Shoulder tendonitis and keto or carnivore diet

(Edith) #344

Excellent! A non traditional breakfast.

Bacon and eggs gets boring every day have to come up with different meals

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #346

Steak and salad, pork shoulder and bacon Brussels sprouts, chicken parmesan and loaded cauliflower would be a good start.

#347

The chicken parmesan is this a dish you make yourself or order out? You’d want to know if the parmesan cheese came from a genuine source or the grated kind like Kraft which contains cellulose.

Bananas
Clearly bananas are very high in carbs, the riper the banana the more carbs. I wonder is it ok to have a slice or two of banana and still stay on a keto diet? Thanks

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #349

If you keep your carb intake for the day under 20 g, why not?

#350

How many carbs in a ripe banana? 28 grams

#351

It depends on the size of the banana how many carbs are in it (probably not only that, fruits are unreliable, weather and breed matters, water content may change… maybe not so much for bananas as for, like, apples but still).
I ate banana with chocolate nearly every day when I was a beginner ketoer as it was very important for me… A few slices made no sense to me in their normal form but frozen banana is another world (and it was great to pour melted chocolate on it, in a few seconds I had a lovely dessert).
Whenever I could, I ate raspberries though, a portion was just as tiny for me but the carb content is smaller. I needed the vast majority of my carbs elsewhere so I rarely was willing to spend 3g on mere fruits (and I often ate many fruits on the same day. amounts matter, I always say)…

And banana got way too sweet even with unsweetened chocolate in the end so I don’t eat it anymore. But it was lovely while it lasted
Once I run out of erythritol and used banana to sweeten my pancakes  Banana is great as it’s sweetener and flavoring in one. I depended on it for my non-dairy ice cream. A little went a long way as it’s so very flavorful and sweet. (But I already had my changed sweetness perception. That didn’t take much time, I had it years before keto.)

As we already said, everything can fit into keto. There are no banned items. It’s best to avoid the super sugary items but even the sweetest fruits may be fine if you can use them in proper amounts. It’s only worth it if they are intense enough though. And that’s probably individual…
I couldn’t eat apples for years as they are super carby while not very intense. So a slice did nothing, even a whole did little. Except really rich, harder ones, I can get satisfied by 10g of them. (I have my own trees and a fruit lover SO so it’s easy to eat ridiculous amounts but I could eat a bite when canning them anyway.)

Some fruits are clearly impossible for most of us I suppose. Sometimes one just can’t stop in time.

URIC ACID
This is a huge concern for me on a high animal protein diet. My father had gout twice. Can you please talk about the danger of getting gout on this diet plan. Thank you

#353

You mentioned pancakes. I thought it to be impossible to have pancakes on this diet because of their high carb content. How many pancakes can you eat and still stay under 20 grams daily?

#354

These aren’t traditional pancakes. I actually forget people put flour into theirs unless I actively focus on it. Mine are carnivore. Pancakes are like sponge cakes to me: it’s all about eggs.
It helps that I am a Hungarian and we have crepe-like pancakes, thin, filled, rolled up. So the dough is very thin, no need for any kind of dry stuff, it’s fine if it’s a not very dense liquid (I actually have no idea how the dough should look like for American pancake. we call the thick ones like that).
So my concern is merely what I use for filling, super easy to make pancakes carby with the wrong choice. And I shouldn’t overdo them anyway but I got good at eating only 3-5! I had times when I had pancakes every day for weeks. The feeling is about the same as in my childhood but the pancakes are tastier now as the tasty eggs aren’t diluted much. I am an egg fan, it’s not for everyone, of course.
I used to make more ā€œnormalā€ paleo/keto pancakes, I have spent insane time and effort on them and it never was really good until I found the current version and it’s the best pancake ever for me. No surprise, I always liked only very eggy ones. Lucky me, Mom always made eggy ones  I just pushed it to the extreme.

Although it can be done, it’s very difficult to eat enough protein to overwhelm the uric acid pathway. On the other hand, the insulin level resulting from a high carb intake interferes with a host of bodily processes, and promotes the formation of uric acid crystals. A low-carb diet helps shrink the crystals, which as Dr. Annette Boswell explains, can loosen then from where they are embedded and cause pain. But her advice is to soldier through, because eventually the crystals shrink enough for the body to get rid of them.

Back in the days when refined white flour and pure white sugar were so expensive that only the rich could afford then, gout was considered a rich man’s disease, but since the advent of cheap flour and sugar, gout has started to be seen at all economic levels

#356

Anyone here ever experienced gout eating keto or carnivore diets?

(Bill) #357

I try…

(Bill) #358

Nope

(B Creighton) #359

Paul touched on it, but uric acid and gout are a problem more from fructose than protein. If you are worried about uric acid, don’t eat fructose.

#360

Yes I’m concerned. Stay below 20 grams or all fructose ?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #361

Avoid all fructose. Fructose, ethyl alcohol, and branched-chain amino acids are all metabolised by the same pathway in the liver, which is rate-limited and easily overloaded. Overload results in fatty liver disease, steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and so forth.

The good news is that fatty liver can be reversed within a matter of days, simply by cutting out fructose (and alcohol too, if necessary). Table sugar, sucrose, is a disaccharide consisting of one molecule of glucose bonded to one molecule of fructose, so any sugar mentioned in a nutrition label is generally half fructose.

For more information, watch the lecture, ā€œSugar: The Bitter Truth,ā€ by Robert Lustig, which is available on YouTube in various incarnations.

Trucha, the shoulder thing happened to me while I was on holiday overseas. I had x ray and ultrasound and they said it was bursitis, I had a cortisone injection which did nothing but cost me over $200. The only things that was helpful but expensive was several visits to a physio and special exercises. I still have some pain but not much now. Hopefully keto will help you, it’s never helped me though unfortunately, but I haven’t been strictly following for a while now. Good luck with your shoulder and hope it gets well soon.

#363

Thank you. In my case the cortisone shot helped tremendously as did cortico steroid pills, and Aleve as well. However I don’t want to rely on those to get through.
I was diagnosed NOT with arthritis but calcific tendonitis which I’m sure was made worse by consistent workouts with weights.
PT was not useful as I went there right after the cortisone shot which eventually wore off and the pain came back.
I still do my PT exercises to this day at home.
The past three weeks on the keto diet I have much less pain and greater range of motion which spurs me to continue with this diet.
