Math them divided carb counts

(Kerin ) #1

Today I have a thus far carb count of 4.5g…And 0.5 fiber… And 0.5 sugar.

Intake is chicken, canned dice tomatoes (na sugar), cheese, pepperoni, coffee and heavy cream. 380 calories.

So, how many carbs have I consumed?
5.5
5.0 or 4.0?

This is on my mind something terrible!

Depends where you are and how the food is labelled there, but it’s really not worth stressing about a difference of 1g.

#3

You’ve consumed 5 and a half. Lol. You can weigh things less than a gram. I just keep my decimals I don’t round. If you eat another thing with 1.5 you’ll be at 7.

I like math.

In America, 4 net carbs.

I’m not sure I get it… 4.5g carbs, +.5g fiber, +.5g sugar? Why is the sugar not included in the carb count? I understand why the fiber was added separate, but not the sugar. By my calculation, you’re at 4.5g carbs (4.5 -.5 +.5 = 4.5)

What am I missing?

#6

Wait, now I’m confused too lol. I assumed the 4.5 included the sugar but no. So 4.5 total(?) plus .5 carb fiber, which we don’t count so your still at 4.5 plus .5 sugar(?) would be 5 net.

An odd way of going about it. Sugar and fiber should all be included in total carbs then subtract fiber for your net carbs.

My head hurts lol

#7

Are you sure the sugar and fiber were not just a breakdown of what was in your total 4.5 carbs? Then you would be at 4.
Total - fiber.
I agree don’t worry about such small amounts either way, but it’s good to have a basic understanding of how to track total vs net carbs.

Thank you all for trying! Yes it is a breakdown of carb, sugar, fiber.
And I’m totally tired of this month!
IDK either how to calculate the carbs with the breakdown of the labels like that.
And if a carb is not fiber or sugar what next on the breakdown?!!!
Se la vis.

(Mike W.) #10

Sugar is a carb and included in the carb count.

#11

Don’t be discouraged. Why don’t you post a pic of the nutritional label you are trying to figure out and we will walk you through it.

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #12

@Deary75 This is the best idea, especially since we’re all getting confused, lol! In addition to providing the label, please mention where you bought the item. The labeling laws are different between North America and the rest of the world.

This is not the same, but a prime example of what I’m typing about.
Total carb:4
D. Fiber:1
Sugar : 2
So… How many carbs are consumed?
7, 3, or 6?

(Ron) #14

3
Total carbs (4) already include the 2 sugar and fiber isn’t metabolized so you subtract the fiber from the total. Hope that helps.

Ron is right. In the US, is lists total carbs then the breakdown of what that is. In this example, it is 1g fiber + 2g sugar + 1g mystery carb = 4g total.
