Started today, need some advice!

#1

Hello everyone. Let me introduce myself: My name is Mariano, I am 26 years old and Im from Argentina. I started today with a keto diet and after reading and being unnable to find information about some matters, I decided to register here and ask you guys for some advice. I found about this diet looking for tips on how to use a skip rope correctly, and this guy recommend to follow it, so I started reading.

Some quick information about me: I was really sedentary till this moment, for a year or so (before I used to train at a gym). My height is 188 cm and weight 91 kg, I dont know exactly how much body fat I have, but I am completely out of shape. Also, I have no gallbladder. This is what matters me the most since this diet is high fat based and I couldnt find info about it.

My goal with this diet is mostly to reduce my body fat but I hope I can make some changes to the way I eat in the long term, and to experiment with it too since I read lot of great things about it. Im planning to do little exercise in the beginning, like 5 min skip rope and some weights at home, nothing big, but I really need it.

  1. My biggest fear is that I have no gallbladder - Can I follow this diet or will I have some problems?

  2. How should I start correctly (What advice can you give to a newbie like me) and how do I know if I am entering ketosis?

  3. To be honest Im felling weird now, I have this strange “heat” on my upperbody, it goes to my head, and also my breath is really hot too, like when you have a flu, but I dont feel weak or something. Also I urinated a lot today, and I didnt drink an excesive amount of water. Is this normal?

Well, thanks in advance and hope you can understand my english.

Hi Mae!! Welcome!

I can’t speak much about the “no gallbladder” but I can tell you this:

  • the urination is normal as you will lose mostly water in the beginning. I promise it will get better.
  • you need to add extra salt! All that water is flushing out salt with it. Most people on Keto need more salt than they usually have. It will help with those feelings of weirdness. Add extra to your food or throw a bit in your mouth and have some water. Use pink Himalayan salt or sea salt if you can.
  • as for what to eat - you can find Keto calculators online that will help you figure out how much to eat of what but as a general rule: less than 20 grams of net carbs a day (take total carbs and subtract the fibre), moderate protein, and add fat until your meals make you feel full (satiated)
  • you will know you are in ketosis when you have plenty of energy despite not eating many carbs. That flu-like feeling is your body switching over to burning fat instead of glucose. You can buy urine test strips online if testing is something you’d like to try.

I do recommend tracking what you eat using an app or website like Cronometer or My Fitness Pal - at least until you get an idea of how much carbs are in your food.

Good luck and trust the process!!

Hey, thanks for the help. Both of you. I started using Cronometer for tracking what I eat.

@ambergem I dont think I can find those kind of salts here in my country. I am using regular salt I guess, never paid attention to it honestly. Im adding salt to everything. By the way, are 3 meals a day ok? Or should I eat in between them.

Definitely don’t eat in between meals. The idea of the ketogenic way of living is to reduce insulin in the body. Every time you eat, your insulin spikes. Generally the fewer times you eat, the better. But eat as many as 3 meals a day if you need to at the start. Make each of your meals a full meal. Eat until you are satisfied. If you get hungry too soon before your next meal is planned, you know you did not eat enough at the previous meal (probably not enough fat) and you can adjust for the next time.
