I’m guessing your family is northern Italian? I’m sure that tastes good but for Southern Italians that’s a salad not pizza!
New to Keto -- cheating meal
UODATE: Thanks to ALL of you who commented on this. Really appreciate it.
So not sure after 1 night if I’m still in ketosis but I can say I didn’t feel well this morning! After only 5 days on keto, and clear weight loss even without stepping on a scale, it definitely did a number on me.
Next week, I’ll make the fathead pizza. Used to make it all the time but wife and kids got sick of it. But I’ll keep making them the same pizza and I’ll make my own dough.
I know there will be cheat days for me. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and a few other holidays. Those traditions are more important to me than weight lose or feeling bad for a day after. And with a family of seven, soon to be eight, expecting my wife or me to fix specialty plates for us an other family coming over isn’t worth it and a bit extreme. But a weekly cheat day I now see isn’t in the cards.
Thanks again!
Hi Chris,
Nope, Both from Palermo in Sicily. Real Sicilian food is actually pretty diversified due to so many invasions…ie not all about red sauce and spaghetti. btw my mom used to make a salad with it and parsley , olive oil, lemon. I like to experiment with keto substitutions. That seems to be what I need to do if I want to be healthy. Good luck on your journey.
I think everyone has to come to that realization themselves.
After 7 months I have noticed some things, most carby foods do not taste as good as I remember. I had one hersey kiss yesterday and it really was not great. Although I had berries this morning and they were really good (I do have a some berries usually the lower sugar ones a number of times a week and consider it part of my carb allowance). When I did eat carbs (on a recommendation as a way to stimulate weight loss after 5 months on keto), I felt like I was hungover for 2 days even though I had not had any alcohol. As an aside it did not work and I was so sick I was no longer tempted to repeat it. Interestingly, I am no longer tempted to binge on carbs. Even when I have been at a party and had a bite of cake, I am able to stop
I make the fathead crusts ahead of time and freeze them. Then when it’s pizza night it is an “easy” meal!! (just make sure you have the toppings on hand)
Yep, did that with some roasted baby potatoes. Didn’t do a thing for me.
Look, in 1 week and you already want to cheat. Einstein said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”. You have to change. I have a daughter and a wife who are not over weight and who are not KETO, they eat many thing I don’t. Now I have just ate the toppings off a pizza
Dude go away you’re the type of person that drives everyone away from anything good.
Hope this helps
In the month of November i had two high carb - High calorie meals:
First, Meal was a pound of battered deep fried onion rings with a one pound teriyaki steak sandwich on a huge roll. The second, was thanksgiving and i had four helpings each of mashed potatoes and stuffing and all the other good stuff. I guess about 300g of carbs and 3000 calories each meal.
I stayed in Ketosis and lost 19 pounds in November.
What I have learned going Keto and Intermittent fasting is what my body can tolerate. If you don’t experiment you’ll never know.
Good luck - God bless
I don’ try to eat low carb at all. I try to eat NO CARB ever. (but to be honest, I know i get a few here and there, and I avoid any that I can avoid).
Article after article, book after book, study after study, and finally more and more doctors coming out and saying… Carbohydrates create the problem with all of the problems we have blamed on fat. If there were no carbs eaten with that fat, then there would be no insulin spike to try to use that glucose as energy. Carbs being so energy dense, cant get used, so it gets stored. That gets in the way of losing weight. You can not burn fat because of insulin. That’s an overly simplistic explanation, but pretty much sums it up.
Plenty of non meat fat available for Friday too. Avocado, coconut oil, ghee or butter, or just fasting and burning your own fat for the day. There are also Keto friendly alternatives for pizza. It sounds like you were halfway to it with the cheese crust. I haven’t tried any, as I’m nowhere ready to try to cook like that. I failed to make a meatloaf into a meat loaf, and made soup instead. But it was delicious.
Hey Chris,
If you’re still reading…
I just saw this one today:
Looks like a pretty decent pizza crust, keto, and he also mentions being able to put these in the freezer, which to me, means you could make a number of them ahead of time.
I haven’t tried them yet but they really do look to be pretty simple to make, and with stuff I already have on hand. They take a while to bake which is why I was thinking maybe making several at a time and freezing would be more practical.
No biggie if it’s a no-go. But was thinking of you.
Have a good day!
“One strategy that no one seemed to mention was after eating the high carb meal, if you do an equal amount of physical activity, there’s a strong possibility that you will burn all of those carbs as fuel and put yourself right back into ketosis by expending all of the carbs that you just ate.”
That’s a fantastic plan, but have you considered how much exercise it would take to burn off a pizza?
The main reason the whole “exercise more” approach doesn’t really work is that it’s effortless to pop a bagel or doughnut in your mouth, but that can mean an hour or more of steady exercise on the treadmill or whatever. 2 doughnuts? 2 hours. A pizza? See you tomorrow morning…
Great points Alan. That exertion and time should be strongly considered. If someone isn’t willing and able to make it happen through sweat and time, it won’t work.
Jesse
Awesome, carb-free sauce!
My own update on such things - I mentioned how after my indulgence it took ages to get back on track? Well I did get back in the groove and lost another 1 kg (1 kg is 2.2 lbs - bearing in mind my goal was 77 kg and I’m now below 78 kg, that’s significant)
Now that I’m within a hair of my goal weight I’ve set myself a new goal - to develop a 6 pack in 6 months, ie by my 52nd birthday in June!
That means bulking up a bit on muscle, so yesterday I didn’t go out of my way to eat carbs but I didn’t hold back, eating plenty of vegetables, some beans and a sweet potato over the course of the day, along with normal milk in my coffees (I get through about 4 cups a day). That absolutely would mean being out of keto, and my breath thingy confirmed 0.00. The good news is the very next morning it showed some ketones, low but already there.
Even better my weight didn’t go up as much, only about 1.3 lb or so. The secret there was I was LOW FAT that day, as I knew any fat I ate would be stored. That was just yesterday; today my ketones are still lower than normal but deffo in keto and able to work hard, concentrate and avoid snacking, so expecting good things at tomorrow morning’s weight in
Low story short, the more keto adapted you are the more you can slip a bit and get away with it - but that’s something to look forward to about 3 or 4 months into it.
Good luck!
Wow…bold statement that it’s not for anybody. Some of us do this because it’s the only way we can have a long life. We do it to live and not degenerate into a diabetic downturn that causes us to take medications, have candida infections, neuropathies, etc. It’s definitely for us! Maybe it isn’t for you.
LCHF 8 months and I try not to have a weekly cheat bite let alone meal! I think the time factor may be ok for some people but for the longer term insulin resistant, I think you have to stay honest or you slip
