Thanks for letting us follow along with this. I’ve been very curious about fat fasts (just finished an egg fast with good stall-breaking results), so I will keep reading this thread!

Hahaha, yes, you can get some great looks from people as you do this kind of thing. I unwrap packet after packet to put on my eggs, or meat, or just to spoon into my mouth. The sideways, or full-on glances are quite funny really! Butter…I love butter.

I can’t wait until a convention later this year. I’ll be doing 23/1 fasting, with a meal only at breakfast in the hotel concierge lounge. I’l probably eat all their eggs and butter and get the best looks! Then I will save the per-diem for a giant awesome and expensive meal every 3 days.

Mwahahahaha, I love it! Keto on, butter covered eggs, yum. I had to spread butter on my overcooked bacon last week because they got rid of all the lovely fat!

(Siobhan) #25

Ha, coincidence! I decided to do a fat fast this morning. I am going to make some fat bombs out of butter/cocoa butter/coconut oil… not sure what else yet. I will probably need something savory too, maybe just mayo will work.

48 hours in: Fasting blood sugar is 102. Ketones are 1.4 mmol. My body fat percentage has jumped from 44.3% on Wednesday morning(before I started this fast), to 53.0% this morning Saturday. I have lost 1 lb overall, but I seem to have lost muscle mass. I am going to stay calm and have my coffee because I don’t usually eat anything that has protein in it until 11:00am anyway. But I need someone who actually does fasting to get on here and tell me if this is normal for hour 48, or if I might as well stop until after my endocrinologist’s appointment on 8/24/17. Thanks.

Edited because I am typing before coffee and I’m a little freaked out.

Cross posting this here because I'm panicked and need advice

I’m having a hard time with fasts over 24 hours now. I wonder if it’s because I only have 5 more pounds to lose. Actually, I wouldn’t mind staying my current weight as long as I can continue to drop fat and build lean mass and bone. I’m considering a fast fast. Have you tried it yet, @collaroygal? I have about 34 pounds of body fat which offers about 1100 calories for energy, and my TDEE is about 1500. I guess I would need about 35 gr of fat for the day.

So, in light of my frustration with gaining fat and not lowering my blood sugar at all, I am going to end it at 60 hours. I don’t think fat fasting is a bad tool, I just don’t think right now it’s the tool I need. Since I am not doing water fasting without an endocrinology consult and I was dropping fat consistently on 2100 calories a day 75% fat and 24%protein and 1% (5 g) carbs to count for the 2.4g in 4 whole eggs and the minuscule amount of carbs in heavy whipping cream, I think I will just go back to that.
Keeping calm, Ketoing on. THink I’ll end it with a shot of everclear in seltzer

I am still just fasting with coffee/coconut oil/cream and if broth doesn’t keep hunger at bay, I will eat 3-5 macadamia nuts or 3-5 olives. So any nutrients I get will be fat, a very tiny amount of carbs/protein from the nuts/olives. Not sure what else I would be eating on a fat fast.

I am really getting back into IF, going 24 hrs. of fasting somedays as well. In fact, I started a 36 hr. fast and I am thinking of cutting it back to 24 hrs. But I have foodie friends arriving tomorrow, so I should be down as much as possible before they arrive.

They are looking forward to bison, the cheese warehouse near me, and some other wild meats, so as long as I stay away from some of the sides that come with those, I should be fine. Also I will be cooking up some pork chops for dinner tomorrow before we start venturing out. Those and a salad and I’m golden.

Those are pretty drastic body fat % nos. what are you basing those off of, since you didn’t lose 9% of your total weight, I doubt you ADDED almost 9% body fat. If you are using a scale, they are notoriously off for women. Did you get a caliper test done?

Your BS no. looks good as does the ketone.

(T) #31

It looks like I have the same stats as you - I love your math.

I’m trying my first fat fast today - started last night 6.00 (36 hours - baby steps). I need to start my day with coffee and hwc so I’ve used 50g there plus 5g mct. I’m writing a paper today so I don’t want to mess with concentration.

It’ll be interesting to see if there is a change in fat and muscle % too at the end of this, or over the next few days.

(Siobhan) #32

How are you measuring your bodyfat percentage? Scales that measure it are hideously unreliable, and iirc have an error range of about 8%
I seriously doubt you are losing muscle mass, it is probably either water weight or fat.

@tmcknzld Funnily enough I am editing something today and am coasting on salt, fat, and apple cider vinegar to make sure I keep concentration steady. Fat fasts, with good levels of salt, I find always keep me buzzing with energy :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I wasn’t concerned so much about adding fat, as I was burning muscle. I haven’t had good luck getting any body fat testing done because the only place I have found that does it is either a gym (and they want me to join), or a bariatric surgery practice (the do BMR testing too, but only if I am signed up to do their program or have surgery.) And yes, my scale is a complete POS, but until I am under 300 lbs I can’t use the good one DH bought.

I feel fine, but I am in a fantastically pissy mood  so I just gave up and am donating this circumstance to science. It’s 5:25pm and I am checking on ketosis and booze for @KetoCowboy . I have a cocktail of Everclear and seltzer water with grapefruit essential oil (GRAS y’all, don’t panic). I’ll be monitoring my ketone level at cocktail +30minutes.

I see an endocrinologist on the 24th of this month. He’s supposed to take blood and check for everything glandular. We’ll see what he finds and then I’ll revisit fasting, fat fasting, or PSMF. You never know until you try <3

(T) #34

Ok, I forgot about the ACV. I’ll add that to the day. Not very focused at present… I keep coming over here

(Teresa Driver) #35

Whoops, sorry @KetoCowboy. The original question was from @Stanislav_Jirak. Dude, I am doing a science for you.

#36

Please keep us posted on the results of your fat fast.

#37

Why ACV?

(T) #38

I think I’ve heard the dudes mention it more than once to help fat loss - didn’t they say it is a lipid??
And it’s lunch time on my side of the planet and I want to eat. First time faster problems.
Off to have salt and more bubbly water and ACV.

It’s just a sensation, right? I’ve got this!

(Doug) #39

Teresa, this really jumped out at me. I can’t believe that body composition change really happened, at all. I’d say you lost a pound of fat, and that’s it. :slightly_smiling_face:

(Teresa Driver) #40

All I know is I followed this fat fast protocol to a tee and based on the results and the blood numbers I believe I lost muscle mass. It was interesting though, because this is the first time I have had this problem with a fat fast. I have done them before as part of my Atkin’s Diet induction and they always worked the way they were supposed to. And I WILL definitely try it again under my endocrinologist’s care. I got so much good shit done. I repainted my front door, I decorated my front porch, I sealed the river stone tile on the powder room floor, I finished the entire 4th season of Sherlock, and I was sober for the entire time. Not a bad experience on the outside. Just concerned about the biochemistry inside. (Okay, I missed booze. But not as much as I expected to.)
