I seem to have absolutely no appetite! In the past when this happened I would force myself to eat, because that’s what the people on the old Atkins message board told me to do. I always ended up sick.
I’m thinking this time doing Keto I should listen to my body and only eat when actually hungry? What about just drinking a Keto shake or eating a fat mob? Or should I just fast on water and/or black coffee? I need some experienced forum members to help me out please???
No hunger need advice
You don’t have to eat if you don’t have an appetite. It would be wise to stay hydrated and get enough sodium. It’s a natural fast. Generally a fast is followed by a feast and your body should ask to be fed when it’s ready.
When you do eat, whole food is best (vs a keto shake), but everyone does keto their own way so whatever works for you.
If you’re not hungry, don’t eat. Especially if you’re trying to lose weight. You want the body to be using it’s stored fat, instead of eating fat to some guesstimate macro. Just be sure to prioritize proteins, to make sure you get enough. Better too many than too few.
My primary keto mantra:
“Minimal carbs. Adequate proteins. Fats as needed (for satiety).”
I know to eat real, whole food, but what I meant was should I drink a Keto shake or eat a fat bomb if I’m not hungry but have a lot of physical activity to do? Like if I’m cleaning houses all day or working double shifts at the nursing home, cutting grass all day, etc.
No your body fat is your energy. Just eat when hungry, don’t when your not. It’s that simple.
I have learned just to Fast when my body does that… and then I end up prolonging the fast into a time I try to aim for, then eat. I have also noticed that the meal you have then; at that point, is super sonic delicious!
Ok, thanks everyone Wow I will probably (hopefully) end up saving money on grocery shopping!!
This is a great question. On that same note though, what if you aren’t hungry but you haven’t even come close to 1,000 calories for the day? I’ve been in that situation several times in the past two weeks.
Isn’t that why some people say to make yourself eat even if you’re not hungry? So your body doesn’t go into starvation mode?
As long as your not under eating everyday you are fine. Some days I eat 800 some days I eat 1800. Just eat til your full your body with adjust to it.
If your body is legitimately not hungry, then it’s burning your own body fat for needs and you don’t need to eat. It’s when you ignore your body’s signals that the issues come in. Trust me, your body will let you know when it needs to feast, which is a natural follow-up to fasting. Me, my body likes to feast first, then fast, then feast again. It works for me
Your enzymes are adjusting - give yourself 3-4 days to let that happen, and if you still are feeling stagnant, consider the benefits of addressing your enzyme situation. If you have a medication or antibiotic history that has thrown your GI tract out of whack, you can help your enzyme restoration process by taking pro-enzymes like Ginger with every meal (two capsules of dry Gingers, or a bit of sliced fresh Ginger). Some people use papaya or papain isolated enzymes, but they are expensive and can create gut dependencies.
I think that discerning the difference between satiety and stagnation is important - as ideally you want to be consuming a well-formulated LCHF/keto menu until you are solidly 100% fat-adapted (which takes anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months or more), making sure you take in enough protein & fat to help fuel your BRAIN. Of course, if you start doing 24 hour fasting, the fasting will also help restore your enzyme production - just without the benefits of the fueling that is critically needed during the fat adaptation process.
For more on this, see the classic LCHF/keto books Protein Power by the Drs. Eades, and The Art & Science of Low Carbohydrate Living by Dr. Phinney & Jeff Volek PhD. Phinney & Volek, along with Dr. Westman, also recently published The New Atkins For A New You.
We have saved a ton of money on grocery shopping - and not eating out. We buy all of our meat and veggies now from BJ’s (like Sam’s). Went to the grocery store today because I had to get cash. That was all I left with. Hadn’t been in there for food in about three weeks - I used to go like every other day and get whatever junk I was craving. We’d go out to eat at least once a week. With cocktails and tip, it would be like $60, and that was burgers and wings, not steak or anything fancy.
So I’m just following everyone’s advice and only eating when I’m hungry, even if I’m working all day. It’s working!!! I still have lots of energy and do not feel tired. I’m going to keep calm and Keto on!!
Apparently something happened to my username??? I don’t know why all these numbers are coming up instead of BostonterrierLvr. Can anyone help me figure this out?
If you bring it to the attention of one of our awesome admins like this hopefully one of them will look into it for you:
