Questions about using broth

(Virginia ) #1

Hello everyone, I’m just one week into Keto, and have been speaking with my husband @Digital_Dave about keeping up with electrolytes. One thing I was interested in was using broth. Since he doesn’t, I thought I would ask those here who use it.

I like broth and think I could definitely find this helpful, but wasn’t sure how much one should take a day. I wanted to know who might use cubes, how much do you suggest, or what other type of broth would you recommend?

Thanks - V

Since I’ve only been doing Keto for about a month, I can’t really draw any conclusions, but wanted to comment. I have made my own chicken broth for years, and find it to be filling and satisfying. There are always several pints in the freezer, so if I don’t have a ready source for a Keto meal, I just thaw out and drink the whole pint. Lots of salt and pepper, yum.
If it is regular “store bought” bullion cubes you are speaking of, I think they are full of chemicals and artificial flavorings. And salt, of course.

The thing with broth is that the calories, fat content and protein content can vary wildly. Bone broth has a lot of protein compared to bullion or mushroom broth - that could be good or bad depending on your objectives. Some commercial broth/bullion is full of things like MSG and maltodextrin, not too appealing IMO. Homemade broth is so much tastier but it’s pretty much impossible to guess the nutrition or macros in it. Personally I’d say just about any kind is a good way to up salt and avoid carbs unless you’re doing a homemade broth loaded with carrots & other carby veggies (I make an awesome stock with all my scraps, but I couldn’t swear it was low carb), but watch the bone broth if you’re fasting or feel a need to keep protein in check.

ETA: Pacific brand organic mushroom broth is my fave, 5 calories and nothing but mushrooms, water, salt and garlic.

Dr Eric Berg thinks that bone broth can knock you out of ketosis due to the high protein contents.

I also got suspicious a couple of times.

I’m new, too, and was questioning bouillon cubes. I think it’s part of the problem with so many websites covering keto with conflicting information. I started Monday and was going to pick up some of the cubes at my grocery trip Sunday but one of the ingredients is sugar!

I have several other questions so I think I’ll write a fresh post after reading more newbie forum questions. So glad to have found this forum.
