My first junk food keto meal

#1

I have been SUCH a good girl, and I have been eating real food, where possible organic, grass fed, etc…you name it. Pretty…darn…clean :star_struck:

Horribly busy day at work (whcih meant I had fasted for 24 hours), and the kids are sick and they were craving McDonald’s (they’re teenagers- don’t judge me!). It’s cold and it’s raining and my husband is out to dinner, and I thought, ok, how can I do this? I couldn’t bear the thought of coming home and cooking today.

So I did it. I went junk keto.
Angus burger- two patties, two slices of cheese, tomato, pickle and onion, mayo + mustard, lettuce instead of bun.
Came home, ate it and then felt terrible guilt. So I put my hands over my eyes and typed it faithfully into MFP.

Not too bad! 11g carbs, 58g fat and 62g protein. So I had some HWC to drink, will eat some more fat later. I should, in retrospect have had only one beef patty, and this would have made things more balanced.

But I learned some things…

  1. You can stick to keto and eat junk occasonally, you just have to do your homework, and not be stupid.
  2. Junk food is awful, so really only for emergencies- I prefer my free range pork chops thanks!

I’d be keen to hear what other people do when there is only junk food (or when they just can’t be bothered).

About once a month I get a Bacon King from BK. 2 Whopper patties, cheese and bacon on top. I order it without catsup and mayo (soybean oil yuck), and remove the bun.

Why? Because I like it.

If I don’t see anything keto friendly, I just skip the meal
Keto has given ME the power to eat or not eat at anytime!

Now, if I am at the end of an EF, and have been thinking of my planned first meal - I gotta eat. Yeah it’s mental. But those breakfasts are planned and always at a known locale - mostly home!

DARN @KHAN ! I forgot the mayo would be made with some kind of seed oil!! Nice catch. You can tell I’m new at this!
As soon as I got home I thought, why didn’t I just make eggs? Doh!

I would say at least 80% of my food is “junk keto.” I work and live on my semi truck and don’t cook on it. So, it’s whatever I can grab when I’m stopped. That tends to be McDonald’s, Wendy’s, occasionally Denny’s. Sometimes it’s an ordered pizza with all the crust removed after it’s delivered.

Really? That’s amazing! I suppose once you are in a groove you would know what is in what like the back of your hand. How often do you eat @J_A-M ?

(Jay AM) #7

I have picked foods I like and used menu building on the websites of the individual restaurants I go to to make my list of things to order. That information is entered in Cronometer. I no longer track intakes currently. I eat the same things from each restaurant for the most part. I have about 3 things I can order from each place. If a place is new to my menu, Chipotle for example, I just go for the lowest carb options and don’t stress about it.

I can see the logic in that. That certainty means you must stay on track.

I am still trying to track my days as I have a tendency to straaaaaayyyy from my plan. Which is why I now need to lose over 20kgs  . But hey, I am on my way. Very happy this week.

Once you know what to eat where, it’s hard to be surprised. For example, next time you go to McDonald’s, you already have what you’ll order from there. So, you get used to “if I go here, I eat this.” The ddecision is already made. It doesn’t matter what new thing is on display, you already have your order ready. The same goes for grocery shopping and everything else.

I just discovered the other day (not sure why I never knew) that Quiznos makes all their sandwiches in salad form. So when hubby and I were out and he wanted to stop there to eat, I was able to have my Italian Sub, that I love so much, in salad form. Was so happy about that. Otherwise I was just gonna take the meat and cheese off the roll and just eat that. But instead I had the meat and cheese on a bed of greens with a little tomato, little red onion, banana peppers and pickles. No dressing. It was my first time since starting Keto 6 weeks ago that I ate out anywhere other than home and it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. LOL

Same here! I’ve been a little controlling about it actually. And tonight I just thought- I got this. Still felt kind of nervous about how it would look in the tracker, but turned out ok.
As @J_A-M says, now I know, and if I’m ever in a situation where I can’t make my own food, there is an option already sorted. Not my ideal choice, but a keto friendly choice.

It’s funny because I was in a great deli earlier at lunch (my 24hr fast was unplanned) and I couldn’t choose food- there was triple cream cheese and roasted porchetta with a good layer of fat…but the thought of working it out overwhelmed me. So just didn’t eat.

Keto would not be sustainable for me if I counted and worried over every piece of food. I’ve been there before when I had an eating disorder. Food shouldn’t cause panic.

Making your own healthy mayo is super easy using an immersion blender, and much cheaper than buying avocado mayo at the store. I make mine with:

  • 1 cup (or a bit more) LIGHT olive oil (EVO tastes very strong for mayo)

  • 1 room temperature egg

  • 2 tsp lemon juice (fresh is great, I use bottled)

  • 1 TBS mustard ( I use spicy brown. Use what you like)

  • Salt and pepper to taste (I go pretty heavy)

  • OPTIONAL A pinch of stevia. (There’s probably a reason they put a bit of sugar in mayo.)

Yes! I’ve been making my own mayo since I started, to avoid the seed oils in bought mayo. I too use the mild olive oil- the EVOO tastes kind of bitter. I use half plain white vinegar, half lemon juice. Dijon mustard. I make about 500ml a week and it’s all gone by the end. Yum.

I used to be a chef, so the cooking part of keto is easy for me. I also like cooking with lots of olive oil, butter and salt- bonus!

But still working on the macro part. I think I’m getting the hang of it, but it’s easy to eat too much protein for me.

(Randy) #15

Sounds like I’m preaching to the choir then!

I love my home made mayo!!!

(Diane) #16

I would say, once a chef, always a chef! I love to cook and would love to have some formal training in techniques as I try to re-train myself to cook with Keto friendly ingredients (specifically, baking).

(Karl) #17

Right on. I load up on Aldi’s junk. If the macros work, it’s Keto friendly. I see so much food-fear in these forums lately - c’mon people, stop restricting yourselves! If the macros fit, EAT IT.

Seriously, why pass up that baconator at Wendy’s when all you have to do is ditch the bun?

(Jeanne Wagner) #18

Good save! Luckily I have simply been able to skip a meal again if needed. I just grab a bullet proof coffee or have HWC if it’s too late for coffee. My stress hasn’t stopped me, yet.

(Dom DePlume) #19

I’ve made my own mayo religiously for years, but honestly, once you’ve made mayonnaise with bacon fat, oil-based really loses its lustre.

@HereWeGoAgain Thanks for that! I’ve been getting ready (mentally) for a trip to the midwest in June, and have been trying to source/suss out keto-friendly road food options. That one’s handy…

Crazy!
I just now again saw the tv ad for that beast …yummy
Watch out in-n-out, hitting Wendy’s instead .lol

I agree, gonna get it tomorrow, I mean today
Going KETO SHopping anyways

Maybe I will post a pic
