Refeeding low carb/Keto

(Teresa Bringardner Morley) #1

This week I am wrapping at a 21 day fast and have been researching how to refeed. I want to refeed slowly and hope to avoid any GI issues.

Many sites/blog suggest starting with watermelon or other high water fruit. Since I intend to eat low carb/keto in-between fasts, I’m coming here to get information from experienced keto fasters.

I intend to continue with intermittent and shorter duration fasts of 3 - 7 days throughout this year. How long should I wait between this long fast and starting another.

I appreciate any and all information. Thank you!

Congrads on the fast. 21 fast is definitely an accomplishment. If your going to go keto i would definitely stear clear of watermelon or anything with significant carbs. I probably would start out with some bone broth and a handful of nuts.

Wow, super! I have had good results breaking my fast with olives & maybe an ounce of macadamias.

I am also fasting and was looking for the same info online. In order to avoid refeeding syndrome, which would be the worst thing that could happen, but is very unlikely, I found a website that showed how doctors actually treat refeeding syndrome. They basically supplement with magnesium, potassium, phosphorus and smaller amounts of calcium. Refeeding syndrome happens because the blood contents of these nutrients are suddenly absorbed by the bones after you begin eating again. Blood levels can get too low and cause danger. I take a multivitamin every day of my fast. Also, I plan to ease into eating by eating a meal with high levels of these nutrients. Salmon or chicken, almonds, salad and dark chocolate are all high in these nutrients. Good luck!

I woke up with a bad case of vertigo this morning. I immediately took some sole water and a magnesium and probiotic. Continued to do that periodically until I felt better. I felt slightly weak all day. I’m still not sure I’m eating enough. I’m not very hungry at all. Today is the 4th day after breaking my fast. I had a couple pieces of bacon this morning when I was suffering from the dizziness. Part of a salad and 2 grilled chicken nuggets from Chic-fil-a. Around dinner time I had an egg scrambled with a bit of half&half, spinach & cheese and a couple pieces of bacon. Then had a slice of cheese and a few olives. I’ll take some more Sole water and magnesium before bed and hope for the best tomorrow.

I hope you feel better. Whenever I feel rough, I’ve found bacon to be like nectar to my body, lol.
