Newbie to bone broth

(LJ) #1

Made my first bone broth. Was disappointed in the flavor. Thought it would have a rich beef flavor. But it tasted very watered-down. I cooked 3 1/2 pounds of beef bones with vegetables and spices in 6 cups of water. Cooked in a pressure cooker for two hours. I’ve seen other posts that say bones Fell apart and were crumbly. Is that what is suppose to happen? Am I suppose to skim off fat? Do I drink it was a meal replacement? Do you drink it when your IF? A little confused in how this plays a part in the Keto diet. Been on Keto since feb. down 17 lbs. I have a lot to learn.

I get the best flavor by cooking the bones at 375 for 30 minutes before putting them in a slow cooker.

I make mine in a crock pot for at least 48 hours. Bones crumble when I try to remove them.

like @MountainGirl, I roast those bones before simmering. I also like throwing in some short ribs with meat on the bone. Also, after roasting, just enough water to cover plus 1/4 cup of ACV will help leach all the minerals out of the bones and then they really do fall apart. I make more than would fit in a crock pot, so it simmers on my stove (creating a delicious aroma) for 48 hours. I throw in a few whole carrots, a sweet onion and some spices. Strain after cooking. I throw out anything still solid. (my dogs do not get cooked bones)

Then yes, after it’s cooked, let it cool in the frig. The fat will form on the top and you can spoon that off and use it in cooking or seasoning. My dogs get that fat a spoonful at a time on their kibble as a special treat.
