Newbish Macro Question

(Dan) #1

Hi all, love this forum and the Keto WOE. I started Keto on March 19. As of June 21 I am down 43 lbs. My starting weight was 259.9. I am 37 years old, 5’10" male. My question is, I am only tracking carbs per day. Keeping it less than 20g. Eating till full. Lately this means TMAD. But I just listen to my body. Can someone explain when the need to start watching macros comes into play? If I am consistently losing weight is the 20g carb good enough?

Thanks

Sounds like everything is going great! Usually people start looking at it more closely if it’s not working well for them. I would just keep going as you are! Great work!

Hi Dan,

Yeah, keep doing what’s working until it doesn’t. Then it’s time to experiment a bit with macros and/or other plateau breaking methods

Keep doing exactly that. The key to losing weight in a healthy manner is making the appropriate response to hunger. And what you are doing is working.

If you hit a stall, you can reevalute how much fat you are eating since it’s likely that you are fully fat adapated. This means you don’t have to make fat a part of every bite of food. For me it meant cutting down on dairy and nuts… less cheese, less butter, sour cream etc. As long as doing this does not increase your hunger, you can be assured that your body is supplementing your energy needs with body fat. But for now, I wouldn’t change a thing. Enjoy the ride.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #5

Just keep eating minimal carbohydrate and eating protein and fat to satiety. You’ll be fine.

Personally, I don’t believe in counting macros. Low-carb and eating to satiety should do the trick. It worked for me, in any case. :bacon:

Phenomenal loss, almost too good. One fifth of your body weight in a month? That’s like over 10 lbs per week, are you actually eating? Those losses are more than most people get while fasting!

Sorry, don’t pay attention to me. I read March as May for some reason, I think I am hungry.

If you stop getting results then worry about it, but if you carry on doing as well as you are, no need.

You are doing a great job @DoubleDown.

If keeping to less than 20g carbs is working for you why mess with it?

I didn’t start actually tracking macros until everything stopped working, I plateau’d indefinitely gym progress went to crap, even gained a little. Started doing more fasting which worked at first (should have been my clue) but ultimately made it even worse. That plateau broke the 6mo mark and I’d had enough. Got my metabolism tested and it slowed way down. to a little under 1800 rmr, That’s somebody in their 30’s, physical job, lifting weights 4x/week, cardio 2x week that can’t even eat the “normal” amount of calories without gaining. Even when trying to loose weight I’d never bring them down that low, for a long time my body was satisfied with a lot less than it needed (because it was slowly loosing speed). Took calorie counting to get the weight loss back on track which sure enough right around that number at a slight deficit I started loosing again. Now I’m in the long process of adding cals back in to get my metabolism rebuilt. As long as you’re getting the results you want I wouldn’t worry about it, but if they stop and it seems nothings working again, don’t do what I did and tell yourself that calorie counting is pointless and not do it for months on end while your results stall.

I ACTUALLY NEED TO TRACK. Unbeknownst to me, my protein intake is entirely too high and has caused my blood sugar to rise to dangerous levels. I’m going to calculate everything from now on. I feel like I’ve wasted time, money and energy the last 3 months.

:unamused:

(Allie) #11

Nothing is wasted, it’s all part of the journey and you’ve learnt from it.

I’ll do the total opposite if I don’t track and way under do it. Although my protein intake isn’t actually high, it would be considered high by many. (175-200).

Had an interesting conversation with my vegan cousins. They said you needed some sugar in order to feed your brain. I told them that your brain actually needs fat. You should have seen their reaction!!!’:dizzy_face::dizzy_face::dizzy_face::dizzy_face::dizzy_face::dizzy_face:

(Susan) #14

Wow…that is crazy…I didn’t think people actually believed that. I know a lot are shocked about us needing fats… but them thinking we NEED sugar, wow!

(traci simpson) #15

Yup. I just changed the subject because they were getting a bit testy’ oh, and check this out! This vegan is a smoker!!! Didn’t know cigarettes were vegan !

(Susan) #16

I know a lovely girl that is a fairly strict vegan, and very fit and works out, etc. but she is very health oriented on all levels; and certainly does NOT smoke, barely drinks, etc.

I had a vegetarian tell me the same thing once, I asked how humans survived before we found sources of sugar and then figured out a way to process it. I’ll bet the idiotic look I got was the same one you did.
