Probiotics post water fast?

#1

Alright so just broke my 5.5 day / 133 hour water only fast. It was my first extended fast. Broke it with veggie broth. I’m wondering if and when I should start up probiotics again?? I know everything was probably wiped clean and I want to repopulate GOOD bacteria so I feel like this is precious time (especially since part of the reason for this fast was gut issues / SIBO). The probiotics I have are prescribed my by ND and are supposed to be specially formulated for SIBO. She’s out for the holiday so I can’t ask her. Still not sure if I should start them up to repopulate the good guys or just eat veggies and let my body do it’s own thing for at least a few days. Any advice fasters?!

Also… maybe this should be a separate topic but I’m thinking I’ll eat some banana at some point for potassium. I’m craving it. But worried about the sugar post-fast. Also know this is anti-Keto so go easy on me. How long until I should eat any small amounts of fruit (even berries) and/or what are other ways I can make sure I get my potassium back up (preferably through food).

PS I’ve been trolling this forum my entire fast and am so happy I found it. Thank you amazing strangers for being here.

Below is a list of high potassium foods:

**Avocado**
Acorn squash
**Spinach**
Sweet potato
**Wild-caught salmon**
Dried apricots
Pomegranate
Coconut water
White beans
Banana

So there are some keto friendly things on the list!

avocados, leafy greens and salmon also make the magnesium list.

I use homemade sauerkraut as a probiotic, but wait til I’m sure my stomach is up to it after a fast - depends on the length of the fast, if I’m feeling at all queasy after eating I assume I’m not ready for something that strong. I really don’t know about a pb supplement, though.

I have done many EFs. I break with psyllium husk and water. then liverwurst, pork rinds, etc.
I would not have a banana with a shotgun to my head.
or any other starchy, sugary, carby food everything that can come from a carby source, could be better supplied by animal products. except carbs - but …:grinning:

@Rajseth I’m going to be straight with you Rajseth. I’m a vegetarian (gasp). I know that’s not ideal to a lot of Keto-ers. I’m new to Keto specifically however I’ve been eating a version of “vegetarian paleo” for a few years. Lots of good fats. Side note I learned on recent blood tests my body isn’t processing fat properly (among other things - like blood sugar, etc) leading me into even more research. So, anything I can get from veggies is top notch as that and fat are really my two main food groups (I still eat eggs, ghee, and although not vegetarian, made the decision to consume collagen powder for a bit).

Thanks kin. I suppose I could have looked up that list myself :joy: sorry. Just went for some avocado. And hmm okay, yeah I’m still not sure on the probiotics

Glad you asked, it was info I needed to know for myself. Thanks. :slightly_smiling_face:

Vegetarian keto is hard - harder if you are strict (Indian style) vegetarian- no dead animals or even eggs. I don’t know what you can do for keto other than deep fried green veggies, avocados and … deawing a blank here

As for probiotics- I always have home made lacto-fermented sauerkraut and Kirby cukes so I have those. No probiotic pills for me - no sir!
