Substitute for Lily's Chocolate Bar?

(Pam) #1

I have 2 recipes I want to try (1 is linked below) and both of them call for Lily’s Dark Chocolate bars or chips. I have looked everywhere in town and cant find it and online its pretty pricey. Is there something I can use as a substitute? I have been looking at other dark chocolate bars and honestly I am not sure what the difference is beyond carb count and cacao % (not sure if one is sweeter than the other or what).

Any ideas?

If you can afford the carb count, you could just use 85% or something chocolate. For a 3 ounce bar, I’d substitute regular chocolate, maybe 65% or so.

You could also use 100% chocolate and add sweetener for the middle layer.

Personally, I think Lily’s chocolate has an odd taste.

You could also try the Lindtt (sp?) chocolate. They have some that have decent carb counts, and are dark chocolate

But cacao powder and cacao butter on amazon and make your own chocolate?

I’ve been trying to do that, but can’t quite get them to turn out like a regular chocolate bar… I must be missing something in addition to those two ingredients…

Some cocoa butter?

Could you sub in 100% chocolate baking bar (like Bakers chocolate on the baking aisle) and add your sweetener of choice?

I would normally suggest any sugar free chocolate chips or baking chocolate (e.g. Bakers). But the last time I got Lily’s chocolate chips, they were cheaper. The last few times, I’ve gotten them at VitaCost.com, for less than $4 for the 9-oz bag.

I usually only order from them when I get a $30 off a $100 order email offer from them, 3 to 4 times a year, and then I load up my cart. They currently have a 20% off offer that only lasts for another 13 hours. That would come out to $4.76 per bag.

Do you have a sous vide? I’ve been wanting to try this method for using sous vide to temper chocolate.

Oooooh, we do actually have one. Never thought of it for chocolate!
