Still gaining

(Felicity ) #1

Hi all,
Well we had our weekend away and I am so proud of myself, I did not cheat once! Zip, nada, zilch. I have never been that great at self control, especially around all that holiday food.
I did have a couple of drinks, but drank spirits on soda water.
I ordered things like chicken and pork belly with salads, eggs, bacon etc. I bought pork rinds for the trip and cream for hotel room as I felt like I wasn’t getting enough fat. We walked A LOT.
I also bought nut butter, I feel like this is going to be a no no for me, as I felt fat after eating it, any thoughts?
I laid off weighing myself like we talked about last week and I stopped restricting. However, when I got back I did jump on my scales, and I’ve gained again?! WTF is going on? I’ve almost gained 2kg in a week since starting keto.
I understand I hit this coming off only 500cals a day and zero fat, so I was expecting a rise, but 2kg? Do I continue on this?
We go to Vanuatu at the end on July, I was hoping to be close to goal by then (10kg down).
Any help or reassurance would be great.

Just relax.
Stress can and will induce insulin as well so that would a problem if you are stressing about it. If you hold unrealistic or deadline goals you will have stress and that will cause it to slow down.

Its hard to be keto adapted inside of a week, your body has to do a lot of things that require other things to happen. So you drank, that will delay being keto adapted and could even mean you are starting over again based on the knowledge that you gained weight. Thing is you really need to have the ketones flowing at this moment its a little more critical to not drink than couple weeks down the road.
Give it some time, I was nearly 2 full weeks of eating keto before I really started to see anything happen. Once I registered some ketones on the pee strips it was another week of weird things happening.

Ok. Thank you. Maybe the dressings in the salads were sugary as apposed to fatty. I did order creamy ones but that means nothing really. Now I’m home I can get back to my cooking and knowing exactly what is going into my body.

The friend that got me into keto was solidly keto adapted in about 7 days, it took me closer to 3 weeks, we are all different. Keto adaption is only the first hurdle, the time between that and fat adaption are a little easier but sort of dull as well.

That’s a starvation diet and great for doing a lot of metabolic damage, depending on how long you were doing that, you may need some time to repair. 2kg is beyond ignoreable.

It was 21 days and I never felt so bad. Thanks for your reply, you are all so helpful.

Ok. Thank you. I’m about to grocery shop. I’m very unsure on mayo’s and dressings as I’ve never really eaten them. What am I looking for on the label? Is Paul Newman’s Ranch ok?

(Chris W) #8

I think at this point mayo in the store is a no go, but for the soy oil not so much not being a bad balance of fats. They are in my life the #1 reason I get sore joints, being the utmost hypocrite however I just ate some with my brussel sprouts. If you have costco(my favorite keto place) as an option I would get the avocado based mayo it has no soy oil. I have not tried it yet finishing last bottle of kraft avocado(with soy oil). I cannot say I have actualy bought ranch dressing in a store in a long time, but my understanding is that and blue cheese are both pretty keto. The big things I look for in prepacked foods like that are seed oils, anything ending “ose” and dextrin.
Also be mindful of serving sizes.

Fear not it will get better.

Sadly I am allergic to Avocado. A real pisser as it seems to be a keto staple. I will just avoid the dressings and continue with my sour cream and olive oil. Might make my own too. Thanks a bunch. Hope I’m not getting annoying!

Well that is some of the worst news I have heard anyone say in a while short of death.

EVO, a splash of decent basalmic(can be carby) I like taztzkis very much.
Are you in the states?

(Felicity ) #11

No, Australia

(Raj Seth) #12

We don’t know much about your start point. With only 10 kg to lose, you are likely not obese. The 2 kg gain could just be your body rebuilding the damage caused by your 500 calorie days.
Trust the process
KCKO
It works. For real.
Let the process happen.

If you have a deadline, then read about and dabble in fasting

There is an easy homemade mayo recipe in Craveable Keto cookbook. Now that’s all I do-I refuse to buy it. You can use olive oil in place of avocado oil. Good luck!

(Felicity ) #14

Thank you

(Felicity ) #15

Thank you

(Jo) #16

Be careful using olive oil. Don’t use extra virgin because it will make the mayo beyond bitter. I use avocado oil and it is sooo smooth. I have never been able to find “light” olive oil, so I’m sticking to avocado oil.

(Marta Loftfield) #17

@fiddlebanshee you can find light olive oil at Sam’s club.

(Jo) #18

Not a member, never ever shop there. So I’ll stick to avocado oil. But thanks for the recommendation.

First, if you aren’t fat adapted, fasting isn’t ideal with keto. If you take the fasting route, fasting isn’t about calorie restricting. That’s why most people call it a fast/feast cycle. I feel like you probably saw my recommendations already. Did you ever hear about the Biggest Loser fiasco? Those people were restricting calories extremely and then gained all the weight back and then some with possible permanent damage to their metabolism (though, I’d bet keto would fix that.) You’ve done the same thing. You have caused metabolic damage, messed up all your hormones, and ignored your satiety signals for long enough. Now you have to fix all the damage and learn to recognize those signals again. This is a process and a way of eating, not a quick weight loss bikini diet for summer. I’ll also add that your body could care less what you think it should weigh and the control over it that you think you have is an illusion. Sure, you can temporarily do things to make it act how you think you’d like but it will always rebel in some way. So, for now, stop focusing on all the worry and other BS and purely focusing on eating keto. That’s the only thing you control, what you physically put in your mouth. Really dial in your ketoing. Low carbs, moderate protein, high fat. Cut down or remove snacking. Each meal needs to be sufficient enough to lead you to your next meal. If you feel the need to snack, make it a meal instead no matter the time.

Your weight gain is temporary and it’s likely not fat. You are also quite small to begin with and you will not see major fast losses like someone who weighs 158 kg.

As for whether you continue or not is up to you. Like I said, keto isn’t a weight loss diet. Ketosis is a built in metabolic pathway that allows your body to produce and utilize ketones as a fuel source in the low or absence of insulin. Ketones are produced from both dietary and body fat.

What do you mean you “felt fat”? Do you mean you got bloated from eating them? Or did you feel full?

Yes, good point. She says she doesn’t like avocados sonif she can find a light olive oil that would work.
