Question About Total Carbs!

(Ye boi) #1

Hi, I’m currently on my second day of doing keto and doing pretty well so far. I don’t have a problem with not eating carbs at all. Anyway, I was wondering if 39g of carbs a day is too much? I looked at a lot of articles and things and they all vary, but most say to stay between 20-50g. Now I don’t know if that 39g is net carbs or total carbs. I read you need to take away the fibre to get the net carbs, but I’m pretty sure where I live, they already do that on the nutrition table on foods so I’m not sure if I need to do that. So all I know is I eat 39g carbs, pretty sure that that’s total carbs, and I also eat 35g fibre from all the veggies and small amount of fruit. I just want to know if anyone knows if 39g is too much or whatever?? Btw, all the carbs I eat only come from veggies, some fruits and nuts/seeds. No grains or potatoes etc.

It could be too much, but if it takes you a few days to taper down it’s OK. You might want to cut out the fruit. Remember, this is a lifestyle and do what works for you, not someone else.

It’s another one of those things where you have to find what works for you personally…

I would agree. You just need to experiment and adjust after you see how you are responding. I personally do use a lower level but I have type 2 diabetes. I like 20 :frowning: as my goal. I decided I did not want to chase total versus net carbs so I just look at total carbs. My carbs are coming from green leafy vegetables or the incidental carbs from other keto foods. Relax and enjoy!

I’ll second the others with saying you may have to cut out fruit. I’m pretty muscular and athletic, and I can do 40-50 total grams of veggies and nut butter and stay in ketosis, but if I add a few berries, it drops my ketones way down. We’ll all different, of course, so you have to test, but I think it’s hard for most people to do sugar (which is basically what fruit is) and stay in ketosis.

I am puzzled about carbs also. Is it 20 g, or 5%? Because at 20g, that means no fruit : (

(Christopher Bingel) #7

If you’re just starting, I would avoid fruit. After a few weeks, you can try and add some berries back in. But initially it’s all about fat adaptation, and sugar doesn’t help with that.

(Chris McRoberts) #8

Ok, but should it be 20 g, or 5 %?

My doctor put me on 70%, 20%, 10% net to start. I’ve gone down considerably since then in the carb totals, but something to keep in mind.

(Carpe salata!) #10

In keto there is no % . It’s 20g carbs and yes, it’s pretty severe on carbs ie no fruit.

Protein is ~1g per kg of lean body weight … maybe 80g

Then go crazy on fats ( to satiety)

This tells your body to get on with burning fats.

@cbingel could you please clarify the diff between berries and regular fruit?

Say I figure out that 50g berries is 4.2g carbs, why can’t you just have 50g pineapple which is only 4.1g carbs?

I need to know the deal with berries?

I was told there are other keto fruits too… Are they to be shunned?

(Duncan Kerridge) #12

Pineapple is closer to 6g net carbs for 50g, but there’s no difference in getting those 6g from pineapple or from berries if that’s what you want to do. Or any other fruit for that matter. But 6g is a lot out of your daily allowance to spend on a 50g morsel of food. Which is the main reason most people on keto don’t eat a lot of fruit, not because any particular fruit is to be avoided.

(Zu) #13

Then WHY the emphasis on berries… and I’ve been just counting total carbs, and keeping under 20 (and then going over a bit and lol-ing)… SO… Am I supposed to be counting NET carbs, and not total Carbs?

The reason for pineapple is it actually a medicine for my body, it eats cysts, and aids digestion and weightless for my blood type. so I have been having a very small wedge 20g or so here and there. But it does spazz out my carbs total a tad… but if I have been calculating carbs wrong all this time then maybe I have a little more carb grams up my sleeve than I thought?

(Duncan Kerridge) #14

Some people can get away with 20g net carbs, some people can only tolerate 20g total carbs, the only way to know is to check your own results. Berries work out well if you’re looking at net carbs as they contain quite a lot of fibre, pineapple not so much.

(Zu) #15

Hmm thanks for that. Will check now for high fibre, low carb fruits.

(Duncan Kerridge) #16

You’ll probably end up with a list of berries

(Allie) #17

Grams not percentages.

(Zu) #18

berries yes, but surprisingly nectarines, peaches and apricots? there were a few consistent on multiple lists, and then a few weirdo ones from left field… starfruit was interesting…

I don’t think there’s a difference as far as nutrition goes, but if you’re trying to reduce your insulin response, that’s a lot of fructose in a few small bites of pineapple. Google says 6g in one 1/2" slice: https://g.co/kgs/U5gAV3

Keto doesn’t shun any particular foods, just tries to minimize sugar and as a result your body’s insulin response. Especially at first when you’re trying to get fat adapted, it’s often counter productive to continue to eat small amounts of sugar, as it can extend the process.
