Metabolism during fasting (n=1 experiment)

fasting

I work at a recreation centre in Western Australia where the gym staff go insane when you mention the F word… so on day 4 of my fast, I went to a local clinic where they used an ECAL device to measure my metabolism.

After almost 4 days of fasting (with 1 x coffee with a bit of cream each day and a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter a couple of times when I got really hungry), my results were:

Resting Metabolism 1654 kcal (normal range for my height/weight is 1570-1918), so perfectly normal.

Fuels being utilised: Fat 76.1%, Glucose 23.9%

Looking forward to the next time they try to tell me that fasting will destroy my metabolism :joy:

interesting.

The F word.
Exactly.
In 2017, it is more acceptable to drop an F bomb than to say the word Fasting. :+1:

Glucose Metabolism Homeostasis: Glucose Burn Rate & Cycling Determinants

“… The major determinant of how quickly glucose appears in the circulation during the fed state is the rate of gastric emptying. …”

“… The intricacies of glucose homeostasis become clearer when considering the role of gut peptides. …”

“… Thus, excessive entry of glucose into the peripheral circulation in insulin-deficient diabetic patients after ingestion of a mixed meal resulted from a lack of appropriate suppression of endogenous glucose production rather than impairment of initial splanchnic glucose uptake. Intensive insulin therapy restored postprandial suppression of endogenous glucose production to rates observed in nondiabetic subjects. …”

Do you have a picture of their Results ? White out your name and personal details and post it. I’d be curious to see what the printout looks like.

Hope this works…
Didn’t bother removing my name - have only attached the page referring to metabolism but also received others which show changes in body composition

Amazing. Thanks !
How much does it cost to get this test done ?

(Melanie Armistead) #7

I’m actually not sure!

I had a series of 3 visits under a chronic condition care plan as Kirsty who runs the clinic is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist. I paid about $100 in out of pocket expenses all up for the 3 visits, but that included body composition analysis, goal setting, recipes etc.

A few months ago I organised a screening of The Magic Pill and got her to do a Q&A with the audience (as she’d presented at Low Carb Down Under) and she offered me a complimentary follow up visit, so I used it to test fasting metabolism.

These are the clinic details - when it was a stand-alone clinic, there were different packages and prices on their website but I haven’t seen them on the new company website.

Have not seen the ecal device before now, interesting. It looks like it’s taking readings from the breath? Is this similar to the tests used for VOC Max?

(Melanie Armistead) #9

I haven’t done the VOC max test but I think it may be. You lay down and have a clamp to keep your nose blocked while you breathe into a mouthpiece for a few minutes.

VO2 max.

It’s pretty much the RMR part that’s shown at the very beginning but without the full face mask - and you lie down rather than sitting
