Alrighty, I’m a whole 3 weeks in, and I’m struggling with getting enough fat. I’m eating a ton of cheese, cooking everything in butter or olive oil, avocados are my dear friends, and mayo goes on just about everything.
So, short of drinking olive oil, I’m at a loss for how to get those last 30g of fat.
I’ve made chocolate fat bombs, cream cheese/bacon fat bombs, and I’m looking into a really delicious sounding coconut cheesecake thing, but even when I eat 2 of those throughout the day plus my regular fats, I’m still too low. And after two portions of all that, I feel sick, so it isn’t sustainable.
I’d like to know what you all do to get enough fat without feeling like you just ate a stick of butter. (Or going super over protein… I did that the other day, on accident, and my tummy was NOT happy with me).
Need More Fat!
When I started Keto, I always started my day with a bulletproof coffee - the one I make has 38g of fat.
Here’s my calculations:
Bulletproof Coffee:
1 tbsp cocoa - 12 cal, 1g fat, 2g carb, 1 g protein, 0 Sodium, 82mg Potassium
1 tbsp MCT (or coconut) oil 130 cal, 14g fat, 0 carb, 0 protein
3 tbsp 35% whipping cream *get Lactancia 0 carb - per tbsp - 50 cal, 5g fat, 0 carb, 0.3 protein, so 3tbsp = 150 cal, 15 g fat, 1g protein, 15mg Sodium
2 tsp butter (melted) 67 calories, 8g fat, 54.7mg Sodium, 2mg Potassium
1 tsp vanilla extract (optional) = 12 cal, 0 fat, 0.5g carb, 0 protein, 6mg Potassium
2 cups coffee - 4 calories, 0 fat, 0 carbs, 0.5g protein, 10mg Sodium, 222mg Potassium
Total - 375 calories, 38g Fat, 2.5g Carbs, 2.5g Protein, 79.7mg Sodium, 312mg Potassium
Actually…it probably has 42g of fat…I normally just put a tablespoon of butter in rather than measuring two teaspoons.
And there were days where I had two of these.
If you’re only 3 weeks in, maybe your body needs time to adjust.
I know I’m certainly struggling with that!
I dare say that over time, getting enough fat will start to be easier.
I wouldn’t be too strict and try to push tooooo hard to meet my “fat goal” for the day during the first few weeks.
As long as you are getting “enough” fat to be feeling okay (not feeling cold, not feeling hungry) then I would say that AT FIRST, this is FINE.
Over time, you’d be wanting to start aiming more for an “ideal” level of fat intake (i.e. your fat macro).
But from reading the forum, it seems some people never quite make their fat macro long-term and are still doing okay.
During this first, challenging transition phase, just do it “as good as you can”.
As long as you’re not getting negative effects (like hunger, sugar-cravings, feeling cold etc) then you’re doing fine.
Don’t force feed yourself too much! You don’t want to make yourself dislike keto.
Post how much fat you’re getting at the moment, daily.
If people can suggest some gentle ways of increasing your fat intake that your stomach is okay with - then great.
If for now, you’re consuming the fat you feel able to and are doing “okay” with that - just stick with that for now
You’re going through a huge change. Be kind to your body and don’t demand too much from it all at once!
You could also post your stats (height, weight, body fat, etc) and people could help you calculate your macros. Maybe you accidentally calculated a too high amount and are pushing yourself too hard because of that…??
Probably true. I’m 25, currently 198lb , 5’5". I’ve seen that I shouldn’t even think about weight loss until I get into the swing of things, so I’m trying for maintenance. My calculations say 25 carbs (but I rarely go above 15), 154 fat, 124 protein. (But I feel better on days where protein is closer to 100). Regardless, the highest I’ve ever gotten my fat is 102, and I felt super nauseous.
Started keto because my doc said something about insulin resistance, and my dad has T2D, so there’s no way in hell I was gonna get to that point.
Okay, so when you are currently eating:
Carbs 15, Protein 100, and Fat 90
How do you feel?
Are you doing okay?
If so, go with this for now, give yourself time to adapt to the changes.
Also, by giving yourself more time, you will find ways of eating fat that feel better to you. It takes time to find these things out!
Have you had “Keto flu” or did you find the first 2 weeks difficult?
Tell us more about how you are feeling with Keto… (appart from feeling nauseous when trying to meet fat targets )
I really feel fine. My eyes are weird and dry, but that’s the only current irritating thing. (And the lack of fat.)
Keto flu wasn’t fun, but bone broth is freaking amazing. The hubby was SO happy when my mood swings leveled out.
I was cold for the first little bit, but not anymore.
I’m actually surprised at how good I feel.
Well then you’re doing great!
Leave it that way for now. Start feeling comfortable with it. Start trusting your body in keto.
Use the time to research Keto recipes. Try out which fatty meals work for you and which don’t.
But stop putting yourself under pressure.
I’m sure a lot of fatty meals that seem “eww” right now will be fine in 6 months time.
Think of your fat macro as a long-term goal.
BUT keep it at the back of your mind.
SO that if you start feeling not-fine at any point, then you know it’s time to talk to people here about your fat macro and whether that might be contributing to your feeling not-fine.
The macro numbers are a guideline.
Sure - somethings just can’t work. If you’re eating 20 C 20 F and 20 P per day, that maths just doesn’t add up. Similarly, if you’re eating 100 C 20 F and 20 P, people here are gonna say “that’s not Keto”. If you’re eating 8000 calories per day, ppl are probably gonna ask “Girl, what’s going on?” So the numbers can be a useful guide.
But the POINT is to eat enough fat for you to feel GOOD. Not to eat the numbers of fat your macros says until you
Be kind to yourself - it sounds like you are doing great.
Have relaxed conversations with people here every now and then about your macros to see if you need to tweak your intakes at all…
Maybe use the forum’s search function re dry eyes or start a thread about it.
It could just be one of those “body still adjusting to totally new situation” things, but maybe it’s also a “thing” that people here know how to deal with.
How much water/ liquids are you drinking per day?
People here keep telling me Keto is a diuretic thing and that water and salt intake is important.
Roast a clove of garlic covered in olive oil. Then when it’s mushy/browned blend it with some butter. I dip my homemade jerky in a ton of it.
Delicious and fatty as hell.
If you’re not hungry, you probably don’t need more fat. It’s primarily the new fuel for the body if carbs are being curtailed.
This
Why get that feeling when you can live the experience?
…I put it to action!
I will eat that 1/2 stick of butter or more
Just my 2 cents
Works for me
I am using heavy whipping cream mixed up with a low carb chic powder and whipped to a pudding like consistency (tonight I’ll be adding berries instead of that), and just eating a large spoonful of coconut oil once or twice a day to help.
I am getting sick of bacon
I love eating a spoonful of coconut oil myself. Not being a coffee drinker I have started my day with a spoon or two of it. But the weather is warming here (Did I say that? ) and it has liquified. It still tastes great but I miss that texture. I’ve tried refrigerating it before, but it gets too hard. Maybe I’ll see if it will be cool enough in the basement.
Thank you all so much for the support and input. Today, for the first time, my fat was greater than my protein. Woohoo!!! Turns out pork sausage (sugar free, of course) is delicious and fatty and amazing. And I feel great!
