3 meals left. I might have to make some coleslaw, It doesn’t sound half bad. I was wanting a big chef salad when I got home from a long drive yesterday so that is what I had. Only ate half. But after not really eating vegetables I think maybe that was why I wanted it??? And now I am back to not wanting them again.

Yeah that 133 is crazy. I was in high school when I last weighed that but graduated at 145 and wasn’t fat. I am not structurally built to weigh 133.

I just ordered some Sukrin bread mixes and their ketchup which I am excited about!! A piece of keto bread and butter sounds AHHHHHMAZING right now. lol I will check out the crackers for sure! Thanks Tracy. :+1:

Hi ladies. Chiming in. Plateaued a bit. 166 lbs and stuck. Eating keto, but a high 1500 calories for me. Makes me wonder again about fewer calories. Haven’t been getting enough greens either. Just read an article about increasing your HDL. Exercise of course. I don’t get to it. But purple cabbage, olive oil, coconut oil I can do. I need to make more room for fatty fish too.

K

(Joan) #315

wow, 1500 calories. I just can’t seem to get there. I’m still in the 2200 at least, geez my coffee alone it almost 400 calories, I’ve changed the recipe and trimmed it several times and I’d really hate to give that up too.
I’m feeling sad this morning cuz I had a big carb day yesterday. We went out of town for an overnight and I did not plan well. I did not plan well at all. Now I have a carb hangover…

(Arlene) #316

Tracy, I don’t add fat. I just make sure to cook fatty cuts of meat. Last night I ate chicken wings. Talk about almost no meat and lots of fat!

(Melissa Marie) #317

My recommended calories were 1466 at a 20% deficit weighing 215. I’m sedentary… I used ruled.me… adjusted to my new weight it recommends 1429.

(Nola) #318

I had what I’m going to call a NSV today… I was walking the track at my gym and as I was finishing up, this younger (fit) man remarked how nice the view was as he was coming up behind me. My feminist instinct was “how dare you say such a sexist thing to me!”, but my vanity prevailed and I said “Thank you”… The kicker was that he invited me into the weight room with him and we could spot each other? and maybe go for coffee afterward?.. Oh my! I can’t even press as much weight as I’ve lost, let alone spot anyone else.
I couldn’t bear to tell this lovely man I am old enough to be his mother, but it sure was flattering to be paid attention to in a positive way!

Guess I will have to join this club since I am and old lady, in age only. I am doing this way of eating to basically lose weight and to cut down on inflammation. I have over 200 pounds to lose and I have already lost over 100 just switching to a low carb diet with moderate fat and protein. However, I reached a plateau, even though I was eating the same amount as before. I have been a patient of Dr. Mercola in the past so I tried his keto version with special emphasis on healing the mitochondria. His version of keto is very, very low carb with 80% fat. Though I found this difficult I stuck it out for 6 weeks but never lost an ounce. I track every single thing I eat and scientifically I should have lost at least six pounds as I have a weekly deficit of over 7000 calories. I am wondering how long I can do this. My glucose level is low and all my lipids are perfect and I have had virtually no sugar for 2 years. I am a chef so I cook almost all my meals. Just does not make any sense to me. Also this way of eating is very expensive, especially the Mercola way. Any advice?

(Karen) #320

I ran out of eggs today. I use lots. The are cheap, digestible and fairly
Balanced keto wise. 5 g fat, 6g protein, 0.6 g carb. Butter is not super expensive. Ideally grass fed organic etc is best, but but you can still eat keto on a budget.:blush:
