On Keto 90 days. Waiting on energy burst

(dixie) #1

I have been on keto a little over 90 days. I’m type two diabetic and my glucose readings are back down in the pre-diabetic stage. I test my key tones and every time I test I range between .5 and 1.5. I still feel tired a lot of the time and when I hear people talk about the burst of energy I get a little jealous. I have had a couple days where I have had more energy and that felt great. But it is not nearly often enough. Any advice

Well, as frequently mentioned on this site: are you getting enough sodium, potassium, and magnesium? We need about 5g of sodium a day which equates to a little over two teaspoons. Low salt can make you feel low energy.

Thanks! I think I get enough salt but may not getting enough potassium. Maybe I should look for an electrolyte supplement.

I am with Edith, triple your salt and electrolytes. Don’t skimp. Go gangbusters!

Also, do you feel fat adapted? Are you able to go for say 24hrs without food without getting ravenously hungry?
Cheers
Alec

I don’t feel hungry and am not tempted to eat carbs. I cook for a homeless shelter and have made cookies and cakes and haven’t even tasted them. 18 hours is the longest I have gone without but really wasn’t starving then, just felt I needed to eat something. I was going to hold off trying fasting until I was about 6 months in.

Dixie,
I run about the same markers as you. T2d and low pre-level readings. I never really experience a burst of energy either and like you was looking for it and jealous of others. Then the weather got nice and I started hiking and although it wasn’t a burst, every day got a little better and seemed a little easier. I then hiked into a place that I had done pre-keto and had always wore me out getting there BUT this time it seemed as I had much more energy. The more I do the more I am realizing that the endurance and strength is so much above and beyond what I was used to that even though it isn’t a “burst”, it is unbelievable and I am ecstatic with it.:joy:

Ron. Thanks for sharing!! That is encouraging to hear. I am trying to be Patient. I know it took me many years to get my body into this shape and I don’t expect it to go away after only 90 days. I’ll hang in there. Thanks for the encouragement!!

My bursts of energy have come while fasting, not just on general keto. I also think that the slow steady increase in energy on keto is more common than the burst.

KCKO!
Cheers
Alec

Thanks!! I am going to try fasting … just want to get a little more time in being Keto adapted first. I love the fact that the feel full and satisfied and that sugary carbs arent a temptation.

It’s life changing, isn’t it? I have been amazed how easily I have lost weight. CICO was an eternal struggle; keto is a gastronomic delight!!

Lose weight while eating bacon… unreal.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #11

Give it time. And it may happen gradually, rather than suddenly.

I don’t feel super-energetic either, but what I notice is that I have a fair supply of steady energy and my stamina is a lot greater than it used to be. I have some kind of unknown fatigue syndrome, the result of a bad viral infection in 2006, and before I went keto, it was difficult most days to find the strength to do more than go to work and come home to collapse. These days, I find I can exert myself without having to spend the next day or two recuperating. It’s not flashy, but boy, will I take it!

I’ve been on a ketogenic diet for 45 days and I’m still waiting for that same burst of energy that last all day. I work rotating shifts so that may have something to do with it.

The energy “burst” is a side-effect of fat adaptation, but it doesn’t happen in exactly the same way–if at all–for everyone. Play it safe and don’t go so solidly by other people’s experiences. Judge for yourself. What other benefits have you experienced? Going from T2 to pre-D and putting years back on your life and keeping toes on your feet sounds like a pretty awesome side-effect to me, with or without energy burst…

(dixie) #14

Thanks Don! Good to keep things in perspective. Reversing T2D was my motivation and I having some real victory there!!

Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks so much for sharing the tip about checking electrolytes. I upped my salt and it really helped. Does anyone gave ideas/recommendations on electrolytes supplements?

Great info! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Dixie: I don’t feel extra energy on the Keto diet either, in fact…I feel down. However, I do notice more energy when I fast…especially when day 1 is complete.

Can’t weigh in either way. It’s in the 90’s here in So Cal! I tend to hibernate until December.
