Started my first attempt at a 3 day fast on the first day of lent. That was not by design 😂

I started my Ketogenic journey 1/1/19 and this past Sunday evening I decided I was going to fast until Wednesday. I had no idea it was going to be the first day of Lent but I always wanted to try and extended fast but I was worried I wouldn’t feel great. I drive a school bus so I don’t have the opportunity to go get water or anything to quell an upset stomach so I took a risk to see and decided to just suffer through it to see what was on the other side. The queasiness eventually passed and my stomach seemed to settle on its own once it realized it wasn’t getting food. I wonder if that feeling is your stomach prepping for food when you first wake up.
I’m in the last 24 hr cycle of my fast, I’m definitely going to fast again soon!

I definitely believe the clock and patterns of eating at specific times causes physiological anticipation. Although I was never queasy, when the clock approached my usual dinner time, I found the idea of eating quite compelling and my stomach and mouth agreed.

Can’t you bring a water bottle on the bus?

Ghrelin is a hormone that is produced and released mainly by the stomach with small amounts also released by the small intestine, pancreas and brain. Ghrelin has numerous functions. It is termed the ‘hunger hormone’ because it stimulates appetite, increases food intake and promotes fat storage. We have a rise of this hormone through the day at expected meal times.

I can and I do usually but there are days where I’ll forget or for whatever reason I can’t get my water bottle filled and those days I’d be super uncomfortable throughout, but now I think I have a better grip on things.

Congratulations on your first extended fast!

You will find that the third day and beyond just get easier and easier. The hard part is the mental game of ‘Should I eat that?’ It is amazing how, even though you may have no signs of hunger, your mind keeps looking at things around you and asking that question.
