Is there much fructose in watermelon?

#365

If it’s important for you to keep your fructose intake low, don’t eat fruit. Except maybe in tiny amounts, I don’t know how seriously you should limit your fructose intake and how important fruits are for you. I would stick to lemon personally but I like sour, dislike sugar and find sweetness more and more overrated nowadays. It’s different for a beginner, of course.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 100 g of watermelon contains 1.21 g of sucrose, 3.36 g of fructose, and 1.58 g of glucose. The sucrose amount is half glucose, half fructose. So that’s just under 4 g of fructose per 100 g of watermelon.

Well if someone does keto under 20g carbs and have many carby items, the amount of watermelon is quite low indeed… But it’s awfully much sugar for a few quick watery bites if you ask me. Of course it’s up to everyone how to spend their allowances, be it carbs or specifically fructose. But if less fructose is better, fruit isn’t a good idea (or maybe a little where a satisfying portion is very small. whatever it means for the one in question).

100 grams is equal to 3.54 oz niot very much

So if watermelon is 6.15% sugar, then if we were to eat 11-1/2 ounces we would be getting 20 g of sugar, right there. That’s our carb allowance for the day.

Not a very good choice. The other day I had about two cupfuls

Supposedly, we can handle about 5 gr of fructose at a time without overloading the system. You might be able to get away with that 2 or 3 times per day. With a healthy gut, most will get metabolized before entering the system. I eat more than that for breakfast, but then I go work. I generally don’t have any or very little fruit for lunch, and typically none for dinner, although I typically will get some fructose in my dessert. Yeah, I eat too much sugar - that’s probably why I ended up doing keto. But, I still feel the fruit I eat is not the main culprit.

If you’re on keto are you eating large amounts of fatty meats and more than 20 grams of carbs?

This thread has gone so far off the original topic, I’ll close this one and let ya’ll start a new one.
