UGH, this ended badly... vomiting involved

#1

This was not my first extended fast. I have already done several 3-day fasts and one 8-day EF.

This time I fasted for about 72 hours, and due to zero previous issues with breaking fasts, I went ahead and packed myself a large keto lunch to break the fast at work. The lunch consisted of a salad with homemade caesar dressing, eggs, and avocado, as well as lamb meatballs in a heavy cream and cheese sauce. Even typing this I realize that this was likely overwhelming for my fasted stomach, but that is of course hindsight.

So I ate everything I packed, and I felt STUFFED, and very uncomfortably so. I figured the feeling would pass, but it only got worse and worse. I ate around 2, left work around 4 and went for a walk at the mall just to walk off the bloated feeling. Got home around 6 and felt even worse, like there is an elephant sitting in my stomach and pressing on my diaphragm. Stupidly I went ahead and had a glass of red wine, which made me sleepy. I closed my eyes for about 20 minutes on the couch, and then woke up with intense nausea and the need to vomit. I RAN over to the bathroom, and out came the remnants of my lunch bathed in pinot noir. It is now almost 9 pm, and I am starting to feel better, although I still have an inflated balloon for a stomach, which I am gingerly stroking and warming with a heat pack.

My question to you is, why did this happen? Why did it not happen all the other times I broke my fasts with food and wine? Something about the food contents? Do I have a fatal illness and will die now, lol?

Help, I am freaking out that something horrible happened or that I have now developed an eating disorder and will vomit up all my meals from now on? :scream::tired_face:

Don’t discount the possibility of food poisoning. Also, sometimes a bunch of fat just doesn’t go down well.

From my personal experience, 72 hours is no big deal, and I break even longer fasts with my usual single large meal for the day now. I used to have something small like a handful of nuts a short while before the first meal but I stopped doing that and haven’t noticed any difference in how well my digestion works. This may be a personal thing however, as I’m used to having large meals with a relatively long time between them.

Having a stomachache is not the same as an eating disorder, obviously. You have nothing to worry about there unless you feel like you’re deliberately sabotaging yourself.

Thanks Berengal,
I doubt it was food poisoning because everyone in my family had the same leftovers for lunch with no issues. Regarding the vomiting, it was not deliberate at all. I wanted the food to stay in, and I wanted to feast in order to refeed my body and raise my metabolism. I was just too uncomfortable and nauseous, and the only way to find relief was to purge :disappointed_relieved:

It could be that it was food poisoning or food was just sitting so long not moving that your brain wanted it gone. I have never thrown up, but have had explosive diarrhea from eating the wrong things after a fast. Lol…

It takes time to get your digestive track moving again. A safe bet is to eat something small like olives or some nuts 30 minutes before your first meal. And I wouldn’t make that first meal a large one.

Boo so sorry! Just weighing in to say this has happened to me. I have no idea how my refeeds will go each time so I try to break them gently with a break just in case - I’ve had vomit, diarrhea, and also had no issues-seems to be random chance?

Jennifer, yes, I believe I have learned my lesson for sure. I have no diarrhea… YET. We shall see what tomorrow morning brings, lol.

The worst part is, I actually gained (gasp) weight on this 3-day fast! Talk about adding insult to injury. I am getting closer to my target weight with only 5-10 lbs and one size pants down to go. I am getting impatient, but just like everyone says, the last 10 lbs are the hardest. I have a bunch of skirts and pants that are too big, but I refuse to invest in an in-between size wardrobe. I just keep wearing stretchy stuff to the office, lol.

Well, tonight I have zero desire to eat ever again. I am hoping that changes at some point otherwise I will be forever fasting and gaining at the same time

Becky, that’s really good to know! Not good that it happened to you obviously, but I am glad I am not alone and it can happen. I will be super careful next time.

I highly reccomend breaking fasts with this shake recipe

1-2 scoops chocalate or vanilla iso pure
1/4 cup - 2/3 cup heavy cream
steavia for extra sweetness
mct oil

PERFECT

Thanks Cristian, but I do not use sweeteners, so unfortunately no shake for me. How about an egg or an avocado?

When you make caesar dressing, do you use raw egg? And/or homemade mayo? How long had it been since the dressing was made? This was the only real red flag I saw in what you ate. If the dressing wasn’t really fresh, it might have been the culprit. The last time I had food poisoning it was from a ceasar dressing at a restaurant. NOT FUN.

Candy,
I think you are onto something there. My husband made the dressing and pasteurized the eggs himself at home, but the dressing was not that fresh, maybe a week old. I was actually eating it and thinking it did not taste right. I even tossed it when I got home. That certainly could have been a contributing factor.

Thank you! What flavor of iso pure do you like? And do you order online? Do you think it would work with almond milk or something as I’m trying dairy free this month?

I have never had a problem at 72 hours but have had a problem with 5 days. I ate a perfectly nice chicken salad at a restaurant with 7 other people who were ok. Everything started coming out the other side before I even left the restaurant. Now on the morning of the last day I have some psyllium with water and again an hour before I plan to start eating.

Two nights ago I ate a little more than usual for dinner after fasting for about 24 hours (ate a little but do not remember what, it was an unintentional fast). I was so uncomfortable

Its funny im drinking a fat bomb shake rn!

1 cup almond should do but i reccomend highly you use silks unsweetend coconut milk (0 carbs and fattier than almond)
CHOCALATE ISOPURE DA BOMB
,yes order it on amazon

and make sure too sprinkle in some salt in the shake, it really makes a differance making it amplify the creamyness

For someone who just had a horrid experience breaking a fast with very fatty food, I’d tread cautiously with this recipe. Instead, perhaps try what the experts suggest, which is a small amount of olives, etc. Not sure a fatty shake will yield better results for you.

My $.02.

I make my own broth and when I want to end a fast, there is broth or soup waiting. I have vegetable soup made from broth (uh, it is 2 weeks old) ready to break my fast. I might need to find out how long one can keep cauliflower soup in the fridge. I can’t eat a large meal when breaking a fast.

My body is amazing. I have finished 8 days and going onto Day 9. I am trying to resolve a swollen tongue issue and I am reluctant to break my fast early. My gums started throbbing about an hour ago.

I had better get something in to break my fast.

Please excuse me.
