Success! And a question

#1

Hey everyone! Thanks for being here and showing us the ways! So far I’ve been Keto for about 2 months and am making some progress with fat adaption. A few successful fasts 24 hours and greater. Usually I get really hungry afterward so I think I’m still getting there. Here are some bonuses I’ve reaped so far…
10 lbs gone
IBS gone
Went from migraines weekly to once in two months
Hair and nails growing fast
Lost 4 inches around waist
Clothes fit
Have plenty of energy to do everything I need to do with my life.

Posting this list helps me because I’m feeling discouraged that I haven’t lost any weight since week 2, even with 24 hour fasting. I have been eating ALL the fat. I mean for lunch I had 8 strips of bacon, 4 Tbs butter, an avocado, and two eggs. I don’t see how I could lose weight eating so much but I’m not gaining either. I see so much info about calories, whether to count or not to count. I’m pretty confused. I want to lose 8 more lbs. I want to start counting calories again so badly. Some days I eat 3000 calories! Should I keep eating to appetite with my carbs around 10 g , or start more fasts to lower my calories? I’m afraid I’ll get too hungry and go off the rails. So confused!

^^^^^^ you’re losing fat!

Aside from the 10 pounds down and all the lovely NSVs (congratulations!!) you’ve lost fat! Like, a lot of fat. Four inches around the waist, clothes fitting kind of fat. That’s probably why you want to lose weight, right? To lose fat and get smaller? You’re doing it

You’ll hear “the scale lies,” and this is why:

Dear Madeline, thank you so much for your reply. That is encouraging for sure! If I am going for ten more it makes since that it won’t happen overnight. I’m the meantime, I am becoming more aware of my blood sugars and ketone levels and learning as I go. I can only imagine what my old blood sugar must have been! I hear that fasting just kinda happens after fat adaptation for some people. Not there yet but holding onto the hope that it will happen in due time.

From my understanding, once fat adapted (which you could possibly be - 2months) you can keep your protein ratios and lower the fat.

That’s sort of true.
Once you are fat adapted, your appetite will reduce, so you continue to eat fat to satiety, but the point at which you are satisfied will naturally be lower because your body is using your own fat for energy.
You shouldn’t reduce fat specifically but not force eating it to the point of nausea either.
The whole point of this WOE is that it addresses those natural balance mechanisms and appetite regulation that should happen anyway but are often suppressed when people have damaged metabolism. If you cut fat on purpose and are therefore hungry then that is a sign that you weren’t fully fat adapted and it is too soon.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #6

The beauty of eating fat to satiety is that once your excess fat store has been metabolized, you will automatically continue eating at the caloric level your body needs to get through the day, without ever having to calculate the changes in your body mass, your basal metabolic rate, and your activity level in order to figure out how many calories you need to eat.

Brettingsworth, cool. That’s kinda what I was wondering. I’m going to approach consuming less and see how it goes with my appetite. Hopefully I can cut back and see if I can get some more results in the right direction. I had a post induction party yesterday and ate a ton of dairy and nuts. Now I’m going to go whole food only, without dairy and nuts and see where that takes me. Seems the dairy really fires up my appetite and slows my ketone levels. Thank you for your reply!

Jacymac, I was wondering that! Since the fasts left me starving I probably tried too long fasting too soon. My goal is to be a good caretaker of my body and heal all the damages ive done trying to lose weight all my life with restricting. Thank you for these insights, I will apply that and eat good fats to satiety. Sometimes just hungrier than others, and notice it really pronounced when my ketone level plumets after too many accidental carbs.

Hey Paul, this sounds too magical to be true! I have faith that it will happen for me like so many others. My worst enemy is myself panicking over my intake, that is something I will not miss as I progress. I thank you for your knowledge and help!
