Newbie Question :)

Bacon, eggs, steak, bullet proof coffee, pecans, avocado, chicken thighs, not any veggies at all. I’ve recently brought leafy greens back into my diet. I gained 10 pounds in a week. So I’ve dialed way back on those and might have a salad once a week with a nice steak, and make it an event of sorts. I do like food. A little too much. But eating no carb allows me to eat until I’ve had my fill, and not gain weight. I can also eat just once a day, and it feels absolutely normal. I don’t feel like I’m starving myself at all. It actually feels good.

Now it’s been over a year since I was diagnosed with T2DM. And almost 11 months keto. My HBa1c went from 11.8% (that’s really bad) to 5.7% (that’s about the bottom of the scale for Pre-diabetes. 0.2% away from being considered non-diabetic. Also approximately 60 pounds lighter than I was a year ago. The health benefits from this way of eating stems from keeping insulin low as possible as long as possible. That’s only possible with ketogenesis. Or with fasting. But being a sugar burner and trying to fast is like torture. Now, I can fast anytime I want. I get double takes from the schedulers at the hospital. They look for a morning appointment because I need to fast before the appointment, and sleeping through the fast makes it easier. When I tell them a late afternoon appointment is fine they remind me about not eating 12 hours prior. And I smile and say, “actually the fast might be more like 72 hours. Will that skew the test?” And they just look at me. “How can you just do that”. I tell them it’s easy once you learn the secret. It can go really well from there or they can just think I’m a nut job and give me the line, “I’m glad it works for you”

I think some people take the “eat when you’re hungry” meme a little too strict and make it “only eat when you’re hungry”. I think it should be said, “always eat when you’re hungry”. When you go Keto, your hormones are able to balance out (barring any additional issues). And the hormone that makes you feel hungry just doesn’t rise to the occasion so often. I have gone on three day fasts and not been hungry at all. I just ate because I thought I should. I wasn’t fasting intentionally, I was just busy. [now that’s a keto super power!]

If you’re also working out I’d leave that exactly where it is. If not you may want to consider moving 10% of that protein over to your fat if your results continue on a path you don’t like.
