My first junk food keto meal

(John) #21

I’d say I do junk food quite a bit. I eat at Wendy’s more than half the week (I go with my co-workers). I’ll have to keep the baconator in mind (I’d remove the mayo and ketchup), but my “normal” is a triple, plain, no bun, at bacon/mustard/pickle. Side salad with dressing and no croutons instead of fries, and large brewed unsweetened iced tea. Chipotle salad bowl has been great there. Most sub places make subs either in lettuce wraps or as a salad. I’ve even done McDonald’s a time or two with the sausage mcmufin with egg (minus muffin) – put two together and use the sausage as a “bun”.

I’m still trying to figure this whole Keto thing out, and I know I am still eating too much protein (need to figure out an easy and tasty way to get more fat in daily), but so far, so very good – even with all the fast food hacks.

Subway will also make any sub into a salad. I get half spinach, half shredded lettuce… shredded cheese… 2 scoops of tuna salad … salt/pepper and oil and vinegar (if I forget my homemade vinaigrette made with MCT oil)

Yum.

I’m a recovering junk food addict, so I don’t go near any fast food outlets. I’ve done several weight loss programs and junk food has always been my downfall. I used to make excuses like, I’ll just eat one burger instead of two, not order fries to go and skip the coke. But eventually you start making up reasons why its ok to have another extra piece of chicken or worse still you buy too much and it will be thrown out otherwise…lol.

Best thing for me is to not start at all, no matter how much those TV ads are calling for you to fall off the wagon!

I think I’m with you you @tdean
I felt lousy after. I think clean keto is the way for me.
But I can see times where I’m going to be out and about, and there may not be an option, and like @J_A-M says, now I know what I can eat, and stick to my plan.

Perfectly reasonable position but I think the great thing about this thread is that it proves that you can walk in the door of the arches or the king etc. and get out with your health.
If you can’t pass up the fries and shake, then definitely stay away, otherwise, we can have at it and scratch that itch :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(Terence Dean) #27

Absolutely Rob, I’m not saying that others shouldn’t hit the carbs now and again depends on your goals, I’m here to lose weight so for me its geared around that, I know from experience how easy it is to break a diet and especially once you reach your goal where you think alright I’ve done it, and I’ve gone straight back to the old habits that put the weight back on again. The main thing is to not get down on yourselves if you do fall off the wagon, its not the end of the world, there’s always tomorrow and you can start again. Great reading all the different views on this forum.

(Rob) #28

Isn’t this thread about going junky and NOT hitting the carbs?

The OP had a nice big meal at McD’s and still only had 11 carbs. Keep off the buns, fries and shakes :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

(Terence Dean) #29

Agreed but I cannot see how anyone could pay a visit to KFC, order 5 pieces of chicken, fries, and gravy and not be tempted to eat the whole lot. What we need to remove the skin, ditch the fries and filter the gravy? Better not to go there at all…whats the point of torturing yourself? :stuck_out_tongue:

KFC Original isn’t as bad on carbs as you would think - a breast (with skin) is 7 net carbs by official stats. I was surprised too. Breast/thigh/drum 3-piece is 19 carbs (apparently) - a lot for 20g keto but manageable if you plan for it a little. Obviously, you don’t order the fries and gravy (not required), skip the biscuit.

You are painting an addicts POV that says they have no control when they get in there which some certainly don’t. Clearly from this thread though, lots of people do have the self control.

I was a binging junk addict myself - Double-Double, fries, shake, (Diet) coke  at In’N’Out, then across the car park for a dozen Krispy Kreme (scarf at least 6 of them down there, the rest later/tomorrow). That was one meal (usually 3MAD + snacks on a bad (SAD) day):

  1. over 3100kcal
  2. 501g carbs (490g net - where is that fiber donut?)
  3. 242g of Fat

and I LOVED IT! :flushed::dizzy_face:

I can now go (rarely bother, just if friends are going) and just get a D-D protein style (lettuce wrapped, no bun) and not order the rest and feel happy for the burger, not sad for missing the rest. I know it will kill me, and it’s allure is gone.

Torturing myself by not ordering the junk is like saying I have to eternally struggle with keto. I think for a heavy majority of us, walking into a fast food place and being attracted by the chocolate shake is about as likely as walking into a grocery store and being attracted by the cake. But, we don’t buy the cake or the shake and may not even be interested. Carbage temptation is everywhere and that’s our lot in keto life to not partake. Many of us don’t find it a struggle after a while. For those that can’t walk into a fast food place and not order carbage, I agree they should stay away.

My sister has been trying keto for a couple months now but one of her common themes is getting Wendy’s and “I had to get the fries, I couldn’t stop myself.” I told her that she has to make a choice, either eat the junk and move on or be dedicated.

I’m lucky because we have a restaurant nearby that’s open 24hours, so I can always get a juicy steak and salad at any time of the day or night. Just keep driving past Maccas, Red Rooster, Hungry Jacks, KFC. Haha we should start a reformed junk food addiction club! Hi I’m Terry, I’m a junk food addict and I’ve been clean for five weeks…lol. Just added this line to my profile. :stuck_out_tongue:

(Terence Dean) #33

This is exactly what I mean…lol. You may need to go to Wendy’s with her next time and demonstrate how its done. I can empathize with your sister, its not easy for some of us.

(Jay AM) #34

I’m not located near her but, she has the tools. Like those in this forum, we can only give so much advice.

#35

Your sister really just needs to succeed one time, and then she’ll realise that actually it’s completely satisfying to not have the fries!

Just one small change at a time for some people.

(Jay AM) #36

I think it’s because she’s young and still thinks she’s invincible. But, she’s taken up keto baking lately so, that’s probably better than fries. She’ll get there.

I thankfully have lost most urges for junk. I don’t even think about snacks. I actually get excited over different cheeses I have in my fridge lol. Thankfully I was never a big sweet person, we would go into the store as kids and I would walk out of the store with cheese rather than candy. My poison was bread, copious amounts of bread.
