Horrified to see black pepper has 4 carbs per tablespoon!
One tablespoon garlic powder is 7 carbs!
Spice carbs!
Think I will keep adding to this list. Seasonings are fattening!
Carbs per tablespoon
Onion powder 5g
Chili powder 4g
Ginger powder 10g
Cinnamon 6g
Chances are, you wouldn’t use a whole tablespoon of any of the above, but if you had a pinch of each to add to a meat dish, you have possibly added 6 carbs to a meal in seasonings!
Face palm! I have been loving soooo much pepper on my cucumber sticks for lunch!
I usually have a few good twists of salt and pepper on my avocado, but not anymore! I’m going to have to count the turns of the mill!
Easy folks!!!
A teaspoon of any of those things would render any single meal portion inedible.
And that’s one third of the listed carbs.
Butter Bob has a good list of spices, and a lot of other things.
A teaspoon is quite a lot of most spices. Like what you might put in a whole recipe with many portions. But it’s a good thing to keep an eye on.
Pepper is good, like where you take of the top off the pepper shaker and put down a good thick layer on top of the food.
I like to make my own stir fry paste that I store in the fridge using olive oil as the base, but I will admit I am heavy with the spices in it and throw a teaspoonful into a chicken stir fry etc
Wow! I like my spices, so this is definitely something to keep in mind…but also to Keep Calm and Keto On about. Don’t forget there are strong nutrient value packed into most spices as well, further contributing to our long-term health goals!
I’d better go check out some Butter Bob videos, too!
I don’t worry about spices at all as the amounts used are negligible, and they’re mostly fibre anyway.
Butter bob is awesome. I recommend everyone watching his videos. He has some great information!
Someone please tell me that pepper is all fiber …
I’m down two pounds already after getting in ketosis again … so maybe I handle my pepper carbs
Wow, I was shocked when I first saw this. I thought “cucumber is a melon, it’s full of carbs.”
But, not wanting to be a snob, I decided not to post. Instead I looked up the macros for cucumber. It’s about 3% carbs, well within keto- friendly levels. So while that is it’s highest macro, it’s basically a water stick suitable for holding any keto sauce or topping.
Thanks for helping me learn.

What they said. Herbs and spices are what make this WOE delicious. Give up herbed butters, no thanks.
The amounts used in most recipes are 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 teaspoons and the amounts listed are for tablespoons, so really not that many.
If you are really concerned about it make up your preferred spice blend with one or two of the items listed and use the mix instead of adding individual items to you meats and side dishes.
No one ever got over weight from eating garlic powder, etc. But lots of people have gotten to a good weight by using them regularly.
I’m going to have to! In combinations I must use a tablespoon a day of various spices. That could be giving me 6g hidden carbs!
