The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

(I Am The Egg Man ku-ku-kachoo) #1

I’ll do them in reverse order, as I want to end on a positive note.

The Ugly: This week’s been a mess for me, eating-wise. Eating too much at once during my 1 or 2 meals, eating light snacks too frequently, and eating them too late in the day. I Feel AWFUL.

The Bad: Morning BG readings have been high all week…averaging abt 100 vs. the recent normal of abt 80. Cravings/hunger have made clean fasting impossible.

The Good: I haven’t totally derailed- I’ve been eating pretty KETO, and my macros have been … close. As I came out of the shower today, my daughter said, “Well THAT shirt’s too big!”
Best of all: It appears I’m not panicking… I’m just formulating a plan to move forward.

Not looking forward to Monday’s weigh-in.

Sorry to hear you aren’t feeling well, hope it gets better for you soon!! You are staying positive, so that’s a good thing!!! Sounds like you have done one of the hardest things already, which would be identifying that something is wrong, and accepting that you need to make changes to rectify this! You can do it!! No one expects perfection, just one step at a time and you will get where you need to be!! I am getting this time next week we will see an entirely different post from you!!! Good luck!!

(I Am The Egg Man ku-ku-kachoo) #3

Thank you Amy!

I am REALLY bad at the whole “perfection” thing. I’m not that way with others but I tend to be extraordinarily hard on me…drives my wife nuts.

I’m just try to be vigilant about making sure I don’t quietly, slowly slide back into my old comfortable mindset… I tend to get lost in there.

(Amy Ramadan) #4

Definitely easy to call back into old ways, believe me I have been there myself!! Seems like you are on the right track with that too!! Just focus on o e th I g at a time, one change at a time, and before you know it you will be where you want to be!! And even though things may not be perfect or where you would like them to be you still are getting positive feedback from your daughter, and that’s a great thing!!! Hold on to the good, and try to just let the rest slip away!!! Maybe bypass this week’s weigh in, and focus on what you can do before the next one!!

Consider factors beyond diet. Stress, sleep, infections/sickness, toxin exposures, etc.

Last winter I had a rough patch which appeared to be caused by a series of minor colds. This summer I had a rough spell that was apparently caused by creating a mold problem in my bathroom by too many hot baths/showers with inadequate ventilation. Most recently I’ve had rising BG and inflammation and I think it is due to an infected tooth which I hope to have resolved soon.

Don, very well said - and this is an important thing for many of us. I don’t mean “go ahead and cheat” or any such thing, but we’re complex creatures with a huge variety of influences and circumstances. I have totally derailed for days, even weeks at a time. Never have felt as bad as I did before keto and fasting, and I know this stuff works, and always go back to it.

(I Am The Egg Man ku-ku-kachoo) #7

Interestingly, Todd, it was 2 consecutive minor leg infections that made it apparent to me that my poor health (weight, T2D, immune system, etc.) was reaching a critical mass… I was no longer able to fight off common, relatively minor bacteria and viruses like I had all my life.

Fearful of losing toes, a foot, or worse, I decided to try keto…as there was some good anecdotal evidence that it helps control and even reverse T2D.

Hi Don
I like that you’re formulating a plan.

Before I started keto I had a lot of questions…

  • How come I’m always hungry?
  • What’s with those people that say no thanks I couldn’t eat any more
  • How can some people stay thin effortlessly?
  • How come my BMI says I’m morbidly obese?
  • Aren’t those BMI tables out of date?
  • on my trip to Italy why did I see hardly any fat people?
  • Is it a culture, a way of thinking that can keep you thin?
  • How can I think better to improve my own health?

I built up a toolbox of thinking strategies.

potatoes or toes… aren’t you glad you chose toes!
I did and lost a foot anyway… around my waist!! SW48, CW 36" (thats waist, not weight)

Not “letting go” and falling into old habits is my biggest priority as I move forward. Keto has worked to get me this far, as has fasting.

This last week things have gone a little haywire, so I’m trying to cling to those new behaviors like they’re a life raft in stormy seas.

(Raj Seth) #11

Me too.
Now I have many of those answered

  • How come I’m always hungry?
    :+1: Now I’m never hungry
  • What’s with those people that say no thanks I couldn’t eat any more.
:+1: I’m one of them now - more often than I expect, eating less than I can imagine…
  • How can some people stay thin effortlessly?
:+1: working on that one - getting there - effortless once you are willing to think ahead of what to eat
  • How come my BMI says I’m morbidly obese?
:+1: I’m a couple pounds from being just Overweight
  • Aren’t those BMI tables out of date?
:+1: yeah - they are, but I am up to date with the right diet
  • on my trip to Italy why did I see hardly any fat people?
Sorry - Never been to Italy
  • Is it a culture, a way of thinking that can keep you thin?
:+1: :+1: the Keto way of thinking, way of eating, way of life!
  • How can I think better to improve my own health?
:+1: think of things other than food - being Keto took my focus off food

This ——-> ME! Let’s both try not to be so hard on ourselves. I’m trying to overcome some 50-odd years of self-bashing. It’s not easy.

(I Am The Egg Man ku-ku-kachoo) #13

It’s really sad, right?

My own worse critic. I wish I supported myself the way I have my kids.

(Wendy) #14

I see this as someone who is on the right track. You see the choices that were bad for you and now you want to make better ones. If we never see it as it is we can’t make better choices for next time.
Give yourself some grace and don’t get discouraged. I know you can keep on “ketoing!” Congrats on the noticeable weightloss! You are definitely heading the right direction, even if you took a little detour.

(I Am The Egg Man ku-ku-kachoo) #15

Thanks Wendy.

This week has been a test.
I expect no loss on my weekly weigh-in tomorrow, but I finally feel back on track after a “reset” day yesterday.

I followed a 95% strict OMAD schedule, STOPPED eating at 6pm, drank water, slept like a baby, and have peed abt 30 times. :grinning:

My hunger is less today and I feel better.

I think I may have just outlasted my first real test since starting.

(I Am The Egg Man ku-ku-kachoo) #16

Well, I dragged myself down to the Urgent Care Clinic today to weigh in, despite the tumultuous week. Yesterday was day 2 of trying to get my sh*t together and get back on track and it showed: I must have peed a dozen times and felt like I consumed a bottle of Super Colon Cleanse.

Finally started feeling better and “back” to the routine late yesterday. Hunger is real, not driven by cravings. Snacking is gone. Whew! That was a challenge.

Weighed 404, down 1.5 on the week. Not a GAIN! Stunned, frankly. Started on June 1st, so this makes 91 lbs in 4 months.

I’m setting a goal of breaking 400 by next week’s weigh-in.

(Wendy) #17

Great news right? I hope you make your goal next week! Won’t that be a kick in the pants!

(I Am The Egg Man ku-ku-kachoo) #18

It’s awesome news. It shows me, and I hope others who may struggle, that the process works.

I lost some focus this week, let a few little errors creep back into my behaviors, got on track for the final couple of days, and finished with a loss.

More importantly, in the span of a few days went from feeling a bit out of control to back IN control. I’m ready to seize the day.

(Todd Allen) #19

I think you have made a great choice. I have mostly fixed all my symptoms of diabetes since dumping the US dietary guidelines.

I brought up the other factors because they have all derailed my progress at one point or another. When I started keto despite quickly seeing many signs of improving health when I encountered new health issues or any set backs to progress I was concerned I might be seeing a delayed adverse reaction to keto. I have since come to believe that keto has been purely positive but it isn’t magic. Other factors beyond diet such as stress, infections and poor sleep can thwart efforts to get healthy and lose fat. When I was not feeling good and lacking confidence in my dietary choices it was harder to stay on course. But now if something comes up it is easy to keep calm and keto on and consider what other factors may be causing trouble.

(Running from stupidity) #20

Whoa! That’s a real thing!
