May 2018 IF/EF chat - all welcome

Most of the elimination diets I’ve looked into eliminate the common allergens:

Grains
legumes (incl peanuts and peas)
Nuts
Eggs
fruit
Dairy
Nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, white potatoes, tobacco)

You can still eat meat, fats, and leafy greens. I’m going from memory here, but I usually try to stick with the elimination diet for a month and then try ONE probable offender. I think the recommendation is to go six months, but I just can’t be THAT strict that long. But my suspect food was dairy and I was right - I can’t have it. The protein in dairy gives me chest pain and palpitations. :frowning: I am pretty sure that I do NOT have an egg issue, so there is some consolation in that!

It is amazing how much of this is mental. I WAS feeling physically ill a while ago and was pretty sure I’d be breaking my fast tonight when I get home (I don’t bring food other than broth with me to work on fasting days). I had that broth and now I feel better. But I’ve been looking forward to my “breakfast” for two days and it’ll be a mental battle as to whether or not it’s time. I guess it will come down to how I feel later.

(Trish) #243

Gotcha. But are they really considered actual food? ?? LOL
Also, people come in and buy the plain for their dogs. Is it weird that I feel worse for the poor dog than I do for the humans?
And on the topic of dogs, how is your pup doing, Candy? Recouping nicely I hope?

(Candy Lind) #244

Doing really well. Hates the e-collar, but who wouldn’t? LOL! I’m keeping a daily photo journal. She’ll have less swelling and more hair on the “permanent wink” side, but she’s improved a lot since Tuesday. I’m blurring this in case anyone might be squeamish, but she’s really looking pretty good.

So I made it to 48 hours fasting, a couple of coffees with cream to keep me going, mainly water or black coffee, very pleased, 2 x 48 hrs in the week! But within 30 mins of eating I had the runs! (luckily only the once!) I’ve searched the forum about this, but all I can find is that it seems to be quite common, but no real answers other then electrolytes? I’d not overdone those, if anything probably less than I should have as I’ve had leg cramps the last couple of days. Just surprised as it wasn’t an extended fast, maybe because I’d done the 2 in a row with only one meal between them? Anyway, 1lb was lost up to yesterday morning, but my waist has definitely gone in more… why can’t it go off my thighs!!
Grumble over, hope everyone else is doing well. Not fasting again until Monday now. :grinning:

(Trish) #246

Glad she’s doing well. It’s worse when our fur babies are sick then when we ourselves are sick I think.
My Havanese had had a mast cell tumor on his leg last year. Was all wrapped around the triceps and path showed it was the worse form of that cancer but the vet got it all and a year later he still has no sign of recurrence. He’s 13. Dogs are pretty resilient. I’m sure your pup will adjust nicely once she sorts out her new spatial perception stuff.

Well all, I made it through the night shift at the headlight factory still fasted! I am currently in hour 108 which marks my longest fast to date! 161.6 on the scale. I decided to take a nap and break the fast after that. Yay me!

#248

Okay, thanks so much for your help with that!
The only things I will really have to eliminate are almonds and the dairy, as I don’t eat many of the other things… How long should I try no eggs? I was hoping not to have to go without eggs for as long as possible! Do chia seeds fall under nuts and legumes?

(Allie) #249

Chia seeds are seeds.

#250

Thanks… so are seeds okay on an elimination diet, or they commonly foods that people are intolerant of?

(Candy Lind) #251

It’s another “n=1” thing. What did you eat after? Was it just a small amount? You might need less, or a different, food choice to end a fast. Once you find something that works, stick with it. Give your body the time it needs to reactivate. Before a full-on meal, give it at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour, after your “breakfast.” And if you had the cramp situation, couple your breakfast with an extra ration of salt & water.

I wish I were losing off my arse, but I’m not going to complain when the dangerous stuff (the belly fat!) continues to be the main area that’s changing. KCKO. :innocent:

Absolutely, YAY YOU! I’ve only made 3 days so far.

Be sure after that long fast that you start slow with the eating. Check around to see what small meals work for other people. Give it some time to “settle in” before feasting.

After listening to the Audible version of Dr. Fung’s new Diabetes Code, last week I did 3-36 hour fasts. Scale has not budged since December but this week I lost 5 pounds! So from now on, Monday, Wednesday and Friday are fast days for me. Also made some cold brew organic green tea for fasting. I love it!

(Allie) #254

You know I’ve been feeling off this last few days… broke my fast yesterday after just 38 hours which really isn’t long for me, but I felt awful so it was a good call. I don’t count calories or anything else these days but ate plenty after breaking my fast and had my last meal at 7pm. I’m never hungry first thing, normally just have a fatty coffee or two until at least late morning. This morning though, I was ravenous which just doesn’t happen so made myself a massive breakfast and haven’t had anything else since, won’t now either as it’s almost 8pm here and I won’t eat after 7pm regardless.

Stress does crazy things and I think that’s what it is. Either that or something unknown is messing with my resting heart rate and my appetite.

#255

Broke my fast in the evening, so had an evening meal- could’ve just been too much I guess, but as it was only a 48 hour fast I didn’t think it would matter too much. Live & learn!

(Steve) #256

I think every EF is different as our bodies are changing. The 4-day I did previously wasn’t that bad. This time, day 3 and 4 were pretty damn hard (two days of headache - yay!!!) - but I’m a stubborn bugger, so I’ll push through.

Hopefully your next one is a breeze!!!

(Allie) #257

Thank you
I’m tempted to wait until the weather here has really warmed up before trying another EF as the main problem I have that puts me off, is feeling cold. I can’t function in cold. If I’m at home it’s easy as I can keep moving and keep warm, but as I’m an office drone Monday to Friday…

I started again last night. 14 hours down and headed to 72.

(back and doublin' down) #259

Good luck, Rusty ~ you’ve got this.

Listened to a podcast by Jimmy Moore where he said if there’s BPC, it’s not really fasting. So I’m not going to say I’m fasting this week, I’m just skipping meals and calorie restricting. Thinking of a 5 day fast that includes the Memorial Weekend as I plan to be home and working on some house projects. Might just have to try a water fast and see how the difference feels.

(Doug) #260

Ahoy me old friend, in with you I am. Couldn’t decide what to eat today, so I said, Well **** it, I ain’t eatin’ nuttin’…
