So far I’ve watched a ton of Dr. Berg, Dr. Berry, Thomas DeLauer and others. I’m starting with lazy keto just to get a handle on carbs first. I’m finding lots of conflicting information on how many carbs are in 100 grams of each vegetable, etc. which sources are the most reliable? Is diet doctor.com good? I need to lose another 45 lbs and also watch my blood glucose as it is currently 109. I’m also on a tight budget and cannot afford to keep throwing away the wrong food. Any and all input is greatly appreciated!
Reliable Resources
www.dietdoctor.com is brilliant…great recipes and a really useful resource the basics of which are all free
Dr Berry is great as well manages to explain things in an easy to understand way.
Also maybe check out Dr Fung at https://idmprogram.com
This advice may be controversial… but, be REALLY careful with any You Tube characters presenting themselves as Doctors and experts, a lot of them are just pushing products, books, and trying to take your money with slick marketing.
T De Lauer is definitely a good one, i’ve watched loads of his and they seem legit, but Berg, Dr Oz, even to some Degree Dave Asprey, etc etc they really arent proper Doctors or Nutritionists and therefore are not qualified to give you advice on nutrition.
Primal Edge Health is respectable with keto and has some good ideas, there’s a cool guy who does videos for them on You Tube (he also does personal training/coaching from afar with his partner)
You’re far better on this forum with people who are doing what you’re doing, or other independent online logs and forums.
You’ll find your way, but don’t fall for the You Tube stuff 100% of the time, it’s a money making portal in reality.
Myfitnesspal is a good app/website to use, not sure if you’re already using that.
Dietdoctor.com is a great place to start. The cautions about many online sources & personalities are correct. I won’t trust anyone trying to sell you something.
There are infographic pictures on dietdoctor that show which veggies to eat & which to avoid. You can also use the search engine here to look for “keto veggies” - I know I’ve seen newbie advice about what to eat & what to avoid.
You probably know to avoid potatoes, grains and most root veggies. At least at first, I’d stay away from nuts as well, just because there’s a wide variation in carb content and they are so calorie-dense they can derail you, especially on lazy keto.
WRT protein, eat fattier choices (73/27 ground beef, bacon & eggs, chuck roast/steak, pork shoulder, and chicken thighs with skin are economical AND inexpensive), and when you eat leaner stuff, add some fat.
Where’s the conflicting info? Can you give an example? I normally use the USDA nutrition database or Cronometer to look up nutrition info - there’s some difference, but not a lot (except between raw & cooked versions). MFP & Cronometer both allow user input, so make sure you’re taking that into account when looking up foods - Cronometer tells you where the info originated, which helps.
Most important, eat whole foods. Not processed crap. Keep it simple, especially at first, and don’t force yourself to eat things you don’t like. That’s not sustainable!
Most experts say it’s ok to use stevia but Dr. Berry says no. I’m seeing different carb counts for the same amount of the same veggies. Can’t seem to get a consistent number for tomatoes or broccoli. Most “experts” recommend a consistent and reasonable number of vitamin and mineral supplements but Dr. Fung says they increase the possibility of cancer. That’s actually on the DietDoctor site. I’ve also seen differing views on how much protein to eat so I picked a median of 1gram per kg of body weight which for me would be 84 grams per day. Now I just have to figure out how to fit that into a macro
I noticed that too when I started keto. Google says a cup of broccoli is 6 total carbs, while cronometer says it’s 11.2 carbs (here I wonder if Google is counting only net carbs). Healthline says 100 grams of tomato is 3.9 carbs while cronometer says it’s around 4.5 carbs. So who is right? To me it doesn’t really matter as long as I stay in ketosis and if I over eat my carb limit by a few carb grams of broccoli there should be no guilt since the stuff is actually good for me. I decided to stick with what cronometer tells me. The numbers it gives me is usually higher than numbers given from other sources and I’d rather err on the side of caution and take the higher number.
I’ve used MFP in the past but that was when I was just counting calories. It did help me lose 57 lbs. but I totally stalled and felt I needed something drastic. I’ll check it out again.
I see what you mean. The “experts” are either selling stuff or asking for money. I’ll stick with the forum, DietDoctor and Virta.
