The Science Behind Dairy Preventing Weight Loss

#13

Dr Westin Child’s is a functional MD as well and I find his articles very good info. Here’s one for you to look at… Thyroid etc…

#14

The typical reason I see is because of auto immune concerns rather than any anti ketogenic properties, except for milk and whey.

Maybe @Donna has more information.

I find dairy products to be bloating and mess with my BM’s , also I find it makes me all around sluggish .

(Meeping up the Science!) #16

I never saw it for weight loss. It’s for autoimmune reasons or lactose intolerance. Regarding autoimmunity, it is thought to contribute to the worsening of the AI response via the gut permeability issues the same way gluten does.

As for weight loss, unless you have autoimmune issues or lactose intolerance, dairy away?

Or is that awhey >.>

So although there are people with the obvious lactose and/or casein intolerances/allergies/sensitivities and the possibility that there’s something insuligenic, if someone doesn’t have any of the previous issues, another likely cause is how it is affecting gut permeability (aka leaky gut).

It’s not scientific, but Maria Emmerich is a low-carb nutritional consultant that claims many clients who can’t seem to lose weight on LCHF/keto, get past it when eliminating any dairy, including ghee. I think that IF would probably work for those people too, but she doesn’t address that one way or the other.

It seems like the deck is stacked against dairy for many people and I’m one where I have to limit it. I don’t seem to have the lactose/casein issues, but I definitely seem to have leaky gut issues from it.

I agree! I really like Dr. Childs and stumbled upon him out of desperation. So many people on the boards were having success and I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t lose no matter what changes I made. Listening to him is what prompted me to seek out professional help. I’m so glad I did because I do have elevated fasting leptin and insulin levels as well as borderline hypothyroidism, which I am now on a natural desiccated thyroid medication. We are still trying to tweak the dosage. I also had a thyroid ultrasound due to an enlarged thyroid (very common) and apparently I have nodules that she would like to test again in a year to see if they grow. They are too small to biopsy at this time. Needless to say, I think there are many in my situation that are not finding success but it is not due to non-compliance.

I think many more people have permeable gut issues causing autoimmune bloat. I limit it and immediately have improvement, but I also have several of the autoimmune conditions that benefit from elimination. I still have a smidge in moderation when I can.

Just a guess but from what I’ve read your Thursday to Monday fast could be the culprit ,fasting gives off a stress response which raises cortisol levels ,if you still want to fast you could try every other day or 16/8,and just like weight lifting your body is smart and adjusts to your changes so you might need to mix things up every so often, keep us updated on your progress

Show me the science?

#22

Oh dear. I think I’m in the same boat! Dairy has carried me through these past couple months but I suspect all the cheese and cream (is butter considered dairy?) is the reason I’m stuck after 16 pounds. It is my crunch in cheese crisps, my ooey-gooey deliciousness on eggs and zoodles, my taco shells and pepperoni pizza base!
Following with interest and curious if it really is something that blocks the loss.

#23

How are you limiting your dairy? What do you allow and how much a day?

(momzbusy2012) #24

I don’t believe this is so because I didn’t start the extended fasting until a month ago and it is actually the only thing I’ve done to move the scale. If anything, it’s actually beneficial to my weight loss. I have done 16/8’s and alternate day fasting and it is not enough to move the scale in the right direction.

(momzbusy2012) #25

I think for me, I’m going to have to cut it out completely to see if it makes a difference. I’m considering going 30 days without it (as well as sweeteners) to what happens.

#26

I’m going for my first actual fast, so there won’t be dairy or nuts and I don’t use sweeteners but very rarely anyway…for me it was bread-stuffs!
Hoping this will help me step away from my cheese obsession.
Keep posting on what you discover. And thank you for the link to the article

Yeah I was just offering an avenue you could explore not offering a medical opinion,I had read that you were already working with a healthcare provider ,just trying to be helpful and of service just brainstorming, another forum member asked me for the science and I have not had time to respond back to her yet,not sure if you’ve heard of Dr Sara Gottfried you can find her on YouTube she explores the connection between hormones in women and cortisol and many other topics and fasting and how it affects men and women differently, there are also studies on some of the largest fasting populations on the planet for Ramadan and how it affects their health and performance, I’pray that you find your answer soon,I fast on a regular basis and have never felt better

In general, I’ve replaced HWC with coconut oil and/or milk.

I limit to a few ounces of cheese, such as cheddar, some heaving whipping cream (HWC) as well as a couple of tablespoons of sour cream that I use to make blue cheese dressing; rarely all that on the same day, but that’s been the maximum on any one day.

… with the occasional exception of 1/2 cup of HWC when I make Carl’s Chocolate Mousse

I would eliminate veggies before dairy, personally. The fiber, even minimally in Keto-approved veggies, can feed gut issues that stall fat loss, as well as cause inflammation. But vegetables are so widely accepted that people don’t think of them as a problem usually.

#30

That’s what I was thinking (regarding IF).

(ketohealthclub) #31

Yes, there are so many individual reasons to stall. I have Hashimoto’s and thyroid nodules, and am insulin resistant. I fast three days a week and drink coffee with heavy cream and eat extra sharp cheddar on my “feast” days. My weight loss and healthy markers seem fine. If I stall, I think personally I’ll decrease my fat and watch my protein (sources and amount) more closely. So many things to tweak. You sound like someone who will eventually find what works for you.

From what I’ve been reading to understand my own deranged metabolism, cortisol is a stress hormone responsible for the fight or flight response which is released by the adrenals and when you fast your body kicks this in action so you get up and start searching for food so you don’t starve to death not knowing that food is readily available everywhere unlike in caveman days ,and all of this can impact blood sugar because when you fast your blood sugar can drop to low and cortisol has the ability to raise blood sugar if it falls to low through gluconeogenesis, now I use fasting very effectively but I don’t need to tell you men and women are different and hormones affect us differently, everything from glucagon, epinephrine, norepinephrine, growth hormone, and if your blood sugar and hormones are spiking that can potentially cause problems with weight loss stalls ,so women may have a harder time with fasting when it comes to hormones ,Chris Kresser has a good article, intermittent fasting, cortisol and blood sugar ,and not sure if you have read any of Dr Sara Gottfried’s work but she’s a Harvard trained gynecologist who has some pretty good information on hormones ,I can site many scientific studies I just don’t have space to list them all here but i don’t follow studies blindly anyway because my first question is always who funded the study and how was the study done, for every study I find saying sugar is bad I can find one that says it’s good same goes for coffee, meat, you name it,hope this help and hope you have an amazing 2017 keep calm and keto on
