Newbie Question :)

I’m a newbie to the forum.

I’m done keto previously a few years ago and was able to lose 60lbs in 2 months + never felt better. Over the years thought carbs crept back and now I’m heavier than I’ve ever been… plus post baby.

I’m 28 years old, 170lbs, 5’1".
I’m eating about 60% fat, 30% protein and 10% carbs.

Is this about right?

I only ask because the last time eating keto, I had dropped almost 5lbs the 1st few day and 10lbs the 1st week… but this time I’m on day 3 and have gained 2lbs.

Any guidance at all is appreciated

Sounds good. Wait it out. My wife didn’t lose for 3 months. She’s down 25 lbs now

(Tisha Jolene Eby) #3

Thank you for the reply!

How long did it take for the weight to start coming off for your wife?

(Ethan) #4

3 months… but she did have inches lost prior

Wait. You lost 60 lbs in 2 months?? Wow! I thought I was doing good…

(Tisha Jolene Eby) #6

A few years ago… when I had a 22 year old metabolism and hadn’t been wrecked by pregnancy yet :joy:

And I wasn’t even counting calories or carbs or fats then. Basically I was eating sausage, eggs, bacon and cheese for breakfast. Broth and salad for lunch. Chicken, salad and some other veggie for dinner. I walked like 2 miles a day. Did the elliptical for an hour a day. Drank green tea like crazy and the weight just fell off fast.

Under 20g carbs is what I’ve read.

(Tisha Jolene Eby) #9

That’s about what I’m at. 17g today, but 36 yesterday :frowning:

I have a question. I’m a newbie to keto as well. I’ve been doing it for just about a week. When can you start working out ? Do you suggest aerobic or anerobic exercise for someone losing weight?

(Ethan) #11

You can always work out. Do both. You may find that you have less stamina—especially for anaerobic—initially. That stamina will come back plus extra when you are fat adapted

(Ellie) #12

Try to keep to under 20g, ignore %s for carbs.
Then moderate protein and mostly eat fat.

Try to avoid snacking. Eat enough at each meal until you are full and then don’t eat again until your next meal.
Good luck - if is often harder and slower a few years on. I had the same thing. 10 years ago I lost about 50lbs on Atkins - mostly induction. I went back to normal eating (bad Ellie!) and lo and behold the weight went back on. This time is more of a fight, but it makes me more determined to make this the last time I have to try to drop weight in any significant amount.

6lbs down overnight. Goodbye water weight  and still feeling great… no keto flu yet. Hoping to avoid it this time around.

I see so many different people experiencing different things, I don’t know what I am doing wrong I guess. I am on Keto for 5 wks and only lost the initial 10 lbs in the first week. I really lost my appetite, which I thought was good, now thinking maybe I am “under eating” although everyone says to eat when your hungry. I only do Keto foods, 20 or under Carbs 50-80 Protein a day and 1,200 calories as I want to lose weight and work a desk job. I am 5’8" and 197lbs, a month with no loss, I do walk 1- 2 miles a day and swim, adding a workout too. Any extra advise to get things moving along. Otherwise feeling great, no stomach problems, bloat/gas or other problems I had before.

(Tisha Jolene Eby) #15

I’m pretty new so I can’t help much… but I see a lot of people recommending on other posts about under eating and adjusting your intake of fat and protein. Maybe up the fat and reduce the protein and eat more?

I over ate last night and dropped the 6lbs I’m just a few hours. But I know weight fluctuates so Idk and it’s obviously water not fat.

(Linda Carpentier) #16

Wow, 6lbs, water or not I’d take it

So seperate question for advice…

I’m pretty sure I’m expecting keto flu + an actual cold. I feel beyond terrible.

Any recommendations?

One of the biggest misconceptions out there is we need the eat less to lose weight. This is wrong. Ok, well, not completely wrong. Eating nothing at all is eating less. But that’s getting into a fasted state. That’s not just eating less.

A calorie restricted diet does not help you lose weight. Case in point… me… a year ago… 245 pounds pre keto. I changed my diet, was eating suggested foods that the ADA and the VA suggested. It was low calorie, I was hungry, I wasn’t losing weight. I actually gained some weight, about 5 pounds. I was hungry all the time. I felt like I was starving.

So I went keto. More than just keto. Zero carb keto. I went all in. I was eating twice the calories as before. I lost 40 pounds in two weeks eating about 3,000 calories a day.

So it’s not the calories them selves. It’s what kind, and how often. I went from the suggested 5 meals a day to two meals and eventually down to one meal a day.

Once I learned the dirty little secret about insulin, so many things began to make sense.

When you eat carbs, your insulin goes up. When your insulin goes up you can’t burn fat. It takes a while for insulin to come back down to normal levels. If you. A re eating 5 meals a day (I’m counting snacks as well) then your insulin is just high all the time. It doesn’t go down for very long.

Then there is BMR. Your metabolism. If you eat less, or lower your energy input, your body will adjust its metabolic rate to save energy for the things it needs. You can actually gain weight by eating less. Counterintuitive I know. But by keeping your caloric intake high enough, your body can take care of its needs, and increase its metabolism as to just burn off the excess it doesn’t need.

The human body is an impressive machine.

Take vitamin supplements, especiallly D3. At least 5,000 IU a day. And salt, at least twice as much as you would normally. I’m taking 3 times as much as normal, and am just now on the edge of not getting night cramps. I still need one more tsp of salt at bedtime to stem off muscle cramps. So I’m working on it by having water bottles of salt water throughout the day, spaced apart by several hours each to keep my electrolyte balance as balanced as possible. So far it’s worked well. At worst, if I don’t manage to get the extra salt in a day, I get muscle cramps. But usually remember to take a tsp of salt at bedtime. That always works. But I’m hoping to define the amount I need in every bit of water I drink to keep balance.

40lbs in 2 weeks?!

What were you eating?!
