Hi, I agree that you should eat more fat. It’s so hard to do when we’ve been lied to and indoctrinated for so very long to avoid it. I now love coffee with coconut oil in and green veg dripping in butter but it’s all so much the opposite of what we’ve been led to believe that it’s kind of hard to do. I also think you should eat more if you’re hungry. So long as it’s mainly fat my experience is that it makes me feel good. I’m similar to you, (but 62) eating keto with my slightly overweight husband. I’m in it for the health, hoping to stave off all illness. Just watched Jason Fung and excited to try fasting together for 3 days but I’ll include coconut oil while he doesn’t.
I think this diet is so helpful. My main frustration is trying to influence but not to bore my 30 year old kids as I feel like we’ve stumbled on profound health truths that they need to know about!
Skinny Keto as a sub-group?
So true about the kids. Same here! I have definitely incorporated more fats into my diet, doing the Ghee and coconut oils in my coffee and just about everything else. It has been kind of hard , like you said, its going against the grain of everything I have ever learned. This is all still a learning process for me,but I am loving it. I have always been the type to cook all three meals a day. Was never into the pre-packaged processed foods , so its really just a matter of learning the whole macros deal. Do you have any suggestions on other ways to increase Kcals and fats without throwing my protein out of the ball park?
I’ve been experimenting with making desserts. I found a full cream coconut yoghurt that was low protein and carbs and high fat. Then started adding chia seeds to the yoghurt and allowing it to soak for 1-2 days. This yoghurt is pretty pricey but very yummy. From the coconut yoghurt I went to tinned full fat coconut cream and added the chia seeds. (Added 3 Tbs chia to 440ml can of coconut cream which after soaking was really thick). Makes for a yummy dessert (no need to add any sweetener of any kind in my opinion anyway).
I absolutely agree with you Rob. As a 55 year old skinny guy all my life I wasn’t keen on getting involved with Keto due to all the weight loss talk. I was diagnosed T2D 6 years ago and starting looking around for a solution and it wasn’t long before I came across Keto. The weight loss thing put me off and I went lower carbs and weight lifting to manage it instead and almost pulled it off but didn’t quite get my sugars under control (I never went on meds), that lasted almost five years. Four months after saying to hell with it, I’ll give it a try, my doctor looked at my numbers and said, I don’t understand what you’re doing but whatever it is keep it up, as he declared me “non-diabetic”. I know that’s not accurate but he was at a loss for words.
Keto is a great lifestyle for people who are healthy and want to stay that way but everything you read seems to be about weight loss or diabetes or some other health issue that needs resolution. Promoting the general well being you can achieve would be a good move as well as narrowing down the posts that may be irrelevant for the skinny people. I don’t care what the heading is called, whatever it’s called I’m sure I’ll contribute to it.
I feel this way about my parents lol. I’m only 30 and I wish they’d show an interest in it. They have been indoctrinated for too many years by low fat / eat less move more campaigns. It’s hard to watch family struggle with IBS/diabetes/depression/weight/longevity when you know something so simple would change their world and they don’t buy into it.
Rather like a political compass we can find ourselves in different “locations” at different times. I see the “lines” for “division” depending on your changing interests and needs. Keto for weight loss vs keto for other than weight loss, male hormonal health vs female hormonal health, fat reduction vs lean mass increase and so on. All of these intersect somewhere in the big picture. Not sure if I can contribute much to the naming part. NWLF Keto (Non weight loss focused Keto)??
While some of my focus is on weight loss it is not solely there. I want to know so much more than what influences weight loss. Even though not yet at maintenance as I’m still losing I would want to participate in the conversation.
I am 5’2" and have lost 13 pounds using keto. I now weigh 117. I could go as low as 109 but think that would be too thin. I am interested in maintaining my current weight and staying healthy. I am 59 years old this month and my mom lived to be 101. Health and the ability to stay active and keep my faculties are important to me. I am interested in doing fasting for autophagy but not for weight loss.
Hi,
I saw your post and wanted to ask you about your macros and how your diet looked like when you started keto. I am 5’3"-4" at 125lbs, 5 weeks in keto and cannot loose any weight at all. Well, I got from 125 to 123.8 once but now again at 125lbs. I have been 4 times at the gym this week (kickboxing) and skiing one day so I am pretty active. Just want to know about diet, calorie intake etc. of people with similar size that are successful in doing keto.
thanks!
You didn’t get an answers to your questions @myszka?
You’ve been doing Keto for 5 weeks and lost nothing? What have you been eating?
If you track your food each day you can determine your correct macros and adjust accordingly. You can figure them out here:
I responded to your question and yet it doesn’t appear here. I’m confused. Here was my response:
I do not approach this scientifically at all. I got a couple of weeks of meal plans from www.DietDoctor.com (they were free) and started losing weight immediately. Once I got the hang of how to cook for this new way of eating I was off and running. I limit the carbs simply and am, overall, eating less because I’m just not hungry.
Sorry if that is not very helpful.
Agreed, I’ve got nothing against those scumbags, I mean people with healthy metabolisms wanting to be keto, the more the merrier…BUT I’ve too noticed that the groups of people not doing this to loose weight, correct T2D, IR, and all the other insane issues we all have give very different and sometimes what would technically be bad advise for the majority of us. While most of the stuff should be the same It’s pretty noticeable sometimes and in many cases advise that would crash and burn us deranged messes. One side of me say if you do keto, than do keto RIGHT and we can all be the same…But even now with me in the gym more trying to put on more muscle I’ve tweaked what I’m doing, not by much but I’d never tell somebody over weight or new to keto to do what I’m doing right now as I’ve had years to learn my disaster of a metabolism and how it reacts to things. But many people don’t get that. PUT UP THE WALL! I mean… sub-group!
With the weight I have lost I needed new jeans. I actually got some for free from a friend who was going through her clothes and had some to give away. They fit me beautifully until I did a 44-hour fast. I didn’t lose any more weight but my waist size changed and the jeans are now too big for me at the waist! I’m going to have to take a tuck or two in them like my mom used to do to my pants when I was a kid! Same thing with my dress slacks. I guess I need to go shopping…
Yes, Capnbob, I am one of those scumbags! I am here for the health benefits long term just not T2D or large weight loss. I am 59 years old and want to be healthy for a good long time just in case I live as long as my mom did, 101.
What ever became of this!? I fall into that category, though certainly not skinny!! I am healthy and maybe only 5-8 lbs overweight (though most charts and calculators would say I’m in healthy range) I do want to get rid of a bit of excess fat in my midsection and backside and remain keto, for all of the additional health benefits, for life. Sounds like some call it “vanity” but I call it health! Anyway, did we ever get this subgroup started? Thank you for your wisdom!
I think this is a good idea too.
I accidentally received quite a bit of advice intended for “major water weight loss” etc, because I don’t have “TOFI” written on my pic and that led to some confusing results initially.
It would be cool to get more specific non-weightloss Keto related advice.
I like this idea. I came to keto not for weight loss, as I’m already at ideal weight, but for brain health and general wellbeing (I have the APOE4 Alzheimer’s gene). I also want to control cravings for carbs, for which I find keto helpful. The forum is fantastic as it stands, and it’s absolutely workable as is. However, sometimes advice given isn’t always as helpful as intended; for example, if you have a person who is already goal weight and they ask about extended fasting - someone replying might advise them on this not realising that they perhaps ought not to practise this because they don’t have weight to lose. Or someone like me who has been using targeted carbs for workouts and posting about this might be warned about it affecting blood sugar, which isn’t an issue for me because I’m not diabetic, etc. I think it’s true to say that people doing keto for weight loss or type 2 control are facing very different issues to those who are doing it to hone in an already decent health profile. Of course we can all learn from each other and gain perspective from different experiences and journeys, but it might be practically more helpful to have a sub forum. Then, you can browse the other areas as your interest takes you!
One person above labelled it “vanity keto” which I find off putting, though. Trying to get your health to the best place you possibly can isn’t vain. I’ve never had a weight problem but me doing keto for optimal health isn’t anything to do with vanity - it’s taking control while I can and avoiding future health problems. Better to be proactive than have to manage a host of problems later!
Actually, here’s something I’ve been wondering:
@admins does this forum software allow for people to have a “signature”?
Many forum softwares do - a space below your posts, where you can include some basic info etc.
If the software allows for this, I think it would be a very cool function to turn on.
People could put the date they started keto, their starting weight, current weight, goal weight, whether they are TD1/ TD2, whether they are TOFI, whether they have food intolerances, whether they EF/ IF / OMAD, whether they are fat-adapted or fat-adapting, etc etc etc
Scumbags - really?
My skinny husband is a cancer survivor and is fasting with me this week for autophagy because he believes it is the best way to prevent re-occurrence.
He mostly adheres to a keto diet for health reasons but is now struggling to not lose any more weight.
I agree a skinny keto subforum would be a good idea so those struggling to lose weight aren’t subjected to or confused by or ticked off with those with the opposite problem but want the health benefits.
I guess we are not getting a topic? I would like one because I am just trying to lose the middle age belly weight and high triglycerides. Nothing major. I feel like my comments/problems would be offensive to those with larger health issues. I am also trying to eat better.
