Scary post-fast sensation

(Ethan) #1

I finished a 5-day fast (my first under 200 pounds) and 2 hours after eating suddenly felt nauseated for a bit. Then the weirdest thing happened. I felt a sense of doom and had a half-numbness sensation for my entire upper body—like when your hand falls asleep and you just start to get the feeling back. It was all like vibrations. My fingers became stiff and clawed up. 5 minutes later, with some water and magnesium from my wife, it seems to have passed.

What happened here?

Was there a tight feeling across your whole chest and lungs? Not your heart. If so what you describe is how I felt the five or six times in my life that I had an anxiety or panic attack.

(Ethan) #3

Every muscle above my waist tightened. My hands and fingers stiffened to the point of resembling rigor mortis

#4

Did you check your blood sugar? Low blood sugar & rapid changes in blood sugar can cause symptoms such as you describe.

(Ethan) #5

I can’t find my glucose strips… I probably ate too much too

Google panic attack symptoms and see if it fits the bill. When I said tightness I was suggesting a slight uncomfortable difficulty breathing, I also felt a dizziness and an urge to sit down immediately.

Something else to keep in mind

(Ethan) #8

Yeah. I saw that, but while I have lost a lot of weight, my BMI is still 26.6, and I broke the fast with brisket and butter and then 4 eggs an hour later with butter—no carbs.

That’s why I thought an anxiety attack, it’s the first thing you mentioned. :cowboy_hat_face:

#10

Hopefully it was a blood sugar fluctuation then. Just be careful :slightly_smiling_face:

(Ethan) #11

Went downstairs and upstairs to get water—out of breath from it. Not sure why, but not feeling horrible otherwise anymore.

#12

If it were me I’d see a doctor - it may be anxiety or blood sugar but I’d want to be sure.

#13

I’ll try paging @Brenda for you

@EZB that sounds kinda scary… yes there are some typical things like BG an refeeding issues but, yes a dr visit and complete blood work would be a good idea. If you feel good now no panic needed, just learn.

This happens to me periodically over the last several years. I attributed it to my autoimmune disease but really I have no idea. I haven’t experienced your other symptoms but if you figure it out, please share.

It sounds like you had muscle cramps in your hands. This has happened to me when I’ve ridden the motorcycle several hundred miles. Something was unbalanced obviously when you broke your fast @EZB. Whenever you have a concern like that you need to see your physician and have blood drawn to make sure you’re okay. I’m not about to try to diagnose you here. It would be unsafe and unethical for me to do so. I have not heard of this particular situation happening, no.

(Ethan) #17

Something was off for sure. Maybe I’ve lost too much weight recently to do these fasts. As a safety precaution, I’m limiting future fasts to 3 days.

(Marianne) #18

I think that’s a good idea. Maybe you can reincorporate food back slowly.

It was interesting. This was the first time I ate as little when refreshing. In the past, I’ve eaten massive amounts of liver, cheese, meat, eggs, and fish in a matter of an hour—terrible idea—and gotten sick. I ate a normal amount of just brisket and butter and then 4 eggs 2 hours later this time. I felt it was reasonable. However, I am down a substantial amount of weight since March—about 15%. I’m thinking things are a bit different now.

First time I did an extended fast on near the end of day 3 I got nearly the same thing, very strong tingling/numbness, emotionally felt really weird kinda got really afraid, I knew there was nothing to be affraid of which made it even weirder. I had emergency food and my glucose meter with me, my sugars were normal and I didn’t resort to eating my carby get out of trouble fast food. In about 10 minutes it passed and since my sugars were fine I kept it up, did many multi day fasts after that and it never happened again. I’ve read of basically the same thing in others in different places. Seems some of us get really weird symptoms the first long fast. Maybe being under 200 made your body act different?
