Much Better After Quitting Keto

I got the flu and my asthma flared. I am now on my second round of prednisone, and it’s making me sooo hungry. I know I’ve been eating too much and hope to get back on track soon.

Prednisone will also raise glucose levels and lower ketones. At least, that is what it did for me.

Oh swell. I really don’t need that, but I appreciate the information. I didn’t know that.

I have this same problem. Trying to figure out how to have lower blood sugar and I guess higher ketones without burning out my adrenal glands. The only answer I’m getting is eat more carbs. I guess of the lowest glycemic index possible

If a person was not as worried about a fatty liver I wonder if you ate fruit as the carbs maybe it would impact BG less since fructose is processed in the liver?

Stress hormones are typically only elevated for the first week or two on a keto diet - presumably in an attempt to maintain homeostasis with regard to blood sugar levels (ie to elevate blood sugar levels back to where they previously were) Unlikely to “burn out” your adrenal glands. But if you are worried about it try coming down more slowly in carbs. I would go up to 100 gm of carbs for a week or so and then down to 50 and then down to 20.

@Weeverrm Have you started keto yet? Is the possibility of having some sort of negative reaction preventing you? Here’s my experience for what it’s worth, which may be nothing.

I started keto with a 4-day water fast the first week of January, 2017. I was 71 years old. The second day of the fast I was intensely hungry, something I describe as ‘carb hunger’. By morning of day 3, the carb hunger subsided into something I call ‘keto hunger’, which is a very different kind of thing. More a gentle/subtle reminder that you haven’t eaten for a while and it might be a good idea to do so. I broke the fast a couple hours short of 96 on Friday of that week with a cup of coffee with about a tablespoonful of coconut oil floating on the surface. Fortunately, I eventually learned how better to do this!

The first major thing I noticed was that within two weeks the bloat and flatulence of a lifetime went away, never to return! If nothing better had ever happened because of keto, I would still do it just for that. But, a lot of good stuff has happened and I’m a happy and healthy camper at the age of 74, soon to be 75. Keto was the best thing I ever did for myself.

Almost a year into Keto / IF ,40-50 pounds down and fixed all my issues except BP, I noticed it was elevated especially during 48 hour fasts and have been trying different things.
I think it is my adrenals, it is registering as stress on my watch. Figured out now for sure it is related to carbs, and it seem eating some at night avoids the problem. I just have to figure out how many. It doesn’t seem to take much . A few blueberrys before bed may be enough seems like fruit may be better because a lower insulin response.
I tried to just keep going but my resting heart rate after 4 days gets into the maybe I should stop playing around range
Thanks

Cutting to the chase, most of the symptoms that the internet community attributes to adrenal fatigue and inadequate dietary carbs can be cured by a modest daily supplement of one essential nutrient – sodium (aka salt).

Not specifically keto, but suggestions what to eat and not to eat:
