On not being hungry

(Michael Arthur ) #1

Been low carb since Feb 1st. Food is starting to be blah to me. I think I have a variety of meats and veggies but when I think about eating ,it just doesn’t draw me. smells sometimes trigger hunger now, often times I will eat something low carb just so I won’t be tempted by high carb garbage especially at work where its everywhere. I guess my question is this. Is this common? Should I eat just so I won’t be tempted when the garbage is offered and smells good? I know i Could fast but I’m afraid of muscle loss and being tempted lol

I think it’s common. Part of the cool thing about this way of eating is appetite control. I have days I just don’t feel like eating much. Then I have the “eat all the things days”. I don’t find food “blah” though … just not interested in it unless I’m hungry. I don’t think I’d recommend eating if you are not hungry just to avoid something. I guess my mindset has changed some? I look at food more as fuel now than anything else so it’s easy for me to determine if my gas tank is empty LOL … hope that makes sense!

What triggers your concern of muscle loss during fasting? Do you have a low percentage of body fat?

As far as I am aware: As long as you are fat adapted burning muscle for fuel is the LAST thing your body wants to do. It’ll go to fat, and failing that autophagy (self-eating basically) of old cells (like old skin cells, old beat up connective tissue, etc).
I wouldn’t suggest eating if you’re not hungry, if you get cravings you could try a fat bomb or salt water or just plain water. Eventually you’ll be able to pass by the carbage without needing any distraction at all.

Fear not, my fellow ketopian!
The ketogenic diet is muscle sparing!

Think about you body this way, why would your body store fat as stored energy then when you need energy you muscle? This just doesn’t make any sense.

You body is very smart and when you are fat adapted you can use all that stored fat as energy all day long, what what!!!

Think about how the human body was during the hunter gatherer times. We as human we able to eat fat and proteins but we never new when that next meal would come. You body knew that I needed energy and muscle to go out and get that next meal even if you went 15-20 days without eating. You body will use the fat and not the muscle.

Give it a go! Have a listen to the Fasting Talk podcasts and read some blog posts on Fung’s site. It sounds like it might be an interesting new phase for you to explore. Listen also to the Megan Ramos podcast with the Dudes about switching it up. Why not have a go at Feast and Fast. You might like it.
