Not losing weight/gaining weight, what am I doing wrong?

(Daryle Watkins) #1

So I’ve been doing Keto for 2 weeks so far and the first week I lost 6 pounds. This week I decided to properly track my macros and here’s what I’ve been eating every day:

Breakfast: 3 oz scrambled eggs, 1 tb of butter, 4 pieces of bacon/sausage, 0.2 shredded cup of cheese.

Dinner: 2 tbsp of Caesar salad dressing, 2 cups of romaine lettuce, 0.2 shredded cheese, 1 beef patty, 1 tbsp of butter.

I’m college student without a kitchen so my only access to food is the dining hall, but I know that I’m definitely been staying within my macros. It’s 1278 cal, 108g of fat, 57g of protein, and of course under 20g of carbs. In addition, I do cardio at the gym everyday for 30 mins.

I was frustrated by my lack of progress yesterday and I saw that I may be not getting enough fl oz of water. I drank about 100 oz, did not go to the gym, but still burned 2000 cal by the end of the day. Today, I woke up and saw that I gained a pound. I can’t help but feel completely dismayed and confused.

Hi Daryle.

It takes time to undo the damage that eating poorly for decades has done to our hormones. Those hormones need time to sort themselves out before they are willing to let go of our body fat. So try to focus on the positives you have found since eating keto, be patient and try not to obsess with the scale. It takes some people a week to start losing, it takes others a month or longer. It all depends on how much healing our bodies require.

Also, those macros sound just fine as long as they don’t leave you hungry or stuffed, after eating. And fluctuations in body weight of 1-3 pounds are completely normal. It’s likely just water.

what you are seeing is normal

first you lose water and then stall until you become fat adopted.

being able to burn fat instead of glucose will take longer than two weeks in most people.

so there is nothing to worry about just reduce your carb intake as much as you can and wait.

You are not throwing a switch, you are retaining cells to get energy from a different source. After about a week I felt better but it took three months to get my running energy from fat. If I wasn’t running I would have no idea that my body was still changing. This is why I get saddened by people that post “I tried keto for a week and it didn’t work”.It take some time and effort but it is well worth it.

Keto is this easy (Keto for beloved noobs)

This is for Phase One - the starter phase. It’s still not complicated later, but this is the really easy to explain version which will help you no end.

  • Eat under 20g of carbs a day

  • Don’t worry about the scale

  • Eat plenty of good food - fat and protein - while adhering to 20g/carbs/day. Don’t worry too much about macros and calories EXCEPT carbs. Keep them below 20g/day. (Prioritize the protein - always start with protein in every meal, but don’t panic about it.) Your job is to get fat-adapted, so give your body the fuel you want it to use. Also, your appetite will vary - it’ll disappear, then it’ll come roaring back. Happens to most people, don’t sweat it.

  • ELECTROLYTES/SALT - KEEP THEM UP

  • Buy the meat you can afford - don’t stress about grass-fed, organic (con), etc… The worst meat is better than the best bread.

  • Fasting is a tool. Nothing more, nothing less. Works for lots, not for others. Don’t let tools tell you to use it before you’re fat-adapted and it makes sense.

  • This site has a search function (magnifying glass at the top of the page) and a newbies section - use them both, you’ll get a better variety of answers to your questions far more quickly that way. SERIOUSLY, THIS IS VERY USEFUL.[1]

That’s as difficult as it needs to be for a couple of months.

My good friend Terence (being friends with a Kiwi feels kinda dirty, but there you have it, keto makes for strange bedfellows) tells me this thing I have described above is called “dirty keto.” So yeah, do dirty keto, kids!

1278 cal for a college aged male is way too low.
How could you be eating fat to satiety if you are measuring tablespoons of it?
It seems your mind is still in a “diet” mindset looking for immediate fat loss by restricting calories (just with keto macros).
That will slow your metabolism just like any other calorie restricting diet.

Keto is about investing in creating a change in hormones (for 6 weeks or more) to allow your body to burn fat.
Then use that to burn off the belly.

Skip the short game and invest!
