Very disappointed ... have to get of this train (electrolytes and stuff)

Hi

I just consumed 25g of carbs in blue berries. It’s week 7 and I just feel like shit. Yesterday I had 7000mg of sodium to address electrolytes and felt fantastic. Today I am back to feeling rubish, tingling hands light headed cant focus. Last night heart was pounding.

Then keto ppl say either to much potassium not enough. who knows.

Yes I have been tracking macros, have been supplementing electrolytes. It should not be that hard.

Will try to find doctor who has idea about this and revaluate.

I just want to feel somewhat normal.

I’m not going to lie… I feel like that sometimes, too. I’m tired, light headed and dizzy everytime I fast for more than 24 hours. Simetimes I feel like people just lie about how great they feel. And its always the same answer… “more salt, potassium and magnesium.” Like we haven’t already tried that.

On the other side of the coin, I have finally lost weight… lots of weight. I’m no longer winded when I climb the stairs at work and I eat soooo much less than I used to.

I think some people, like you and me, have a longer adjustment period. Or maybe our bodies just work a little differently than most. Either way, I think it would be bad to quit so soon. Maybe give is another month and see what happens. You might be right at the edge of success, you know?

I had 150g of blue berries - so 25g of sugar. I will not go eat full on carbs. Right now am trying to find some doctor that knows this stuff in this side of world. Seems to be bit hard.

I can manage my wight on 100g of carbs just fine, but this was way easier in terms of hunger.

#4

Have you felt that way the whole time or is it an occasional thing? How much potassium do you take? It took me a while to find the right balance of electrolytes for my body too.

(Maigais) #5

about 2500mg potassium at end of last week more as I had avocado per day + 4g lite salt.

feeling tired 75% time and just cant maintain this as need to work

#6

That sounds about right. I go a little lighter on potassium to avoid heart palpitations. Not sure about the weakness/lethargy. I hope you can figure it out with the help of your doctor!

(Maigais) #7

Here is one day in my food log

Sodium was on low side. I have upped it.

I will see doc Thursday will not drop out of keto till then.

#8

It looks like you’re eating the right kinds of things. Do you think you might not be fat adapted yet?

(Maigais) #9

I am ok to not be fat adapted and be tired, I am not ok with being light headed and feeling generally unwell - read can’t sleep cos heart is jumping.

#10

The only time I had both of those symptoms was when I was still figuring out my electrolytes and went too high (for me) on potassium. Also gave me heartburn. Now I supplement with about 700-1000 mg per day of potassium. A 1400 mg dose was what caused problems for me.

I have fatigue/dizziness issues when standing up…perhaps your blood pressure is low. It might be worth investigating as with keto many experience less inflammation and lowered insulin - that alone can jack your blood pressure down and give you the problems you are experiencing, especially if you are on BP meds. Just a thought. Best to you!

Good luck finding a doctor who agrees with keto let alone one that knows enough to give you the answer you seek. What I would use the doc for is looking for other causes for your symptoms.

The potassium is tricky since it is fat soluble so unlike the other electrolytes you CAN have too much and store it to excess levels while Na and Mg are both peed out when consumed in excess.

Otherwise I would set up some experiments in changing some basics. It sounds like you are in weight maintenance mode so maybe you just need more carbs. There is no shame in that, in fact I would be proud if I could take more carbs while staying keto.

That happened to me for about 2 weeks near the 6 week mark, I am pretty sure it was my body getting used to start burning fat and needing more salt. I upped my salt intake, I think my blood pressure was bottoming out, it was taken a couple days later on a blood draw and it was the lowest i had ever had.

#14

Good point. The 2ketodudes’ podcast The Salt Fix was very informative in that regard.

(Chris W) #15

I wished I had heard it then I was a little freaked out…

(Maigais) #16

Thank you everyone, I do sound very winging today. Just todays low after yesterdays high is that so hard.

Sound like I should just stick with this for bit more, might be that I am bottoming out.

So plan is to
0) listen to podcast

  1. Keep Sodium at 5000mg
  2. I will stop lite salt as it looks like I have enough potassium from food
  3. Keep magnesium at 500mg
  4. Measure ketones at evening as yesterday it was 2.4 need to see what did 25g of sugar from blueberies did.
  5. I have found local low carb doc, will go talk, see what he says. I do not hold my hopes to high.

Report back at what is happening.

#17

Don’t feel bad. You are a trooper for sticking with it!

(Chris W) #18

Good luck, and it could be the onset of a cold as well, despite feelng good most of the time we still get sick. Week 3 I came down with the real flu, it was horrid.

(Maigais) #19

Just in case some peeks in this thread with similar issue.

  1. I had about 25 -30g in sugar at 12:00 from blue beries
  2. at 4:30 went to kickboxing
  3. After gym my keton levels show 1.4 in blood streem

I am feeling ok at the moment will see what night will bring.

(Robert Hollinger) #20

are you on any blood pressure meds? I didn’t know that I’m not supposed to take potassium supplements on one of mine because it already raises potassium. unfortunately after 2 months my bp hasn’t normalized so I can’t approach my doctor about removing them :frowning:
