Newbie just checking in! 😁

Hi, I’m a 55 year old man who just started 5 days ago. I weighed 267 when I started and I’m 5’10" tall. I’ve dieted before and lost 20 to 30 pounds doing Sugar Buster’s diet at least a decade ago. A friend told me he was doing this so I researched it and decided to try it. Haven’t gotten much support from wife (nurse) and her friends, telling me it’s unhealthy and unsustainable. I know that’s incorrect from what I’ve seen and read though. I’m starting by just cutting carbs and sugar. Not counting calories for awhile. Lost ten pounds already but I know that’s only water weight. Haven’t felt too bad but have been paying attention to hydration and electrolytes. Anyway, it was nice to find this site and I’m sure I will be using it more in the future. Thanks for any encouragement in advance. :grinning: John

My mother’s a nurse and wasn’t thrilled when I told her I switched to Keto, even tho she was the one who told me to cut carbs in the first place. At best she was lukewarm in support of it. However, almost a year later, she’s pretty fine with it now, since she’s seen the results on me.

Keep it going.
Prove them wrong.

John I’ve been doing keto for over two years now. It’s been one of the easiest things, I’ve ever done, and take it from me I can be pretty lazy.

But maybe I don’t know what unsustainable means.

I’ve been at this 3 months, down 35lbs, no longer anemic, hypertensive, prediabetic, and I just had my cholestrol checked and a full panel and all my numbers are great. People on keto have very different results, so keep that in mind. People who don’t know anything about keto and aren’t willing to pay attention to the research are the ones who are happy with being complacent because it’s their comfort zone and don’t want anyone to upset their world balance. Its those folks who you have to be patient with and hope they will come around in time. Once your wife sees the proof in the pudding, maybe she’ll come around. My husband has been completely supportive of me because I have some medical background and he trusts my ability to research and make the right choice for me.

As far as being unsustainable… There is nothing unsustainable about keto as long as you like the foods you eat and can live without the junk you can’t.

I’m new to Keto as well (five weeks) although I have known about it for more than 5 years. Here is what I tell people when they try to tell me it is dangerous: This is the way the French eat and have eaten for hundreds of years. And they are healthy, I know, I live there

Welcome John! Great place to be. Hang in there. Your results will speak for themselves! You can find all kinds of info here when you start evolving or needing to tweak something. And a pathway to so many valuable people in this community that are just unbelievable…in a great way!

Hey, John. Welcome to a great lifestyle! The best action you can take for yourself is to read, listen, and learn. It’s not to defend yourself against those who choose to question your choices, rather it’s to help you understand for yourself. May I recommend a few resources? Diet Doctor is an excellent site with boundless resources on all topics (right now, Low Carb Denver’s entire conference from earlier this week is there, and you can watch it with a free trial membership). I also recommend of course the 2 Keto Dudes podcast, and The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living by Drs Phinney and Volek. I could go on, but if you dig into those a bit, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy.

Welcome and congratulations for the success you’ve had so far. What’s unsustainable is eating a high carb diet (even if you’re calorie restricting) and expecting health or long term weight loss. I think it’s fair to say that what’s been happening isn’t working so why not try something new? Hopefully she will see the proof in your appearance, health and how you’re feeling day to day.

Congratulations on creating your healthy future!!

I’ve been watching keto connect on YouTube and Dr. Boz and a couple others. Really like the honesty of the Keto Connect couple.

There’s an incredible amount of information on the web that says it is healthy and is sustainable. I would challenge them to do some research of their own and stop listening to archaic advice that is biased and dangerous. We’ve been told for almost the last 50 years to eat low fat, include lots of vegetable oils and to eat high carb, move more eat less, avoid salt… yet obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome in general, are epidemic. If everyone is listening to this advice and we still have a serious problem with world health, then something is wrong with the advice.

Tell them to snap out of it and make their own informed opinion. What is going on now is clearly not working.

Did that. I was a debate geek in high school so research is my middle name! Funny though, just got it again from a guy at work. The anti fat thing is so ingrained in this generation it’s hard to break. Another reason I didn’t put in my intro about why I’m doing this is Alzheimer’s runs rampant in my family and I’m hoping the brain cleaning up theory about keto is right …

Good morning all, today is my first day on the forum. I have been on Keto for 41 days now. I hit my 20 lbs this morning. Since day one I incorporated working out with my lifestyle change so I know I’ve gained some muscle weight. I have had high blood pressure for years now, as well as constant migraines. Since starting Keto, BP is under control, I’ve only had one headache and I feel amazing.

Welcome @John_Cory_Andrew I find most people say Oh you cant sustain that or I could never not eat carbs! I think secretly they want to join the keto way of life but are scared. I know I have lost 20 pounds in 3 months and it feels amazing and has been the easiest thing I have ever done! Prove them wrong and when in doubt eat bacon! :bacon::bacon::bacon:
