New to Keto and need some guidance

(Ernesto Llorente) #1

Hello All! I am looking for some guidance and perhaps some answers and maybe you can direct me. I started Keto three months ago, T2D with SLE. Since on Keto, I no longer take a myriad of medications. The only one I take is for the SLE. However, now I notice that I am constantly waking up with Hypos and I get Hypos during the day. So it forces me to eat carbs, more than the 20 grams of carbs per day. I am very active…I lift and do cardio. For example last night I ate two slices of pizza cheese and pepperoni and woke up with BG at 70. I don’t want to eat carbs, but these low’s are making me eat them. I carry on my glucose tabs to pick my BG up when I’m low. Any guidance?

I can’t speak to your whole question but something that stuck out to me is that I understood the recommendations to be avoiding heavy exercising when you’re adapting as your body will be busy converting to a new fuel source… Might want to look that up more though

Thanks Lindsay! I will look into it.

Listen to http://2ketodudes.com podcast. They are both diabetic and have been on keto since 2016. They are very informative and may have some ideas for you…

I am no expert but are these hypo’s by the numbers (BG=70) or did you feel bad/light headed? I only ask because I didn’t think 70 was too low (but it does sound low for T2). It will take more of a T2 expert to chime in further… or someone who knows about the interaction with Lupus.

Also, are you doing 20 net or 20 gross carbs. It can be a somewhat significant difference though unlikely enough to give you hypos.

It isn’t a problem per se to eat more carbs than 20g if that’s what your body needs or wants. If this turns out to be the case, experiment but I would focus on better carbs rather than the most empty sugar/simple starches (and dodge high fructose stuff).

I never thought about gross or net carbs…since Im so active, I am always in deficit in carbs, so I may have to track how many calories I am burning and how much more carbs I can eat to stay in the 20 gram net carbs. Thanks I’ll look into that.

Thanks will do.
