Hi everyone. I’ve done Keto before and lost 20 lbs over a four month period. I never really paid attention to strictly under 50 carbs per day. This time around, I’m around 20 carbs per day and I have the keto flu. It is awful. I’ve been out of it mentally, sluggish, and nauseous. These symptoms are awful.
New to this
Hi, you sound like you need to up your electrolytes, particularly sodium. When I was feeling nauseous in the early stages of going keto I found that eating extra salt (2 teaspoons instead of 1) did the trick for me. Use the search button for the excellent ketoaid recipe. Good luck, and know that you will come through it
Keep up with the electrolytes- there’s a recipe on here for ketoaide to help- or take potassium & magnesium supplements, & lots of salt on everything. You might not have experienced keto flu last time if your carbs were too high to get into ketosis?
It will pass soon, quicker if you get the electrolytes right. Stick with it, it’s worth it, I feel lots better than I did on a high carb diet!!
Ketoade or broth will do the trick. Bone broth is tasty and easy to make; I put the chicken carcase or hambone or whatever in a crock pot, cover with water, and 24 hours later—broth! But if you don’t feel like making your own, a bouillon cube will work just as well. But check the ingredients for unwanted items and don’t get the low-salt kind, lol!
- When does the diarrhea stop?
It’s been three days. - What exactly causes the diarrhea?
- Is the diarrhea from all of the glycogen that has been stored ? Is it all of the fat being expelled from my body?
The lethargy is subsidIng. I believe I was dehydrated.
My appetite is not big at all. I push food away.

Soon.

Excess water from your system, combined with a bit of a reset of your gut flora.

That’s part of it, yeah. Fat is not “expelled” from the body. Fat cells become large and distended when full of glycogen. When you lose weight, that glycogen exits the cell, and shrinks to it’s smallest state. Each cell only “gets burned” (terrible, confusing term, but…) -via- a process called “autophagy”.
Get some electrolytes into your system, and you’ll feel better soon…
