Urinary retention? UTI? Newbie is freaking out here!

(Keto Sweetie) #1

Hi! I’m on Keto diet since July 23, so I just finished my fourth week. I’m doing great and I felt great since day 1… until yesterday morning, when I noticed that after waking up I couldn’t urinate as usual. Just a few drops and then it stopped. Not normal for me.
During the day I didn’t pay much attention to this, but I think I went to the bathroom just once or twice and with the same amount of urine

Today is worst because I’m very much aware of the problem and I started to freaking out a little. First I thought it could be a kidney stones related issue… but I got no pain at all or other symptoms.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Could it be UTI? Or it’s likely urinary retention? I never hear people on keto talk about similar problems. It’s just me?

Help please! Thank you :sob:

p.s. also… sorry for the bad English. It’s not my first language

Dehydration can cause this. Drink more water and see if it helps.

Thank you! I do drink a lot of water usually, but maybe I didn’t get enough in the last few days and I didn’t notice
I hope it’s just that

“freaking out a little” Don’t freak out, stay cool. It’s Just your body adapting to changes in your diet I guess.
More science from the more experienced members will be on it’s way, many different time zones here.
Mean while don’t stress out. You will pee soon enough by the gallon. And that’s a fact. Stay cool.
PS, by the way you English, is prefect.

Thank you so much!
I’m already a little more relaxed about this. I don’t usually freak out for this kind of stuff, but this concerned me a lot and I don’t know why

Is the problem that your bladder feels as though it’s bursting, but you cannot urinate, or that you think you should want to urinate but aren’t producing much urine? If the former, get to your doctor right away!

If the latter, you might find it helpful to get a bit more salt in your diet, and to be sure to drink to thirst. If you notice that your urine is very dark, this is often a sign of dehydration.

Also, keto is very diuretic. You need to drink a fair bit more water than you did previously. So, I’m guessing you are dehydrated. Up your sodium to about 5 grams a day, (that’s a little over two teaspoons of salt) and drink more fluids.
