Readers Digest says keto no bueno

(Keto in Katy) #41

The clear suggestion of your post was that a ketogenic diet, according to a surgeon, was implicated in the death of patients. And that their “gut had basically stopped working” — whatever that means. This could be true, of course, but it seems exceedingly unlikely that it actually worked out that way based on what we understand and observe with this way of eating.

I have this strange inclination that it (“gut stopped working”) had something to do with pancreatitis and attempting keto without dealing with that issue first, then blaming the keto (hard to believe that a doc would do that but I know truth is stranger than fiction sometimes)!

Maybe they did not even know they had pancreatitis nor did the doc (surgeon)?

Pancreatitis can sometimes come on without warning, and it can be fatal. An acquaintance of mine came down with acute pancreatitis while on holiday in the Caribbean, and she was gone before they could get her on a plane back to Britain. As far as we all knew, she was in great health. She was a great lady, and her death was a tragic loss.

It mimics the symptoms of so many other things that could be wrong with a person it is hard to pinpoint it right away! (e.g. eating fat creates pain in the gut and stomach is one of them!)

I am sorry for the loss of your friend!

As silly as this might sound, I wonder if a person that’s had their appendix removed is at more of an upset in gut function. I remember hearing somewhere that the appendix does play a role in gut bacteria almost acting as a repository of things that might be needed at some point. I really can’t remember where I heard that. But it’s something that came to mind.

What’s really bizarre is it links to another RD article that basically says it’s an easy way to lose fat!

‘Gut’ by Guilia Enders makes this point - that the theory is that the bacteria live in the appendix until the gut needs to be recolonised after antibiotics or gastro etc.
