Starting over

(Tim Finkle) #1

Hi all, I’m new here and new to keto. I was eating keto for about 2 1/2 weeks until a few days ago when I gave in because of feeling so fatigued and having heart palpitations. I ate junk for a few days and I’m now feeling like crap because of that. I’m starting keto again today, I bought some magnesium and potassium supplements to help with the heart palpitations. Do you have any other suggestions or ideas of things I can do to get me through this initial period? Thanks.

Hi - try to see if you can get your minerals from food sources. I do take magnesium at night, but I get potassium from avocados. I’ve heard some dangerous things about actually taking potassium supplements. .

Keep your electrolytes up and eat fat when you start craving carbs. Look up Brenda’s keto-aid. As you become fat adapted, your hunger will decrease and you will start to eat less without really thinking about it. Tracking macros at first helps to keep track of carbs, but I wouldn’t be really strict about protein and fat macros. You can do that later to tweak your result.

KCKO!

Try 50 carbs a day for a month.
Then 30 carbs for 2 weeks
Then 20 carbs forever.

Or some variation thereof

The pursuit of quick results maximizes side effects.

Ketoaide. Lite salt. Avocados. Wheatgrass juice. Seeds (almond, pumpkin, cashew, sunflower). Spinach, broccoli, brussels sprouts. Wild caught salmon. Salads. Dark chocolate.

It doesn’t work for everyone, but this is how I started. I did four weeks - 100, 50, 35, 20. Each week was a little more challenging, and some swear cold turkey is the only way that works for them. This worked well for me and the keto flu wasn’t too bad because I had already been cleaning out my glycogen stores before I actually went into true ketosis. By Week 4, I was in ketosis and never felt too bad. Everyone is different, so what works for some may not work for others.

I like that protocol.
I did cold turkey.

Hi folks,
My first post, and I am day 5 keto style, after eating carb rubbish with the grandkids for two weeks, naughty, silly nana!!! Will not to that again, my blood ketone readings are already between .5 and 1.0, so I am happy about that, my body loves this way of eating, I really want to get rid of my last 5 kms, I am 170 cm, and sitting at 75, but I love the feeling of 70kg, any hints or tips? I have even done two days IM fasts, with dinner before 6 pm, and then lunch the next day, though my hubby always brings me a lovely cup of tea in bed, in the morning, and I just cannot say no that! All about balance, and what works for the individual, so any hints and tips, by the way, I have previously been eating this way for previous ?? 2 years, but have the occasional lapse, but I have never had keto headaches?? My body just loves fat, cheers, sue

Cashew has a ton of carbs, avoid if possible

#10

Why is tea bad? What is in it? I would avoid milk and sugar obviously but plain tea is ok. Maybe he could add cream if you must have dairy in it

(Allie) #11

Salt, good quality one not regular white table salt. Add it to your food (both cooking and on top).

You’re right, thanks for the correction.

I don’t eat a lot of cashews. I have a few of them around but if I eat more than one or two, I’ve had enough. There is something about the flavor of them such that if I eat even a handful of them, they leave me with a sickening feeling, can’t quite describe it, but they are definitely something I don’t overeat. Kinda strange.

I should have suggested pecans, which when roasted and salted, I really do like. Macadamia nuts are said to be really good, too, which I need to explore, can’t remember the last time I had some of them. Was it Richard that used them for the extra fat in the Feldman Protocol?

Yes it was Richard.

I only eat macadamias (Trader Joe and Costco are good sources), and raw walnuts, raw pecans or raw brazil nuts (brazil nuts should be eaten in limited quantities for reasons other than low carb). Sometimes raw pine nuts and pumpkin seeds. I do eat peanut and almond butter.

Cashews are not true nuts although they are said to be mood enhancers but they are very high in carbs for a nut so I avoid them

Tea is often contaminated with lead, arsenic, cadmium and pesticides. Most teas are grown in regions very reliant on coal fired power plants with poor environmental standards. Black teas tend to be the worst with green and especially white teas being much better. It’s not just the amount of contaminants in the tea themselves but the hotter and longer brewing that releases them more too. Paper filters and tea bags catch some contaminants and are considered better than brewing loose leaf teas with a non absorbent strainer.

(Brian) #15

I used to drink green tea quite a lot but I got away from it. If I do drink tea these days, it’s usually spearmint that I have either grown myself or know where it’s been grown. (There is an Amish family that lives near my dad’s place and they have some really good stuff they grow organically, I’ve seen their herb patches.)

I had often wondered how hard it would be to grow my own green tea but never pursued it, probably won’t, now. So many teas I could grow myself. Now, coffee, that’s on my list of things I wanna try to grow someday…

I am now officially depressed! I had never considered that

What about the celestial seasonings brand, any better?

(VLC.MD) #17

At what concentrations ?

The difference between no effect, good effect, and death … is the dose !

In most municipal water supplies, there are also birth control hormones and other popular medicines. But there is no fear as the concentrations are so low it isn’t significant.

I would also believe that food agencies would test products for contaminants such as lead, arsenic, etc.

I’m not going to stop drinking tap water because of the trivial concentrations of birth control hormones.

Excellent advice. I eased into keto similarly along these lines and as such have never felt deprived. Still got the keto flu, still had palpitations, still had sleeplessness- all these symptoms (for me anyway- everything is n=1 at the end of the day) were alleviated and eventually eradicated by increasing my salt intake, upping my fat, taking a powdered magnesium supplement as needed and getting quality sleep. Oh, and apple cider vinegar helps a lot too.

Good luck getting back on the wagon! @Timf5895

My best tip is to not be hungry. Eat keto, whenever you are hungry, and over time, you will naturally be hungry less often.
