I was listening to one of Dr. Berry’s live Sunday night sessions last night. And something struck me. Towards the end, he was talking about trying to get away from using plastic, especially for things that get heated. I’ve heard him say that a few times before but it just never clicked. Sure, we have some bottled water, especially for when we’re traveling, but that’s always kept cold.
And then I had my DUH!! moment. Our go-to for our morning pot of coffee is a Mr. Coffee drip coffeemaker. It has a glass pot. BUT… the light bulb finally went on. That thing is primarily PLASTIC!! Even the lid of the glass pot is plastic. And it’s all HOT! That’s the point, HOT coffee. YIKES!!!
And so I got to thinking about what I could do instead. We really like our coffee. I probably make 8 to 9 cups of it for us to divide between the two of us in the mornings. That’s our normal amount. Makes me wonder how much plastic exposure I’ve been giving us without even realizing.
I’ve been looking at percolators online. They’re not all that expensive, maybe a little more than the Mr. Coffee (saw one of those on sale a few days ago for $13) but not nearly as expensive as the Keurig which I think was closer to $100. (Honestly, I have no idea what’s inside of a Keurig that would get heated. I feel pretty confident, there is plenty of plastic involved.)
With a group this size, I suspect a few of you have been around this block before. Have you found a percolator that you really like? One that you would suggest I avoid? Did you go electric? Or stovetop? If stovetop, does your work with an induction burner?
I know, lots of questions. But I’d rather ask people I trust (you) about it than rely solely on Amazon reviews, especially knowing you might have been in my exact shoes sometimes in the recent past.
Thanks very much!!
P.S. It’s been a while since I posted. My wife and I are into keto for just over 2 years now and we’re doing well! I’ve lost somewhere around 80 pounds now, not sure about my wife but she’s lost a lot. I haven’t seen “onederland” yet but was within 2 pounds one day last week. It really does fluctuate quite a bit for me. My goal was somewhere around 195 or so when I started but figured I might adjust a little when I got there and decide if that’s where I wanted to be. Still don’t quite know yet but I’m getting close. It’s almost “maintenance” at this point with the occasional day or two of fasting to try to bump things a tad lower. I think overall, we’ve maintained keto and probably lessened our plant contributions somewhat. We’ve not done full-on carnivore but occasionally have a carnivore day, mostly because that’s what we want to eat. Usually, there is a low-carb veg somewhere, even if it’s more of a “condiment”. Anyway, figured I’d share. And thanks for any suggestions on the percolator if you have any!
