What kind of pizza sauces have you found that are keto friendly? I notice that a lot have added sugar.
Pizza sauce
Not going to be very helpful, but none unless you make you own, or reduce the portion. In your case to avoid sugar I would buy organic tomatoes and make my own.
Fortunate for me I grow my some of the my own veggies and herbs.
Good news and bad news.
Good news: Rao’s has no added sugar. 3g carbs per serving. I found it in my local supermarket. https://www.raos.com
Bad news:
$7.29 per small jar at my supermarket.
Yep, it always is.
I am trying a bottle of Rao’s by using a little (I don’t like much) and then freezing the rest in ice cube trays for future use.
Rao’s marinara and pizza sauce, 365 organic pizza sauce, Cucina Antica marinara sauce, Monte Bene marinara sauce
Use whatever herbs you fancy. There are certain classic ingredients though, like basil, bay leaves, garlic. Also onion and mushroom. I personally add rosemary and sage. I tend to cook these up from fresh in low heat with olive oil first, then add to the sauce later after, along with adding extra olive oil to the sauce. And I do use sea salt liberally.
I think I may try making my own and freezing in ice tray per PrimalBrian’s suggestion. I don’t need a lot on my fathead pizza.
I use tomato paste with a little garlic powder and Italian seasoning, and add a bit of water to thin it a little. Very simple but very tasty.
Right. It’s an easy way for portion control for me. I use it for low sugar BBQ sauce as well…
We use Trader Joe’s Bruschetta sauce sometimes for our keto pizzas. 1/2 a jar is about 18g of carbs but split between 2 people it can work. And I love it. A little goes a long way.
Right on - and something like sauce is where they try to put massive amounts of sugar, etc. at times.
I’m going to be a bit of a heathen and say the minimum you need is just a can of diced or crushed tomatoes. If it’s too chunky, simmer it until it’s smooth enough. It’s not the most flavorful but it’s quick and easy and you can add the flavor with toppings and seasoning on the pizza instead of in the sauce.
I make my own sauce and it’s a bit more complicated than that, but if I didn’t have the time or opportunity I’d just go with the crushed tomatoes instead of a store bought sauce.
I wasn’t sure what I’d find when I went looking. But I just started reading labels and eventually, found one that was very low carb and almost no sugar. I can deal with that. I’m only going to be using a few tablespoons of the stuff, not the whole jar.
If you do want to make your own, I like the idea of starting with a plain tomato paste. Takes very little work. And it’s like a blank canvas upon which you can build whatever flavors you like. Oregano is popular in pizza sauces. Basil is often a favorite. There are some others.
If you want to go with canned tomatoes, I find that starting with crushed tomatoes can give a pretty decent sauce pretty quickly. When I’m making a quick sauce, I’ll usually start with a little oil, a few cloves of garlic that get crushed, and saute those to give the oil some garlic flavor, but not allowing the garlic to burn. (It’ll get bitter if you burn it.) Then, I’ll add the crushed tomatoes right into the same pan. From there, it’s just a matter of taste. Cheese, Italian seasonings, salt, black pepper, whatever you like. I tend to keep it pretty simple, and usually some basil right at the end as cooking it too long kinda kills the flavor of it. It doesn’t take all that long and it can be pretty cheap to make a pretty decent sauce.
