I’ve been keto for about 4 weeks now (and was previously low carb), and only had very mild keto flu (mainly just some trouble sleeping, cause I felt pretty wired)… presumably because I was already pretty low carb.
Anyway, things have been going pretty well, lost some weight, feel great, tested with keto sticks and tested very positive, however, part of the reason for me to try keto was to see if it helped my migraines. But I think it has made them worse! For the last week or so I have been taking magnesium and calcium supplements, and also drinking a bunch of water with good quality salt, but it really hasn’t made any difference. I have been drinking 2-3 glasses of water a day containing a teaspoon of salt (as well as a bunch more water without).
I am drinking heaps of water, and hopefully have a decent coverage on electrolyte supplements (I’ll probably track down some potassium as well), but none of this has helped yet.
For some about me type stuff: I’m 42, not particularly overweight (around 22% body fat). I have been aiming for roughly 20g net carbs, and on the days I have tracked it, tend to be lower than that (15g usually), although I am a little protein heavy. Lots of leafy greens (more than ever before), and no alcohol (which sucks, and wont last, but one thing at a time!).
I do not know what my triggers are, I have never been able to figure it out, and I am currently taking Amitriptyline daily as a migraine prevention. This worked great at the start, but I have had to bump the dosage to maintain its effectiveness. At this point I am trying to decide if I bump it again, or start weening myself off of it, because it doesn’t seem to be working well any more.
So, does anyone here have any suggestions?
