Skinny Keto as a sub-group?

(Rob) #1

First off, obviously, I love these forums. They have meant the difference between success and failure for me on Keto and its long-term sustainability. Knowing the science, seeing the positive experience of others and being able to ask questions and get multiple answers from n=1 experiences as well as science based expertise is… PRICELESS! :medal_sports:

As I scan the forums (way too often :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:) I am noticing one of many trends that strikes me as maybe needing some kind of categorization. I refer to the idea of ‘skinny keto’, metabolically healthy people with little to no weight to lose who have come to keto for longevity, long-term health reasons.

I know that these forums were founded to get the sick healthy and a lot of the most powerful members have supreme experience of this journey and are very generous in sharing their wisdom and learning with everyone. However there are an increasing number of questions coming from newbies or long-termers with the same titles as all the other questions (its own special issue) but referring to the lean cadre. While I am personally less interested in these questions or the problems of skinny people  (jealous much?), more importantly I am less able to help since I have no idea what works for skinny/healthy people. There are lots of people here who do and give great answers but you need to wade through all the stuff to see whether this calorie or fat or protein or exercise question is for skinny or obese people.

I think it matters - skinny/healthy people would be able to search for relevant answers more quickly and experts/members would be able to identify relevant questions for them to answer - or better, redirect them to existing answers. I don’t want to divide the forums and members in to 2 camps, just to make finding answers easier and clearer.

This is important because I think you almost end up with a division of information to the same questions based on the state of the questioner, almost demanding 2 wiki’s, 2 starting keto entries, etc. I know maintenance was recently created for weight stable folks but I don’t think that is the same as what I’m asking.

I could be way off and am happy to let it lie but that’s just how it seems to me.

PS I’m not wedded to any titles - Skinny Keto is probably a little divisive

Hey bro I got what your saying, infact im trying too gain since im so young!

I support you statement!

(Rob) #3

@Emacfarland - I thought you might like this idea as a key responder to lean keto-ers!

You may want to call the category “Keto for longevity “ or “Keto for health maintenance,” something like that. Remember that “skinny” doesn’t necessarily mean healthy! And conversely those with some “excess” weight aren’t inherently unhealthy  but I get what you’re saying, it’s true that keto is geared towards reversing metabolic damage and to people with a good amount of weight to lose. I bet we could figure something out that would work for people in this situation!

I knew ‘skinny’ was a needlessly divisive term and and skinny doesn’t equal healthy :grinning: but thought it might illicit a response.

I like ‘Keto for Longevity’, ‘Lean Keto’, ‘Preventative Keto’ but don’t truly mind what it’s called as long as it enables better categorization.

lets call it “Lean-O”!

I get your point

As one of the said Leanos, I think I like Preventative Keto. Lean Keto works perfectly too, but I think Id be proud to use the PK term more than the LK term when talking about the WOE to others. Its more positive and health focused.

Thanks for sharing these ideas and useful terms

Keto for life sounds s good title to me. Im in the maintenance stage now aiming to build more muscle.

What about a Tofi category as well. This is the polar opposite of what you are talking about I realize. Two of the least healthy people I know have BMIs about 20 and are both Type 2 diabetics with other metabolic or organ issues (one is 1 year past a major CV incident and the other is on dialysis).

The ones who are doing this because of longevity I do not have a problem answering questions, and I am not sure their questions are that different from someone with IR. I would like to feel that I am welcome participating in their discussions even if my BMI is over 30. We are all interested in longevity even if we want to lose some weight before our next birthday

The ones who may need their own category are the weight lifters and body builders who are trying to cut (not sure what that even means)! I feel like many of their questions require someone who has the same goals to answer

Maybe “Fat for Fit”

Exactly today I have had a discussion with my sister about the problem to find the right answers when you don’t want to lose weight. But also I don’t lift weights. I like Keto for life or Prevention with Keto.
I found keto while I was searching for solutions because of health issues but I am now convinced that it will help to have a real good life.

I’ll join this Trim Club no matter what you call it! :hugs:

Shhhhh! First rule of Trim Club…

What might be the second I wonder

Lean Keto Machines. <— My vote.

Not a bad idea methinks. Maybe a badge too, to self-identify ‘Maintainer’ or ‘Gainer’ or group @maintainers, @gainers for the other populations that aren’t on the lossy leg of their journey now?

Great post Rob.

I came to keto in 2013 because I felt like crap and my doctors could not find a reason. I weighed 175 lbs and had no metabolic problems (I am a 5’ 10’’ male). I discovered keto on my own and very quickly felt great. Ended up dropping 10 lbs of remaining belly fat but weight loss was not even on my mind.

So I think there must be others who similarly find keto to be a general health and wellness approach, not trying to reverse any metabolic issues. Keto has already yielded significant benefits to me and I expect to eat this way for life.

So at this point, do we call in the big guns (Admins)? They can run a poll for the name of the sub group or tag etc. and where to put it or how to use it OR do we still need to run a poll for whether there should be a group/tag?

I personally love this idea. I started this Keto journey with my husband. He is definitely trying to slim down and “firm up”. Myself, I have always been a small person. 54 yrs 5’5 1/2 " and a very solid 125 lbs. So I sure dont want to loose weight. I am sort of a gym rat 3-4 days a week. I have been searching thru this forum for some help with how to continue this way of life ( which I LOVE) and not loose weight. I am eating close to 1600 cal, aprox 20-25g carbs aprox 130g fat and keeping my protein intake around 80 g. I am hungry all the time ! Cant seem to curb this hunger. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I like this idea tremendously! The motivations you mentioned ( health/longevity) describe me to a T. On top of which though I wouldn’t mind more muscle mass, I have no extra fat to lose.
