Powdered Magnesium Citrate, and other supplements

(Denise) #1

I’m not big on supplements but I do take magnesium, and add potassium and pink Himalayan salt to my drinking water jug. The capsules I’ve been getting of Mag. citrate are spendy and I see a bulk purchase of the powder is a better way to save some money.

Has anyone used powdered Magnesium Citrate and just added it to water? I’m just wondering if I can gag it down

I’ve taken it since I started Keto, so about 2.5 years and I really think it’s good for me. I am eating a lot more red meat now, and only meat, chic, fish, pork for dinner and my tummy aches are evening out, not as bad I mean. I’m also take Berberine now for cholesterol just to see if it will bring my total down a bit. I know what some are thinking that I’m worrying about that, but Berberine is said to be good for a lot of things so I’m using it for a time just to see.

Also, I got diagnosed with just over the safe-zone by .1, with osteoporosis, so I do my collagen @robintemplin takes, and I love it, enjoy it in my coffee. And I now take Boron as well for bones. Figure I’ll make sure I’m getting enough from my food as how can we be so sure that the soil isn’t depleted.

Well, I’d like this thread to be about supplementing our diets, suggestions, input, information on anything I’m taking that may not be so good to do. I think the worst thing I’ve read on any supplements is not all of the nutrients are actually absorbed when supplementing. Makes me wonder how much I am absorbing.

Discussion very welcome  as always, Denise
PS btw @Pete_A, my triceps got a good bit of work doing those plank thingies  Gonna be doing more of those puppies, but yes, I’ll remember to suck in my abs too

I did that for a while. It really doesn’t have much of a taste, I was adding lemon juice to my mixture. Be careful with mag citrate, it can cause :poop: issues. I take capsules of mag. glycinate these days as I have to have a lot of mag. daily.

Good luck sorting yourself out.

Yeah, no issues here, never bothered me and I ended up taking 1000 per day (a.m. and p.m.) and I did try another form called Mag-L Threonate but I think I’ll stick with my Citrate, for now anyway

Actually, I figured it out and I’m not saving that much money anyway, and it’s easier to take my capsules so I’ll just stick with the one I’ve been using. Thanks for sharing your info, I won’t touch lemon now because a tsp a day in my water caused tooth sensitivity for me. But I cured that by only brushing with baking-soda, with a couple drops of peppermint oil.

I have to take around 1000 mg per day as well. My husband can barely tolerate 200 mgs per day. It is interesting how much we can vary from each other.

I use baking soda and hydrogen peroxide for cleaning my teeth. I like that it doesn’t have a peppermint after taste.

(Denise) #5

I use the hydrogen peroxide with water as a mouth rinse afterwards I like that too the only time I use the peppermint oil is if I’m going out of the apartment but like at night when I brush my teeth before bed I don’t use any of that just the baking soda and mouth rinse glad to know someone else that uses the same because I feel like it’s the most healthy thing I’ve ever done for my teeth and gums forgot to mention I went ahead and ordered my capsules so just going to be easier and my mag citrate I buy is just nine bucks for 100 tablets so since it works I guess I won’t try to fix it haha

I swear by collagen. It vastly improved my skin, nails and hair and I assume, bones. After just a week of taking that supplement, you can actually see a difference. I also think it helped my skin tighten with all the weight loss - I expected to have folds of skin hanging off me - none of that. I also credit my purposeful stalls with helping with that. I have an old woman’s hands (well, surprise surprise, I am an old woman) and the skin on my hands has firmed up and has a lot less wrinkles. I do swear by collagen, especially for big losers who are older.

How long did you take the collagen and what brand are you taking because I think I’ve been taking mine several months at the least maybe almost a year I’ll have to check back when I talk to Robin about it because that’s when I had first gotten some I’m 70 and what I did notice yesterday was my skin on my legs felt softer and they’d been really feeling dry and kind of like I saw crepe paper skin

I make a salt mix of 6 parts sea salt to 3 parts potassium citrate, 2 parts magnesium citrate and 1 part calcium citrate. I use this as my table salt for everything except high temp cooking where citrates scorch. Prior to doing this I had very acidic urine and was losing bone density and both issues resolved upon doing this. Somewhat surprising to me an issue with episodic water retention also improved.

I take a multi collagen complex - type 1, 2,3,5 and X. I am not brand loyal.

(Denise) #10

So you just pretty much use whatever type of collagen you want I guess that’s what you mean I’ll just keep using what I’ve got I like it it’s tasteless but it makes my coffee feel thicker seem thicker to drink I like that plus I had turmeric so it’s kind of a nice concoction to have in the morning with my decaf

#11

I use any brand that has all of the above complex, yes.

(Denise) #12

Okay well if you want to share with me what the complex has I’d appreciate it if not that’s okay too as I can do some more research online if I want to or feel like this collagen I’ve been using I’ve used two brands so far but yours sounds really good

(Pete A) #13

I take 100mg magnesium in my multi, but don’t supplement otherwise. I’ve had low sodium but that’s fine now. Don’t shy away from salt.

I believe bloodwork tells me what I need to know. My nutrients come from food best I can. Meat, dairy, coconut oil/ghee/butter, dark choc and the gym!

(Denise) #14

I agree for the most part Pete, and I definitely am not shy of my salt intake. I so get regular labs so I know part of my nutrient levels. I started the magnesium because I have so many nerve issues, and also, I get, or did have, a lot of leg-cramps, and foot. Now I am doing very well in those areas including only a little bit of what I call neuropathic from my T2, but that is way better, along with my A1c’s since keto.

(Pete A) #15

And veggies, berries, nuts.

(Denise) #16

I do low carb berries, and nuts but haven’t been eating vegies. I used to eat a lot of brocolli, spinach and brussels, but really got lazy about cooking them. I may buy some spinach for my omelette I love in the a.m.

Hi Denise, yep, I still take magnesium citrate and collagen. I started with powered Mag citrate, but have switched to pills. One in the morning and one at night.

I have developed some heart issues and magnesium is super important for that. It’s often the first line of defense if you go to the hospital in AFib. That’s good enough for me.

There are various types of collagen. Mine is a complex of type 1, 2,3,5 and X. It will say so on the bottle.

Currently using this:

Vital Vitamins Multi Collagen Complex - Type I, II, III, V, X, Grass Fed, Non-GMO, 150 Capsules

You can google this.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #19

Don’t forget that vitamins D and K are necessary to get calcium into our bones.

(Denise) #20

Yes, I forgot all about it being good for my heart too, it’s good for so many things! I really like the collagen you told me you take, I take a whole scoop now and wonder, not afraid of it. The other I had taken, I only took half the dose so who knows, but I think I am seeing some results from the new stuff. I just ordered my capsules again, same Mag citrate
